Is Gates finished as a top 3 TE? (1 Viewer)

Looks like this toe injury won't go away and will limit him all season. To what extent is unknown but if anyone saw how limited he wa sin the playoffs it was considerable. Gates is going round 4-5 ( as early as 3 in some 12 team leagues ) and to be honest at this point right now I can th9ink of 5 other TE's I would rather have -- KWIII,Gonzo,Witten,Cooley and Shockey. Just pissed I guess becasue I traded for Gates a few months thinking his injuury concerns would be well behnd him by now. Looks like he plays but never plays 100% all season.

despite the fact that i wouldnt even consider drafting gates, id still take him over cooley or shockey.

witten

winslow

gonzo/gates

Gates still has the highest upside of any tight end. Choosing between him, Witten, and Winslow is splitting hairs IMO. Depends on what you are trying to do with your team.

Chambers is going to be a beast this year...what we have been witing for all these years finally clicks. Vincent Jackson is playing well. What I am trying to say is that Gates is not the only guy Rivers will look to anymore

Plus I hear they have a guy out of the backfield that likes to catch the ball. Can't seem to remember his name though...

Uhhh, Mike Tolbert?

Back in 2005, Keenan went for 70 917 9, and Gates still got his: 89 1101 10.I know that this year he will be competing with both Chambers and VJax, but I still think there are enough balls to go around for Gates to be elite The fact is teams will actually have to key on Chambers and VJax, which should allow a HEALTHY Gates to continue to create mismatch problems, perhaps moreso than in the past. The big question will be his health, but if healthy, I see him doing his usual: 80 900 9.

And to answer the question, while I could easily see him finishing 3rd behind Witten and Winslow, I just don't think any of the rest of the pack will finish ahead of him barring him missing significant time. He's just too talented for the Chargers to all of a sudden forget about him.

Gates was the first TE off the board for us today...right in the middle of round 3. Apparently someone thinks he is going to have no problem with staying in the top 3. I snatched Witten in round 4 (right about where I was hopeing to see him). I was a little worried about Gates this year, and didn't want to reach too much for him. Seeing Gates go first instead of Witten made the choice all the easier. Winslow was plucked very shortly after that. All 3 were picked within the equivalent of 1.5 rounds in our 10 team league.

He's not finished in the top 3. People like to predict steep declines and palyers being finished because it makes them look smart when it happens. Thye forget wthat when it doesn't happen they look dumb.

He's a top 5 TE in all likelihood this year, with a shot at being #1, and a good shot at being top 3.

Deja Vu anyone?Seems like we've been hearing xxxx WR is really emerging/has really emerged and Rivers/Brees will look to him more this year. If it's not Chambers, it's Jackson. If it's not Jackson, it's Parker. If it's not Parker, it's McCardell.

When Chambers can catch 50% of the time he is targeted he will be a beast. Until then good luck.

I've been avoiding Gates like the plague simply because I doubted whether he could play the entire season and yet his ADP didn't really take a big hit. He's practiced quite a bit though and looks to be on the field, which is half the battle. Probably not a guy I would feel comfortable targeting this year, but I hardly see why his days as the top fantasy TE are over simply because he might have an off year in 2008 as he gets healthy.

The ONLY question is his health, and as I see it, Winslow has as many health questions if not more, than Gates. He is easily still a top three. Will he be number one? I don't know. That isn't quite as clear. But he is still elite. I wouldn't trade him for Winslow or Witten myself and certainly not for anyone else. Shockey? What has he done to deserve tp be placed in such a high strosophere? He hasn't even played all preseason and has injury concersn of his own and has many more quality players to compete with for looks. Don't mention Shockey please as a competitor with Gates. The only one who has is likely to do as well or better IMO is Witten.

Excuse me, but we think Gates will be out of the top 3 because of his toe?

Did anybody look at KWII's medical records?

As far as the WR's cutting into his stats, you might wan't to look at the Browns as well because I think their WR's are better. Don't get me wrong, I rate Gates 3rd at TE this year, but he's pretty close to KWII IMHO.

Check out his numbers in SD...he caught WELL over 50% of passes thrown his way...and I've bashed Chambers for years over his catch percentage (or lack thereof).

A healthy Gates is still the best TE in the game, so I highly doubt he is done as an elite TE. He may start slowly because of his toe, which is the only reason he isn't ranked at the top by me.

He caught 56%(47% in Detroit) for us last year despite running a high percentage of deep/bomb routes (40%).I am a Chargers fan and a long time Chambers basher(pissed when we gave up a 2nd round pick for him and still think we shouldn't have got ourselves into that position in the first place), but he was definitely an asset for us last season.

I get the sense that he's going to play through whatever pain he has in that toe and at the end of the year, you'll say that he's still in the top tier of TE's - but he'll be 'grouped' so to speak and at the bottom of that group to boot.

However, I can see the stories during next years mini-camps saying how Gates is now absolutely at 100% and that he's ready to reclaim his throne as the 'bar none' best TE in the game. You'll hear how he simply couldn't 'explode' in and out of his cuts and that he was probably at 75-80% all year...

...and then he'll have the same year in 2009 that he had in 2008.

Chambers caught around 60% of his targets in San Diego last year. (I say around 60% because FBG does not have target data for week 20 last year, when Chambers caught 7 passes.) So it appears you are predicting he will be a beast this year.

Exceptionally :kicksrock:
XAlthough I should point out, even though there are some bad posts in here about Chambers, I do think Gates finishes as a top 3 TE.
