Is Hue Jackson just crazy enough to start Carson this week? (1 Viewer)

No Eric Berry. I could see the raiders throwing all day on the chiefs.

Interesting blog on this. Hugh Jackson did start Aaron Curry a few days later. He knows and trusts Palmer. It'd be a little like sandlot football, but that is generally good for stats.

Traditional logic would dictate that the Oakland Raiders' new quarterback, Carson Palmer, will take a week or two to learn the Raiders' playbook and become comfortable with the offense enough to get a start. That would mean that Kyle Boller would start this weekend against the Kansas City Chiefs and Palmer would get his first start after the Raiders' bye week, at home against the Denver Broncos. However, as this season has shown, Raiders coach Hue Jackson is anything but predictable.

This is the same guy who ran a fake punt and a fake field goal two weeks in a row. The same guy that traded for outside linebacker Aaron Curry, then gave him the start after only one day of practice with the team. The same guy who went for it on fourth down late in the game against the Cleveland Browns when the chip shot field goal would have given them a three score lead and all but assured a win. With Hue Jackson, you can throw traditional logic out the window like caution to the wind.

I highly doubt that Jackson would start Carson Palmer on Sunday unless he was sure that Palmer was ready to start. By all reports, Palmer is in good physical condition and has spent his time off practicing in Los Angeles with TJ Houshmandzadeh. Therefore, Palmer is probably ready to go physically. All that leaves is how long it will take Palmer to get comfortable with the terminology and playbook in Oakland.

Given the fact that Hue Jackson has worked with Palmer both at USC and when they were both with the Cincinnati Bengals, I would not put it past Jackson to have more faith in Palmer than most would. If Jackson likes what he sees out of Palmer this week, I could very well see Jackson using a dumbed down version of the passing game against the Chiefs so that Palmer could get his feet wet in Oakland sooner rather than later.

Needless to say, regardless of what I or anyone else thinks, it is near impossible to guess what Hue Jackson is going to do next.

Starting a 2 down WLB after a few days is far different than starting a QB.

I would've said no way he plays until after the bye, but Hue left the question wide open when asked in the press conference, so maybe. Hue is definitely a ballsy coach and decision maker, that's for sure.

Not a fan of the move. I think the team can win with Boller ("Kyle, just no picks, buddy boy").

And I'd hate to see Carson turn the wrong way on a handoff, and get buried by some DE. We have one week, then get a bye, then he can face young Tebow at home.

I'm excited Carson is back. It's not my first choice of teams for him to go to, but I like it. He's been so understated around here the last couple years it's bugged me.

Previous poster mentioning the bye sounds perfect.

Also that article made me want TJ to become a WR coach there.

Palmer taking first team reps: Barely 24 hours since joining the Silver and Black, Carson Palmer has already assumed the duties of Oakland’s starting quarterback and all indications are that he will be the man under center on Sunday against Kansas City. The Chiefs have been rather generous to fantasy quarterbacks this year, allowing more than 18 points per contest. But keep in mind that Palmer hasn’t thrown a pass in anger in more than nine months, so you can expect a reasonable amount of rust.

But it’s not all bad for the Raiders’ offense. After all, there’s still Darren McFadden, who is not only one of the league’s top runners, but has proven himself to be a capable receiver out of the backfield. And you shouldn’t be afraid to throw Darrius Heyward-Bey in your lineup. Palmer undoubtedly recognizes who his playmakers are and combined with K.C.’s horrid secondary, DHB should see a number of tosses in his direction.

ESPN/Schefter say Carson will start sunday

Newly acquired Oakland Raiders quarterback Carson Palmer, who hasn't played or practiced since last season, is expected to start Sunday's game against Kansas City, a team official told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

ESPN NFL analyst Jon Gruden says he thinks Carson Palmer could start for the Raiders this week. Plus, Gruden says the Vikings need a spark and rookie QB Christian Ponder could provide that.

Palmer, who has been holding out this season, was dealt Tuesday by the Cincinnati Bengals in exchange for a 2012 first-round pick and a conditional second-rounder in 2013.

Raiders coach Hue Jackson would not say Tuesday whether Palmer would start against the Chiefs. Palmer said it will take some time to learn the offense, build chemistry with his receivers and get back into football shape.

Oakland (4-2) is counting on Palmer to replace the injured Jason Campbell and lead the team back to the playoffs for the first time since 2002.

Jackson believes Palmer is the ideal fit, having recruited and coached him at USC and been an assistant in Cincinnati with Palmer.

"This guy can play and he knows how to play the game and he knows how to elevate the players around him," Jackson said Tuesday.

The Raiders (4-2) became desperate for a quarterback after Campbell broke his collarbone Sunday in a win over the Browns.

Campbell had surgery Monday and was expected to miss at least six weeks, leaving the Raiders with only Kyle Boller and rookie Terrelle Pryor on the roster.

Also Wednesday, the Raiders placed defensive end Matt Shaughnessy on season-ending injured reserve with a shoulder injury. The team made the move to make room on the 53-man roster for Palmer.

The Raiders also signed offensive lineman Zach Hurd to the practice squad.

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.
