iPhone 7 (1 Viewer)

I've never owned a smartphone.  I use a Tracfone which mostly serves my purposes fine.  But I'm considering buying a refurbished iPhone 7 since they are being sold for around $200.  I'm mostly going to use the phone for it's camera, maps, and occasional browsing the internet with wifi.  I probably won't even get a phone plan (I'll probably have the Skype app on it for when I need to make a call).  Is this a dumb purchase?  I've heard that Apple will stop supporting it in September 2022.  Does that mean the phone won't work at all?  Not even the camera or browsing the web on wifi?

It will still work, they'll just stop pushing out updates for the operating system. After some time some of your apps may stop working, depending on how they update. Some force you to update to the newest version, which might be incompatible with your no-longer-supported device at that point. But there are usually other apps that can replace whatever you were using.

Also, maps won't work without a data plan (I don't think? Someone correct me if I'm wrong), but there are some apps that let you download maps for offline use. "maps.me" is one I have checked out before. You'd just need to make sure it's updated before you head out anywhere away from your wifi.

If you’re primarily going to use the phone as a camera get a Samsung Galaxy instead of an iPhone.  I have an iPhone and my wife has a Samsung Galaxy.  I can’t begin to tell you how much better the Samsung pictures are.  We always use her phone instead of my phone for impromptu snaps.

Do you have an iPhone 7?  It gets good reviews for it's camera (some reviews say the camera had been lacking in earlier models).  Which Samsung Galaxy are you recommending?  It seems the Galaxy s7 is cheaper than the iPhone 7 and the Galaxy s8 is more expensive.

I still roll with an iPhone 6s because I don’t see the point in upgrading.

She has the Galaxy 10+.  Even with that big difference in model recency, though, everyone I know with newer iPhones concedes that the Galaxy always has the better camera when comparing models that came out around the same time.

After looking at some reviews, it does seem the Samsung Galaxy s7 is a better purchase than the iPhone 7.  It has a better camera, longer lasting battery, bigger screen, and is $50 cheaper.  I guess people buy iPhones for status?

  I got a 7 when my carrier was giving them away with a .01 per month lease.  I was strictly Andriod previously, but everyone in my family preferred iOS so I wanted a low risk way to try it out.

I have found the battery to be better than my Android experiences (S2, Note4, Moto4), though not a 1 for 1 comparison.

Wife used to have a Samsung. Made her get an iPhone.

She and I are much happier. Way easier to use.

The newer iPhones have better cameras. Not sure how it all compares.

I like my iPhone for how everything can flow easy from my Mac to my iPad to my iPhone, etc. Easily sharing information via calendar, contacts, pictures and more.

If that doesn't interest you, then you are probably better off going with whatever you can get a better deal on. Either way, you will likely not need a brand new one, since you will not be pushing the edge of the envelope with what you are using it for. App-wise you will be able to find what you need for both versions.

I'd look for the iPhone 7 Plus for what you're wanting to use it for.  Much better camera than the 7, longer lasting battery, bigger screen and all the ease of use of the iPhone.

LOL at comparing the iPhone 6s camera to the Galaxy 10+ as if that's some sort of valid comparison.

A lot of it has to do with what kind of desktop/laptop you have and what apps/software you use. An iPhone will be more compatible with other apple products. Also, Apple tends to be easier to use imo and have a reputation for lasting longer/being more reliable. I’m not sure if that is still true but it used to be for sure and that reputation has done well for them.
