iPad

Look, we all know Apple didn't invent cell phones and they didn't invent touch screens. Just like they didn't invent the mouse or the desktop UI. What they did, as they always do, is recognize the potential, build upon existing concepts, push the boundries of what anyone before them has done, refine and expand upon them in brand new ways, and implement them into new devices that actually make sense and are a joy to use. Most importantly, they lead the way for everyone else, showing the world how to create products that change the world. Apple is flag-bearer. The path finder. They forge ahead into markets where others have stagnated or failed and show everyone the correct way. Apple didn't invent the tablet computer. But that entire sector was a massive fail every time ANY other company in the world attempted it. Until Apple showed the way. Again.
This is hard to argue with.

My current apps/functionality wish list:

- The Google G-chat app is slow and awkward. I want a slim/light Gchat app.

- Audio streaming out. I don't think this is possible yet, but would be very cool if I could bluetooth or Wifi connect to some speakers or the home audio system and run from that.

- Bluetooth audio streaming in my car. Actually, I'm reading that this is possible with the iPhone, so if it is, and then likewise possible from iPad (via some Audi bluetooth kit), then maybe the point above is doable as well?

- Citrix. There is a Citrix receiver app, but it requires some special setup on our corporate network's side (which they don't have). A regular Citrix ICA connection would be moneybag.

- Full-on video out. As it stands I think you can only pump out the video from Keynote. I have the VGA adapter, and it would be nice to pump out video from the screen to a larger screen for presentations (showing web stuff, etc.). If you remember, Jobs did this (wirelessly!) during his presentation when the iPad was introduced. Did he have a specially configured one with extra hardware? Or was there some special software set up to pipe the video out over a wifi connection? If the latter, that would be super cool...

- A decent car mount. We had it in the car during a couple long drives the past few days, and it was awesome. Came in huge for using the "beat the traffic" app, the Google maps, AroundMe to find a restaurant, the Fandango app to find a theater and buy tickets to Iron Man 2, and then just watching some videos (as noted, it would be even more awesome if we could pump bluetooth audio from it, but I think this may be doable) I seated it right below the nav screen in my Audi, kind of leaning up against the AC controls etc. It's amazing how much better Apple is at designing interfaces than the car manufacturers (and their suppliers). An iPad in the dash would be amazing, but I don't need anything quite that custom. Just something to hold it solidly in place would be good. What was even more interesting to me was thinking this through further -- most Nav system options in the cars these days run around $2k. And you still have to pay 12 bucks a month if you want sat radio. I would so much rather pop an $800 iPad into the dash, have someone custom install it for a few hundred bucks, and have that run all my nav functions, music system, and on top of that, just pay the 30 bucks a month for 3G and full internet instead of the 12 for sat radio. And the added bonus of popping it out when you want to and taking it with you. Pretty sweet, and makes the iPad seem like a bargain when you think of it in those terms...

How many times are the haters gonna get themselves owned in here? It's like they're lining up to jump off the cliff and can't get there fast enough. I mean, I get that we're all annoying on both sides of the fence, but jesus.
Weren't you the one saying crazy stuff like Apple created the touchscreen/multitouch and pinch-zoom is an app? Both of which are entirely untrue.
They didn't? Link me to the product released before the iPhone. (and not a patent)
Already did...like 20 pages (or 40 depending on settings) ago. Like I said then, I worked for a company in the '80s that sold touchscreen computers to schools.
:lmao: :lmao: :lmao: Good lord, you're actually comparing 1980's "touchscreen" monitors to Apple's multitouch?! Really? That's like saying Motorola invented the iPhone. :lmao:

In my view the original tech is what changed the world. If you think the original cell phone did not change the world but the iPhone did then your not looking at the overall picture. Apples strong point is getting the tech to the consumer in an easy to use product with strong marketing behind it. Being a joy to use is an opinion and really depends on what your doing with the technology.

There are few instances in any business when a 'game changer' comes along. Yes, the original technology counts as one of those instances. And then it stagnates or slowly evolves for decades. It's so very rare for a single company to make a 'game changer' even once. Apple has done it four, five times now in several different markets. They have a rare mix of consumer understanding, technological innovation, design prowess and manufacturing experience that is unmatched by any other company in the world.IMO you put too much emphasis on the marketing. Yes, they have strong marketing. But if the product fails to live up to the hype all the money in the world won't make it a 'game changer'. To pin Apple's recent success on their marketing smacks of being either lazy, uninformed or having ulterior motives. If it were that easy, every company would do it. Even Apple has had their share of failures despite their marketing.

Time for this week's updated rankings....

***OFFICIAL*** Coach Otis' Annoying iPad Hater Rankings

1. Goggins (Rising)

My, what a rush up the charts. Has anyone ever gone from 0 to 60 this quickly? In our prior rankings, we noted that Goggins had come out of the gates strong but had shown waning interest in recent weeks, which was we he was initially ranked so low. The G-man didn't disappoint though, as he responded some time later that he was away on vacation, and that's why he hadn't been so annoying in here. And now that he's back, he's been tearing up the scene. He's still not as grating as some of the other Hateboi's here, but we are left so perplexed by his bizarre and unfounded claims regarding consumer confusion (including regarding alleged confusion by posters in this very thread) that we simply couldn't resist putting him at the top. Oh, that smell of smoke? That's Gogs furiously pounding away at his keyboard trying to Google search for any minor bit of information that might support his ridiculous off-the-cuff claims.

2. LokiKx (Neutral)

Loki remains in neutral. He is still a horrifically boring alias drummed up to post only in Apple threads, and he still regularly pops in to post unfunny and tired jokes about the iPad being a crappy product or having a funny name. <insert that one picture that we've totally never seen before of the guy holding an iPhone under a magnifying glass to make it look like an iPad> Don't let the million+ buyers confuse you. This thing is junk. Still way up there in the post count, and remains in neutral, ol' faithful. I mean, if you have to create an alias specifically for this purpose, you really do deserve to be in the top 5 indefinitely, no? Around here, effort matters.

3. The Commish (Falling)

After taking an absolute beating about the misinformation he had posted, and one of the more epic backpedals the FFA computer geeks have seen in recent history, Commish skulked into the corner and has since quieted down. We're hoping he's got a second wind, but until he really brings his A game again, he'll be relegated to being considered one of the less annoying haters, and his stock will continue to slip as a result. Don't count him out just yet though!

4. gmbacm (Neutral)

Continues to ease back on the throttle, and doesn't poke in here often enough to be terribly annoying. But, when he posts, you just know it either won't make much sense or will be in some way unsatisfying. We'll leave him in the top 5 on that basis alone.

5. Card Trader (Falling)

An early frontrunner continues to fall, and continues to make rational, sensible postings that are grounded in logic and surprisingly un-annoying. At this electrifying pace, CT is likely to fall right off the bottom of the chart in our next ranking.

That's all for today folks -- see you next week.
Otis, time to update the ranking. There is more nonsense from people who have never used an iPad.Obama:

"You're coming of age in a 24/7 media environment that bombards us with all kinds of content and exposes us to all kinds of arguments, some of which don't always rank that high on the truth meter," he told the students. "And with iPods and iPads, and Xboxes and PlayStations -- none of which I know how to work -- information becomes a distraction, a diversion, a form of entertainment, rather than a tool of empowerment, rather than the means of emancipation. So all of this is not only putting pressure on you; it's putting new pressure on our country and on our democracy."

I'm doing/did no such thing. Otis/Redding said the iPhone was the first usable TOUCHSCREEN. Which is incorrect. Really.

Thats fair, but I don't think apple invented multitouch. Or touch screens. Just seems to me they've made the first real product that uses this, and it does it extremely well. Your link has dozens of research and lab projects, and not a single product I've ever heard of. Did apple just steal technology and win by good marketing? Or did they win because they do this stuff earlier and better than everyone else? I think it's the latter.
You had said first usable touchscreen, whereas touchscreens date back to the late 50s and have been used in production devices for 30 or so years. Multitouch is a little different. Apple claimed they invented multitouch which is far from true. What they did was swoop up two of the early brains in multitouch technology. They do get credit for bringing it to the common consumer though. Not sure why this phone never took off.

I'm trying to get back on the list. I might be forced to post the picture of Otis and his prom date...or was it homecoming. I forget. Either way, it was very nice.

Has Apple ever really claimed they "invented" multitouch?
Yes. We all know Jobs is full of himself.
"We have invented a new technology called 'multi-touch' which is phenomenal," Jobs said. "It works like magic."

Apple has a patent on multi touch.Link

Touch screen device, method, and graphical user interface for determining commands by applying heuristics

Abstract

A computer-implemented method for use in conjunction with a computing device with a touch screen display comprises: detecting one or more finger contacts with the touch screen display, applying one or more heuristics to the one or more finger contacts to determine a command for the device, and processing the command. The one or more heuristics comprise: a heuristic for determining that the one or more finger contacts correspond to a one-dimensional vertical screen scrolling command, a heuristic for determining that the one or more finger contacts correspond to a two-dimensional screen translation command, and a heuristic for determining that the one or more finger contacts correspond to a command to transition from displaying a respective item in a set of items to displaying a next item in the set of items.

My current apps/functionality wish list:- Audio streaming out. I don't think this is possible yet, but would be very cool if I could bluetooth or Wifi connect to some speakers or the home audio system and run from that.
This is definitely something I'm watching for. I honestly thought it'd be a no brainer for some company to make an app that allows you to control your household media via the iPad. How sweet would it be if the iPad could turn on the PS3 on and then stream music to it played by surround sound?

I don't think blue tooth or wifi is available but I thought one of the docks had an audio output for speakers.

In 2006 Apple acquired a company called FingerWorks which had been working on developing MultiTouch since 1998. Apple acquired all of it's patents and intellectual property which it used as the basis for their MultiTouch technology. Feel free to provide links that prove that Apple didn't continue development of this on their own. The Slate article only points to Jeff Han's TED presentation prototype in '06, Microsoft SURFACE and Tom Cruise in Minority Report. Does Slate realize that it's a movie and not real, working technology? :lmao: :lmao: :lmao: Seriously, you're trying too hard here. Yes, there may be others that were working on similar concepts concurrently, but Apple (through the acquisition of FingerWorks), did in actuality invent their version of MultiTouch. They were also the first to implement it in a wide-release consumer product (as far as I can tell). Microsoft's surface uses similar concepts, but the technology is far different. It uses three cameras to sense hand movement; that's why it has to be housed in a large table and is completely unusable in a hand-held device.

Something like this would work well for an ipad hanging around the house, turning it into a universal remote for all your devices.http://www.powera.com/iphone/iphone.asp?se...n=0∏=1#

Already posted the history of multitouch. It precedes anything Apple or Fingerworks did. Then there's this. Apple sued over patent

Their (Elan) patent which was filed in 1996 and awarded in 1998. Link

They've (Elan) already won a similar suit versus Synaptics.

And? Do you have some ability to see into the future and know the outcome of this case? The fact the a suit has been filed hardly constitutes evidence. Please read my post again, especially the bolded. Patents handed out are based on each companies individual implementation of the MultiTouch concept. Apple was granted their patent based on how they used the MultiTouch concept in their iPhone OS, which as developed based on IP that they own and developed. I've already acknowledged that other groups were working on similar concepts during the same time. Not sure what you're fishing for here. It'll be up to the IP professionals to decide if Apple infringed on Elan or if HTC infringed on Apple.

Can't see into the future but they've passed the first hurdle: The ITC agreed on Monday that the complaint warrants an investigation.Like in the Synaptics case they'll probably settle.

For posterity sake....I think the "swype" technology HTC has come up with is fantastic.....that's pretty damn cool IMO.
Not HTC. Developed by the guy who invented the T9 text input. Love it though. Guy is going to make a mint off it.
It was sarcasm.
:cry:Can I blame it on dehydration?
No worries....been following it for some time now and it's really cool to see it out in real world circulation. Oh, and IN before Otis comes in mocking the fact that you actually work in the tech industry. Can't believe it's taken him this long.

 Can I blame it on dehydration?
No worries....been following it for some time now and it's really cool to see it out in real world circulation. Oh, and IN before Otis comes in mocking the fact that you actually work in the tech industry. Can't believe it's taken him this long.
:lmao: I was going to put that in my post, big bold font and !!!! and all that, but didn't. 25 years and all Fortune 500 companies.

Dammit! just gave him more ammo.

Morning Otis!!! How's the little lady doing? Hope all good now.

3Cs,

Apple gets sued dozens of times every year in patent cases. As does every other big and successful tech company. Put down the stick, take off the blindfold, and stop swinging wildly at the pinata, before you hurt yourself.
 Yeah, sure. I've worked for several very large tech companies. And still do. None of them get sued every year.
No not every year. Every month. The successful ones anyway. But again, you have no idea what you're talking about. And i promise you i do.

For posterity sake....I think the "swype" technology HTC has come up with is fantastic.....that's pretty damn cool IMO.

Easy there MIT. We're all in over our heads here, so give us a minute to catch up.

Of course I don't. I've worked for 25 years in "tech" for 5 different Fortune 500 companies (that does show success, right?) and none of them were sued every month or every year. Apple gets sued repeatedly because they continuously infringe on other peoples work. They did it with/too Creative and lost, sorry settled, and quite possibly will have the same result with Elan.

What does "in tech" mean? You plug in monitors? And you're wrong. Every successful company gets sued a whole lot, in patent cases, and many of those cases have no merit. Also patent law is a whole lot more complex than "we invented multitouch first."

You're lost here.

Ever notice how it's always the "tech professionals" that are the biggest Apple bashers? This is a pattern I've noticed in the real world and it plays out here on the web. Seems to me you guys have so much invested in being the PC know-it-all's you are actually threatened by Apple's success. Sure, you'll immediately dismiss this thought with a series of 'laughing smilies' posts, but I think I'm on to something here.

My current apps/functionality wish list:

- Audio streaming out. I don't think this is possible yet, but would be very cool if I could bluetooth or Wifi connect to some speakers or the home audio system and run from that.
This is definitely something I'm watching for. I honestly thought it'd be a no brainer for some company to make an app that allows you to control your household media via the iPad. How sweet would it be if the iPad could turn on the PS3 on and then stream music to it played by surround sound?
Something like this would work well for an ipad hanging around the house, turning it into a universal remote for all your devices.http://www.powera.com/iphone/iphone.asp?se...n=0∏=1#
This is the one genuine use I could see the iPad easily fulfill. I am surprised Apple didn't include the necessary hardware to make it a reality. The price point competes directly with remotes of similar (smaller) form factors. Perhaps the lack of hw buttons would lessen the attractiveness, but it is the first thing I thought of when I saw the device.

I only do the :lmao: to mock those who do it first. Take a look back at my post you quoted and then what you posted. I don't do PCs, but thanks for playing. Not at all "threatened" by anything Apple does. Not at all in the same market. And I'm not an Apple basher/hater. I'm actually quite happy they were able to come back from the brink and stick it to Gates a little.

Oh, that really hurt. Yeah, I plug in monitors. Years of education and a true FBG salary to do it too. :lmao:

What were your years of education in? And where did you study? And if it helps you any, knowledge of tech does not equate to knowledge of patent law.Are you real in yor 50s? You seriously come off as a high school kid.

:lol:And I don't need to know patent law to know the companies I've worked for were not sued every month. Sorry that's so difficult for you to grasp.Gotta run. Have to plug in some monitors. :bye:

You monitor every patent lawsuit filed against your companies? Every big high tech company with successful products is regularly sued in patent cases in the US. You haven't told us where you work (though you've tried desperately to let us know they were FORTUNE 2501!111 companies, and that you make a lot of money), but Apple isn't the only tech company regularly sued for patent infringement. If you think a patent infringement suit suggests that Apple is a "thief," or still didn't contribute some innovation in its products (including in multitouch), then you ought to include in your list of thieves:Sony, Dell, Microsoft, HP, Samsung, Motorola, AT&T, Nokia, Panasonic, LG, Verizon, Toshiba, Google, Cisco, Fujitsu, IBM, Intel, RIM and HTC, because they are all constantly being sued in patent cases. Constantly.

But I know, you do some database admin or somesuch nonsense, so they would have told you if the company were being sued in a patent case, so this must be totally false.

Can you boys put away your Ipeens and get back bashing and defending the ipodtouch XXXL?
It's iPeens. The lower case "i" followed by the upper case "P" or other letter is a very important part of the Apple trademark. (iMac, iPod, iPhone, iTunes, iWork, iLife... etc). TIA.

Your incessant attempts to mock and/or belittle people is amusing. Keep up the good work.

I suppose when you're in the business of misinformation, the truth hurts, doesn't it. Anyway, yes, you've secured a high spot in the next rankings. Now let's move on to something more productive.

Well my work here is done then. :wall:

lord almighty.

Why do I keep coming back into this thread thinking some actual information about the iPad is being shared?

Will you guys PLEASE start your own thread and, Otis, stop being The Lawyer and feel the need to respond to

every single little post. For all the good iPad info you've posted, you've posted twice as much crap.

this is for me, I guess... :tinfoilhat:
