Is Kerry Collins a top 10 QB this week? (1 Viewer)

I'm going with Flacco over Collins. Ten years from now I don't want to have to listen to someone say, "Remember that year you had that great team and then for some reason you started Kerry freaking Collins in the playoffs?"

Or it could be like, remember those years you were bold and started Ron Dayne, Jerome Harrison, Drew Bennett and Billy Volek and won a championship.

It really depends on your alternatives, but I don't see how playing Collins over someone like Flacco is a "bold" move. Smacks of over-coaching to me, which is usually my undoing.

In your situation, you're probably right. I have Rodgers and Roethlisberger so I'm taking a chance on Collins.

I'd do the same thing in your situation. Good luck.

Here's the numbers in my league for every QB to face Houston. What you see is passing attempts-completions, yards, TD-INT, and game rank (ie, week 1 vs Houston was Peyton's #1 scoring game of the season)

Code:
Peyton: 40-57, 433, 3-0, 33 (1)McNabb: 28-38, 426, 1-0, 25 (1)Romo: 23-30, 284, 2-0, 22 (3)Gradkowski: 24-39, 278, 2-2, 18 (1)Eli: 27-42, 297, 3-2, 22 (4)Cassell: 20-29, 3-0, 22 (3)ByePeyton: 25-45, 268, 2-0, 23 (5)Rivers: 17-23, 295, 4-1, 28 (2)Garrard: 24-31, 342, 2-0, 28 (2)Sanchez: 22-38, 315, 3-1, 27 (1)Rusty Smith: 17-31, 138, 0-3, 0 (2)Vick: 22-33, 302, 2-1, 31 (3)Flacco: 22-33, 235, 2-0, 19 (7)
So what do we see? First, Rusty Smith is the outlier (and terrible), those numbers get thrown out immediately. For all others, QB points range from 18-33, with an average score of 24.83 points per week. 10 out of 12 QBs had one of their 3 best games of the season (fantasy wise), with 4 having their best. As long as you have confidence that Collins is no Rusty Smith, I am not sure how you could not have complete confidence in starting him. The numbers don't lie. If you have a Rivers/Brady/Peyton/Vick/Brees/Flacco/Schaub, then maybe you don't screw around with a good thing. I wouldn't. But if you have anyone else, I can't see starting them over Collins this week
Thanks, you did the work for me. I was going to put a spread sheet together and now I don't need to. Collins is in and I'm rolling the dice.
I'm going with Collins over Josh Freeman. I did a little further analysis on teams playing houston and teams playing detroit. Keep in mind my team has 0.5 pts per completion, so this inflates the numbers.QB's vs. HOU: Mean 35 ppg, standard deviation of 10QB's vs. DET: Mean 27 ppg, standard deviation of 9so the 66% confidence range for playing houston is 25-45 points, and the range against detroit is 18-36 pts. both include a stinker... rusty smith game and the packers game last week when rodgers came in and flynn was awful. Both include a blowout... brady vs lions on thanksgiving, and the reason why i did this was i wanted to see what the probable bottom was for collins... i think freeman should be around the mean, but the chance of collins putting up a stinker is the fear here for many of us. this eased my fears somewhat... barring an injury, its reasonable to expect collins to have at least 25 pts with an upside in the mid-30's, while freeman is unlikely to crack 30 pts. i need to keep pace with rivers this week and i had an absolute stinker with vernon davis, so i have enough info to know what i need to do this week in the semi's.hope this helps... can't believe i'm starting kerry freakin collins in my semi game.

I agree I think Flacco is the play over Collins but in my situation Im down 65-0 and Im also starting Britt so Collins is my high reward choice.

Going with Collins over Eli, trying for spot in league championship.
I am going back and forth on this one.Just noticed that Bo Scafie is out for the Titans...not sure what type of an affect that has on CollinsManningham is going to play for the Giants but so is Asante Samuel for the Eagles I am sure I will make the wrong choice

I too am benching Eli with confidence. Not worried about Eli's bench points in the least. 10-12 points?

I am seriously considering starting him over Kitna.

Grossman scares me more than anything.

If the D scores and Dallas gets up Kitna's attemps may go down.

The Titans may be in a high scoring game and be forced to throw the ball.

Any thoughts?

I think he has the real possibility of 250/3/2 with upside if it's a shootout. In my league, that is a baseline of 20+ points. Eli has let me down numerous times and now without Steve Smith and Manningham so inconsistent, I am rolling with Collins despite starting Nicks.

i'm rolling with him for the good home matchup, and another reason i haven't read in this thread: he is a UFA next year and may be playing for another contract (back up somewhere):

QB Kerry Collins is the Titans' starting quarterback for the remaining three games of the season, barring injury, but beyond that, not even Collins knows what is at stake for him. Collins' two-year, $15 million contract expires after the season, and the soon-to-be 38 year old is undecided on whether he will continue playing either in Tennessee or elsewhere. Collins' future could be affected by what the Titans do with Vince Young or in the draft at quarterback, and it also might be impacted if a long lockout occurs next season. For now, he will focus on the task at hand. "I know this: I can still play. I'm focused on what we're doing right now. I'm a firm believer that all those things take care of themselves when the time is right. So for that matter, I'm just kind of focused on what we're doing right now," Collins said.

I'm going to play Collins over Garrad in a playoff game agains tthe best team in the league. I can't afford to play it safe and Garrad is banged up.

It's early, but here were my two choices:

Collins: 120 PaYd, 2 PaTD (3,1)

Garrard: 16 PaYd

Ya, you could say I am happy with my choice

Collins may as well have hit the showers after the 1st quarter.

Tenny's D took over, Houston no-showed this game and it was conservative play the rest of the way.

Cost a few people their fantasy seasons today. Should have banked on Rex Grossman instead. :P

I don't know. He got about what I expected. He was more of a "safe" choice than a "high upside" guy. I still think he'll outproduce my choices of Ben and Sanchez.

 I'm surprised at all the negativity here. 237/2/1. Right in line with the point range of QBs facing the Texans. If you lost playing Collins, it wasn't his fault.
