Is Ryan Matthews a good buy low? (1 Viewer)

I'd imagine owners are completely fed up after this weeks performance. Can it get any worse? Now might be a good time to buy this guy while he's sitting at the bottom.

I think so, if you do not need him for a few games. The WR situation is bad right now with injuries and the defenses are stopping the run. I think two things will happen:

1) When they all get healthy and if/when Vincent J gets back, the pass will open up the run.

2) If they keep losing, then it could be that they will want to get him carries this year to see what they really have in him now and for the future.

I could be wrong, but didn't he get benched for awhile after a fumble yesterday? If so I'm sure this also effected both his and the coaches confidence. I feel that he is at an all time low so I trade for him yesterday and gave up Seattle Mike after his career game. I'm not down on BMW, but he would never see my line up with my Wr's. Both are injury insurance, but I always lean towards the potential of a RB coming to fruition over a WR. We will see I guess.....

There was no fumble. Turner obviously feels he isn't versatile enough to keep in while they are behind because he isn't a good pass receiver. I don't think he's gotten much of a chance but he did drop one easy short pass yesterday. The Chargers remind me of the Cowboys. The offense seems to always be in panic mode. Not a good environment for a back like Mathews.

I agree with this and am already thinking who might still see some hope there so I can offer him away. 8 carries. No one had a good day running for that club which is the most disturbing. Everyone has been able to run on NE but they simply couldn't get the yards. Mathews had 8 carries for 15 yards, and Sproles was the only back to average above 3 ypc (2 for 7). They were simply awful running the ball across the board. Comes down to poor play calling and/or line play. Those are two things that are hardest to correct.

I own him and I've been holding...holding...holding. I'm finally thinking about shopping him. Hate to sell when his value is rock-bottom, but I'm at least entertaining the thought...

I think if you have depth from guys like F.Jackson or Torain it's worth taking an upside shot on Mathews. Coming out of their week 10 bye, the Chargers should be healthy and Mathews should be primed for three huge games--Broncos, Colts, Raiders. Even the Texans game in week 9 should yield some numbers.

He's obviously not a three-down player right now, but we all know Norv's affection for the guy. His role is only going to expand, and games like yesterday's comeback attempt will be the exception. I wouldn't give up more than a low RB2 for him, but at this point that could be enough.

JUst think back to LT only a year ago. NOthing really has changed for Matthews here. LT has kind of proven it was not really him as much as the OL and the coach.

Lets see.

Matthews is on a pass first team, still dealing with a HAS, part of a three RB rotation, comes out on the goal line, comes out on third downs.

How much lower can he get??

How do we "know" that? Certainly not by his constant shuffling between the huddle & sideline. His most productive game (from a fantasy standpoint) came his first game back from his ankle injury, & he got carries late in a blow-out w/ the backup QB under center the same game. His lack of playing time since then supposedly has been his still injured ankle....why was he getting caries in that situation?

Another bust pick I made along with Charles, Greene and Finley. Horrible year in FF.
Greene is very disappointing but a must hold, if tomlinson goes down he is a one way ticket to a championship.
No doubt. I am holding the Shonn Greene lottery ticket along with the Javon Ringer lottery ticket in most leagues. Shocked that both LT and CJ2K are both healthy, especially since nearly every other RB has been injured this year.

I am holding the same tickets that I am hoping to cash in soon. :)

Except he's averaging 4.7 YPC.He's bad at pass protection now, which will hurt his utilization especially if they are down like they were yesterday. His schedule doesn't look too bad after Tennessee next week.

Made a move for him 2 weeks ago, and Im starting lynch over him going forward.

RBBC, shares carries at the goalline, not in the game when they are behind because Sproles is the 3rd down/ 2 minute drill back.

Dare I say in TD heavy leagues he is borderline cuttable? I dunno

I try not to be rash and cut guys too early as Bowe blew up in my face, but I really think I'm going to dump Mathews this week.

Tolbert vultures every goal line TD.

The Chargers always seem to be in "catch-up" mode so Sproles appears to be on the field constantly.

I can't take it anymore. He can't be relied upon. I think a hot WW prospect has better upside than him.

What did you give for him?

He may be borderline cuttable in all leagues. I was offered Hillis for Matthews a few weeks ago. I called the guy back on Saturday and asked if he still wanted to do that deal? This is what I heard on the other end of the phone... :lmao: :scared: :lmao:

what kind of WR would u take for him?
Not necessarily targeting a WR. I happen to be pretty solid at WR. Maybe more of a package deal to upgrade RB, who knows. Anyway, I'm more commenting on the general state of mind of matthews owners...

I traded him right before the HAS injury straight up for fitz and couldnt be happier I got off the hype train early.

Even before the injury the attempts distribution didnt seem right. I knew I shouldve taken mendy with one of my first two picks but hate the steelers so i went with DWILL and mathews...

:)

After this week I should be 3-4 and still in the hunt for the playoffs. With mathews on my squad probably wouldnt have any wins

I don't know what to make of him anymore. He seems like a guy who needs to get the ball a fair amount to really get in a rhythm and then break off a long run, but Norv doesn't really give him that opportunity. Norv has alluded to him not "getting it" or having issues with certain things in practice. He's been vague, but maybe there are attitude problems and/or laziness. Who knows? The Chargers gave up a lot to get Mathews and it seems to me that they need to find out what they have in him, for better or worse. So you'd think they'd start giving him more carries at some point, but as to whether that's happen, it's anyone's guess at this point. The Chargers are putting themselves in a position where they essentially have to run the table to make the playoffs, and if they think Mathews is too raw or erratic to be relied upon, he probably won't see the field much. However, if they find themselves truly out of it at some point, I think you'll see him more.

Ryan Matthews killed my FBGuys subscriber contest team yesterday due to some other byes and events. I am really hating on this guy right now and myself, because I bought into the hype in August. The 4 way rotation in SD (Tolber, Hester, Sproles and Matthews), which has been in place a few years now, apparently is not dissolving anytime soon.Argh Rookies ! :goodposting:

Chargers lacking confidence in Ryan Mathews? Oct

25

10/25/2010 8:00:56 PM | More

According to Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune with the Chargers trailing early, rookie running back Ryan Mathews had fewer carries.

In Norv Turner’s estimation, Mathews isn’t ready for crunch time, and Darren Sproles is.

That’s why Mathews watched from the sideline the entire second half, finishing with the eight carries for 15 yards he had at halftime. Sproles, meanwhile, caught six passes for 53 yards in the game’s final six minutes.

“Please,” Turner said. “Darren has been playing that position for four years, and he knows exactly what he’s doing in protection. He knows exactly what he’s doing with the route. Obviously, when we get into those situations, it takes away the chances to use (Mathews) as a player.”

Mathews made his second straight start and third of the season, yet carried fewer times and for fewer yards than in any game he has been healthy. Mathews carried five times for 26 yards before leaving the season’s second game with an ankle sprain and did not play the following week.
