Interview w/Joe Bryant & David Dodds (1 Viewer)

Finally, a few personal questions.

How in the world does Joe have time to run a boat business, FBG, run triathlons and handle a wife and 4 kids?

As I said above, Starbucks and Visine. Seriously, I have the same philosophy throughout my whole life. Surround yourself with really talented people. At Bryant Boats, I’ve got some super talented and motivated people around me. They make it easy. My best piece of advice to guys is to marry above yourself. I certainly did that. The iron man triathlon stuff keeps me out of trouble.

Don’t ask me. I couldn’t do it. I have trouble juggling the website, poker, strippers and the midgets that come by on Tuesdays.

Who do you guys respect in the fantasy football community?
Our Staff.Really though, there are some good people out there. At the risk of accidentally leaving someone out, let me just say there are some good ones. Bob Harris gave me my start writing in this business and I’ll always be thankful for that.

There are a lot of people that work hard in this industry. Fortunately for us, many work for us. Guys like Drinen and Henderson have revolutionized this hobby in my opinion. I am a big fan of Bob Harris’ work. We made a play to hire him full-time, but that play backfired for us. I believe our staff is second to none and among the leading experts in this field. Outside of Footballguys, people like Mike Hall (MyFantasyLeague), Greg Alan (4for4, FFTOC), David Dorey and Whitney Walters (The Huddle), John Hansen (Guru Report) all deserve high praise for the sites they run.

How does Joe feel about the content of the site and the changes in VBD as he originally put it? He writes the couch potato Monday morning QB thing, but what are his thoughts about VBD and how it has changed since he first published his work on value based drafting. All the stuff that has come after the basics of VBD have been created by others. Has Joe followed those changes or is he still a "simple VBD guy" at heart?

I did name it Joe's secret formula.....LOL

VBD is a core part of the site. I’m hoping to squeeze time to write more on it to reflect some of the my newer thoughts. Many folks have taken it and tweaked a bit here and there. Some helpful. Some not so much.

David, since you've won your WSOP seat you stated you were going to play tourneys in favor or ring games. How has that been going and do you feel your tourney game is at a level where your going to be ready to make a solid showing at the WSOP this year?

I am still pretty new to poker, but I think I have pretty good skills. I used to be a World Class Backgammon player and I think it is roughly the same mind that can do well in poker. It doesn’t shock me to see Gus Hansen, Dan Harrington, Tim Lester all make the transition from backgammon to poker. Hopefully I can continue that trend with a respectable showing in the WSOP. My game is as good as it’s ever been. I feel like I am peaking at just the right moment. I am so looking forward to seeing how I match up against the best in the world. It will probably be a very humbling experience.

OK we're about to wrap up here, but we can not leave before asking what is on everyone's mind.

Turn ons, turn offs?

As I get older, I find that I have a difficult time hanging around stupid people. I like things that make me think and it’s a reason I enjoy what we have created here so much. Turn ons: Hanging around smart people, poker, a good book, Sunday Ticket, making FBG all that it can be. Turn offs: Stupid people (includes most closed-minded people, people that disrespect others, people that can’t think for themselves and form logical conclusions, people that screw up the environment, etc), most TV.

[DrewRoenhaus]Next Question[/DrewRosenhaus]Or more accurately, let's let that be the last question. Thanks to everyone for submitting the questions. Clayton, thanks for the work on this. And thanks to you guys for reading and being a part of the forums. It's nothing without you guys.

Thanks.

J

I enjoyed this a lot. Off to the parents house to help them stuff magazines and Golden Tickets into envelopes for early mailings on Thursday

Eagerly awaiting the DD, PD and LD strategy articles. I've been messing around with the DD quite a bit lately and look forward to learning more about the best ways to use it in "crunch time".

would like to see this take place more often, where we could get a chance to dive more into the reasonings and thoughts of the fantasy football side of things.

You're such a freak D.D. Juggling midgets. Got to love it.

these guys have their act together...a model for business owners or prospective ones out there. sense of humor + passion + commitment to customer service + recognition that their business is built on the foundation of their capable employees.

Backfired in that Fantasy Sports Publications offered more money and we didn't get him. So essentially we burned a bridge in the industry with nothing to show for it.

Thanks David, however, I do agree with the sarge here. It doesn't sound like a bridge has been burned, you'll get him next time around!

I didn't know the interview was coming, so didn't get to submit this question. But still surprised it didn't come up...

Any chance that FBG starts its own league management website? If not, why? If so, what would it take to get things rolling?

Hi PH,That's not in the plans at least for now. It's sort of like what I was saying in the interview. Our big question when I look at new ventures is "What's out there and is it good?" When I looked at the high stakes league area as we considered FFTOC, it was obvious that what was out there was severely lacking and we could do tons better. When I look at league management, I don't feel that. It may change in the future, but right now, I think what's out there is good and I don't know what we'd do that would be signficantly better. So we're going to sit tight there at least for this year.

My midget come by on Wednesday. What do you think? Same midgets?

That was a fun read. The "running a business through email" stuff really intrigues me.

If I had been present, I would have liked to have pursued a line of questioning concerning "free lance writing". When you guys look for contributions to enhance the website, are you looking primarily for articles that are directly relevant to "winning" in fantasy football, or is the main goal to be provocative as long as fantasy football is (at least) implicit in what is being written? If that makes sense.

I've got a question that didn't get answered that you fellas may or may not want to address, but how much did the Huddle going to a paid message board affect your business, and do the reprecussions of that move on their part have anything to do with you guys keeping the message boards free?
Hi pro,I don't think it had much effect on our business. We have some huddle guys I'm sure but it's not like we got a lot of their guys or anything.

It definitely didn't have any effect on me wanting to keep the boards free.

:goodposting: As a business major right now I'm impressed with how well this is put together and especially considering that there is hardly any face to face interaction.

Good read. I have been with FBGs for around 6 years now (I believe..well I was around when the old message board didnt start crashing yet) and I have seen many improvements over the years. The MB being free was always a hot topic even back then.. but imo it is that plus the free emailings that helped build this site into what it is today. You don't change something that has been a keystone to your success imo and I applaud your decision to maintain status quo. Keep up the good work guys.

One thing that I would like to see is Special Teams rankings.. projections etc. ...and more importantly why you see it them way you do. Is there any plans on getting that added?

This is such a cool thread. Really informative for new members in that we learn a lot about the guys who run the site and what their plan is. The fact that you guys value members contributions has always come across, but this really spells it out. I'd love to hear about how the FantasyPlayers.com relationship has affected your business and how you feel about the future of the industry.
