Is Chess a Sport?

Jay Coakley (sports sociologist/author) includes the notion that sport is an "institutionalized competitive physical activity" in his description of what a sport is.  This type of definition would eliminate roofball from consideration.
I like the brevity of Coakley's definition, and yes, it would exclude roofball due to the lack of institutionalization. However, I think the brevity is also its downfall, as the phrase "competitive physical activity" is extremely broad.

I think Golf is a competitive physical activity.  So are many running events.

Of course his definition is incomplete.  To properly define a sport it would need to be a rather lengthy rule book.

However, the "institutionalization" aspect is just a better way of saying that people need to actually think of it as a sport.

He actually goes into more detail than what I quoted.  I was just trying to highlight the "institutionalize" part.  I can probably quote more fully later when I get home an look at the book.

I let my kid beat me at chess to boost his ego.  My wife said I was a good sport.  So, yes?

Alas, chess is a game of skill but lacks the physical exertion to be a "sport".
