Internet "firsts"... (1 Viewer)

No Usenet users back in the day?

Porn didn't start out free on the web at first.
I was a regular at alt.duke.basketball.sucks.sucks.sucks :bag:
RSFF 20 years ago. Donny, fugees, Beal, and of course THE magnificent *******. Dang...
rec.sports.basketball.pro was where I first saw player and team analysis using what is now known as "advanced stats". A lot of arguments about the validity of evaluating players by looking at their production per 48 minutes played rather than per game played.Dean Oliver worked out some of the concepts behind "Basketball On Paper" in threads there. RSBP was the first place I read about eFG%, reconciling the lower percentage of shooting three-pointers with the higher reward of making them.

I have very little memory of porn websites before xvideo came on the scene. Usenet was so strong.
I vaguely remember searching for passwords to the "adult verification service" networks... you'd find a working login and then have access to however many hundreds of sites used that service to check ID.

Usenet, too, of course, but downloading 75 pieces of binaries and then assembling them all was such a pain.
Well there were much better aggregators as recently as 1994. Eventually you'd just subscribe to a feed and it would just grab it all.

Amateur Thumbs was my go to for quite awhile

Before that I remember one that didn't even have thumbnail previews, just a text link like "IT'S A PICNIC, AND SLUTTY'S FORGOTTEN THE MUSTARD"

I think my first email was from University IT department telling me that I can't use the campus Internet access for Usenet chat rooms.

Discovered mIRC because I needed something to do for the 45-60 mins to download a 60 second video clip. 14.4 to 28k was a Godsend. Nothing pissed me off more when the clip wasn't what the title was.

Coming from ASCII porn on my 486, where it was hard to tell what was what, being disappointed was common, but wasting all that time was what put it over the top.
