Tough category, b/c it is hard to define.

Flagg showed up maybe 5 times or so in the series, si ut us a limited ARC thing.

Guys like Huggy bear, Newman, etc. are difficult b/c while they weren't in every show, they were regular characters.

If we take guys like The Costanzas, Newman, and other "real regulars" (Puddy is in this category as well), we are left with seinfeld guys like Sue Ellen Mishky, The short dude (kramers friend), the attorney (Childs) and those players.

For MASH it would be Flagg, Sidney, and one or two others (can't think of their names)...

Probably Scrubs has some of the best of this b/c of who they have brought in for a few story arcs.

Janice on Friends was probably the only modern one that comes close to a guy like Flagg in this case. Every time she showed up it was gold on that show.
 So many - The Todd is probably the most memorable, but the episodes with Brendan Frazier were also very good and had heart to them.

Another from the 80s...

From Night Court:

Brent Spiner (Data from Star Trek: NG) as Bob Wheeler:
 Someone mentioned Harry Anderson himself earlier ... but it took WAY too long for someone to mention the actual show Night Court. It has probably has half of the top 10 side characters by itself.

I'll name three more off the top of my head: (1) John Astin as Judge Stone's father Buddy, (2) Yakov Smirnoff as, um, Yakov, and (3) vertically-challenged actor Daniel Fishman playing Dan Fielding's boss.
One more from that show would be Mel Tormé. He was incredible as himself being Harry's favorite musician. RIP Mel.

Who was the old drunk guy at the end of the bar in Cheers that would just occasionally have a one liner on the show. Not saying he was a top 5 or 10 in the category, but he had some funny one-liners.
Paul
No it wasn't Paul. This guy was older. Paul was similar age with Norm and Cliff.I can't find him on the Cheers ImDb page, too many without pics. This guy looked like he belonged sitting outside the barber shop on Andy Griffith. I recall him making sexual innuendos toward Rebecca Howe. His line seemed to be at the end of each episode and just came out of nowhere. He wasn't part of the normal conversation.Looks like his name was "Al" played by Al Rosen according to the Cheers Wikipedia site.

Al ruled.[Cliff rattles off statistics about Boston.]Al: Get out of here!Cliff: Are you questioning my figures?Al: No, I want you to get out of here! :lmao:

I've always liked JK Simmons; he's played the psychologist in Law and Order. He's probably in 2-4 episodes a season through most of the 20 year run of the show.

That's what I think of as a "side" character vs. a supporting character.

I also like the main coroner and CSI Las Vegas, but he's in the majority of episodes. Robert David Hall.

If there was one actor from "OZ" who seemed destined for obscurity after the show ended, it was him. A short, pudgy bald-headed guy who played a Nazi homosexual rapist would not appear to have a long range of options. How odd that he has had the most prolific career of anyone else in the cast.

Love all of the guest characters that they get in Psych. A couple of weeks ago Cary Elwes was on again in the season premier and he was great. Not one of the top 5, but a great regular side-one is the guy who plays the coroner, Kurt Fuller. He is hysterical.
