Interviewer Questions / Advice (1 Viewer)

I'm going to be conducting 6 interviews on Monday, the first time in my career that I have this opportunity to do so. I'm in a group of 3 people where we each individually interview 6 people and then go back, offer our feedback, etc.

The interview will be structured, there are a set of questions that I believe I need to ask and take notes on the reaction. I do have concerns about trying to type while listening and I'd much rather listen and offer my thoughts later, but apparently, I have to turn in some response form.

Anyways, each interview is 30 minutes long, and while I will be nervous myself, hopefully will get better as I do a few of these, and I've been encouraged to ask questions in response to their reaction to the original question being asked, and, time permitting, ask some of my own questions.

This is for a data analysis position - some of these resumes that I've seen our for data programming, which will be a let down if they realize what they will be doing instead.

So, what I'm looking - what are some creative questions you've asked (or been asked) as part of an interview? What advice do you have for me, doing this for the first time? What do you look for, key in on, when doing these interviews?

Thanks for the advice and questions!

It's always good to see how someone thinks... I sat down for an interview a few years back and out of left field the guy asked me the square root of 7... I instantly replied 2.75, the correct answer was something like 2.65, but he was impressed by the quick response and asked how I came up with that number - It was a good question bc it showed him how I arrived at an answer and processed the information. Might be an interesting question out of left field for a data analysis position.

I went through a series of interviews for my current job, and the one that I thought was the most effective was the one where a guy at the beginning asked what my previous job was (bartender), then he said, alright, "If you were to automate your job and remove the bartender, what would that system look like?" After about 15 minutes of me talking, he then asked "Ok, now build me a system that measured a bartenders effectiveness, what kind of measurements would that require?"

Those were the only two questions he asked the entire time, other than random probing questions about the "system" I was designing.

That was easily my favorite interview and felt like he understood me more than the stock "Tell me about a time you went above and beyond" etc etc
