Is there a fair way to do this? (1 Viewer)

I had a 10 team league last year because 2 guys couldn't make the Auction, this year they are coming back which is great.

We have 2 keepers each year, and I am trying to figure out a way for both owners to acquire 2 players to keep. Problem is, I just don't see a way to do this without them grabbing some really good guys at really good deals which no way would be fair to the rest of the league.

Help???

really depends on whether the guys in your league are Aholes or not.....if they want to have a good league and want the two guys back then

1) each of the ten teams announces their first keeper

2) two teams without pick ONE player from any not a keeper from the ten teams

3) each of the ten teams gets to name their second keeper

4) each of the returning teams must pick a player to keep from the remaining players

Had a similar situation in a league. (expanded from 10 to 12 teams, but we keep 4) we allowed both new owners to choose their "keepers" after the rest of the league chose theirs. Yes, they will each get 2 good guys, but isn't that the goal to keep the league competitive? In theory, the top 24 players will not be available when the draft starts.

Maybe you can have the existing 10 owners protect 4 or 5 players

After they have protected those players have the 2 new guys pick their keepers from the unprotected player pool

After that is done then the existing owners have to get back down to 2 keepers

Draft

Is it a league of friends? If so, it should be easy to do. Since each team can keep 2 players, the easiest way would be to give each of them two picks before the start of the draft. Everyone would have to understand that it would be no different to the rest than if the teams existed the year before, and the same number of players would have been "kept". Then the question is where do they draft? If you're using an auction again, this doesn't matter, so you're all set. It really can be as simple as that. If the keepers count toward your auction cap (don't do any auctions), the same price should apply as it would've cost last year's owner to keep. If your keepers don't cost anything, then they shouldn't cost anything for the two guys coming back.

This is the way that would make sense to me.

Crappy situation imo, if I was one of the people already in the league I wouldnt be pleased with any of the possible outcomes.

Imo everyone should be allowed to keep 2 players then on top of that choose a player from their roster that cant be kept by the two remaining guys.

So say you have Vick, Roddy, MJD and Mcfadden. You keep Roddy and MJD, then lock up Vick, making Mcfadden a legit keeper and vick goes back into the player pool for the draft.

Good suggestions in here. Thanks.

I

i'm seriously considering a couple of these.

Leaning to everyone keeping their 2, protecting 2 more, letting the 2 guys pick from the rest at the price from last year, plus the keeper premium, just like normal, then tossing the extra protected 2 from each team back into the Auction.

Thanks!

We had the same thing happen to our league last year. We only have 1 keeper. We let the 10 teams "protect" 4 players from their 24 player roster and made all others available to the two new teams. It worked great and nobody had any problems with it.

IMO, as a Commish I would set some kind of standard so I wouldn't have to keep dealing with sensitive issues like this. Friends or not, I would let the 10 teams select their 2 keepers and let the 2 guys who decided to come back have first pick at what's available afterwards, especially if this is a money league.

If they want to be competitive they shouldn't leave the league.

there are all sorts of reasons a person wouldn't make it to the auction. Simplest solution is often the best, IMO that's to have the 10 teams select their two keepers and the returning two then select their keepers from the leftovers.

We expanded our 10-player league to a 12-player league several years ago. It's a keep-5 auction league, so a little different, but we did was allow each of our original teams to select three of their keepers right off the bat. The expansion teams then took turns "drafting" any of the remaining keepers from those teams. Once a player was taken from a team, that team's owner was allowed to name their other two keepers and no other players from that team could be selected. We also lowered the cap given to these two expansion teams the first year, though that's obviously not an option for your league.

In your situation, and assuming the reasons for missing last year were legit, I'd go with either a "supplemental draft" for their two keepers, both of which count as 1st-rounders, or else just letting the teams pick keepers from the existing teams after they've selected their two keepers. I don't buy the arguement that you need to "protect" players that they can't keep beyond the ones already selected, however. Yes, they might get a few deals that way, but they won't be getting the best keepers since those will have already been selected.
