Interesting strategy (1 Viewer)

I'm in a 12 team PPR league. 1QB-1RB-2WR-1Flex-1TE-1PK-1Def We have one team that made a couple of trades. One was to drop from bottom of 1 to top of 2, and jumped up a bit in the middle rounds. We are now in the fourth round. He is about to make his fifth pick. These are his first four picks:

Holt 2. 02

Fitzgerald 2.04

Ward 3.11

Santana Moss 4.04

Is there some strategy here that I am missing? Or is this a little goofy?

We had our draft on Friday night, and considering the RB talent that was available late, this seems perfectly reasonable. Fred Taylor, Ahman Green, Deuce McAllister all went later than the 5th.

On the face of it it seems a little goofy, because he still has a rb and a te to pick, and he's already got a reserve wr. But if if the players he's targeting are way down on his list, he may figure he can wait another round or two.

You may be right. I would rather risk late picks on upside wideouts than hope that Green or McAllister can be my #1 runner. That is me. There are a lot of ways to go at this. Probably the thing that stopped making sense to me is when he took the fourth WR. You can start three wides. The fourth when Jamal Lewis was on the board, and Frank Gore, and Rueben Droughns. But you are right there is a lot of talent available late at RB. It is a matter of picking the right guys.

with one RB it's not terrible, but I hate the 4th WRs in there.
I'm worried about Ward's injury and the Washington offense looks just this side of putrid. Oddly enough I got Smith at 2.07 in this draft. I didn't imagine he'd fall that far. I like Smith better than either of his top 2.

I went WR pretty hard after getting Edge but I tried to trade down to open with 4-5 WR but got no takers.Bri - Brian Moore Player YTD Pts Bye Drafted Culpepper, Daunte MIA QB - 8 8.11 Warner, Kurt ARI QB - 9 9.02 Anderson, Mike BAL RB - 7 12.08 Betts, Ladell WAS RB - 8 8.08 Davenport, Najeh GBP RB - 6 9.05 Davis, Stephen FA RB - - 16.08 Harrison, Jerome CLE RB - 6 17.05 James, Edgerrin ARI RB - 9 1.05 Martin, Curtis NYJ RB - 9 10.08 Moore, Mewelde MIN RB - 6 14.08 Booker, Marty MIA WR - 8 15.05 Johnson, Andre HOU WR - 5 5.05 Moss, Randy OAK WR - 3 2.08 Moss, Santana WAS WR - 8 4.08 Wayne, Reggie IND WR - 6 3.05 Baker, Chris NYJ TE - 9 19.05 Witten, Jason DAL TE - 3 7.05 Gostkowski, Stephen NEP PK - 6 18.08 Wilkins, Jeff STL PK - 7 20.08 Cowboys, Dallas DAL Def - 3 13.05 20 Total Players I went with Najeh(back then) because he started that preseason game. Seems to be a bad move now.Went with Betts a little early with Portis injury and Saunders praise for him that he'll play regardless. Duckett signing sorely hurts.Harrison-planned, think he could be OK in PPR. Wanted he or Kevin Faulk similar reasons. Curtis-well ya just never know, what a gem of a pick if he comes backMike Anderson-Jamal has a hip injury and ?(Ankle? knee?) at the same time, minor but made me wonder. Billick did not show any inkling toward Musa at that time so I think the Musa love here is a little rich.Stephen Davis-about the time he and Rams were talking. Jax doesn't give me the impression he's gonna play 16 games. Moore-Well Taylor's never been a picture of health nor has any Minny RB in recent memory.I'm "cool" everywhere else. My WRs absolutely rock if Randy plays 80% as well as he used to and I'm coverred if he sits and whines. Starting lineups are not so restrictive. If one RB pans out, I have an excellent team very tough to match up with. Without, I'll have to battle and worry every week.Figured this thread could use a finished example

If you played in a league where you start 3WRs and a flex/ I can see this approach working out better. WR's have a more even play comparing them to RB's. That guy has essentially grabbed an equivalent of two top 10 RBs and a top 15 RB but at the WR's position according to the numbers. I need to get into a PPR league

Historically, highly rated WRs tend to be less of a bust risk than second-tier RBs (i.e. everyone once the first 4 or 5 RBs are off the board). As a result, I think this strategy has a lot of merit. With 4 highly rated WRs, odds are great that this team will be able to field 3 top-20 WRs this season. Since he only needs to start one RB, I think there'll be a lot of value late in the draft (either from a Benson/Jones combo, a Mike Bell, a Frank Gore, an Ahman Green, a Dominic Rhodes, or a Lawrence Maroney type). I agree that I wouldn't have passed on Droughns in the 4th, but this strategy (WR-WR-WR) actually looks pretty solid to me, especially given your league's starter requirements.
