It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia (1 Viewer)

Surprised by the reactions to last night.

I liked it, thought it was funnier than last weeks episode and had less product placement. I was expecting rave reviews.
If you stick around here long enough, you quickly learn that stinkbombing anything popular becomes the "it" thing to do. I mean, Stubs doesn't even post here anymore because some of these guys who've never said one funny thing in their life suddenly became experts on what funny is. Every one of the posts he's made over the last year or so (which come much less frequently these days) gets met with "Seems forced" or "I didn't laugh once" or "Overrated". It was inevitable that Sunny gets treated the same. It's still the funniest show on television, and it's not even remotely close. Some of you need to remove the stick, and just enjoy it.

Or maybe some of us just thought the last two episodes were sub-par. This is coming from a guy who is in the minority in thinking season 5 was easily the funniest season to date.

In Season 5, Frank really came into his own as a chracter.

previous seasons have started slow, so hopefully it will pick up and the "storylines" can add some depth and subtext to the funny.

Last season didn't, which is why I'm down on this one thus far. Season 5 started with "The Gang Exploits the Mortgage Crisis" and "The Gang Hits the Road" which are probably both in my top 5 or 10 favorite episodes ever.

Last nights' episode wasn't very good either. I think the "ponderosa" storyline was necessary to start the season, but those two just aren't funny.

Or some of us have been on board this train since day 1, own all the dvd's, even the Christmas special :bag: and just didn't really like this episode. This is the only show I must watch live. Yes the show is still great but last nights was not great. I'll rewatch it again like I always do to see if my mood changed or whatever but I was not feeling it. I'm curious if Savage directed last nights, he had SOME great epsiodes but some weak ones imo.

I appreciated the lack of product placement.I did not, however, think the episode was fantastic.
I tried really hard to see the product placement in this episode and was certain that you'd be upset at them "jamming BMW down our throats". I guess when you look for it you see it, but that's all I noticed really.

I noticed some coors light stuff on the bar. I have a hard time caring about stuff like that though.

No way.. in episode one it was sick how much they were showing coors light and subway.this episode had a little coors, but in a way that felt like a normal bar that served coors.Sure they made sure to let you know the car was a BMW, but again, it wasn't in an overbearing, gross way.The type of product placement that was on last night was acceptable and non-intrusive... episode one was an example of how product placement ruins shows.

Does your wife force you to watch this show? Good lord son just don't watch it if that makes you get so worked up.

I bet she does, because as we all know, women are evil. Wives are horrible and he's an idiot for being married. And all that money he saves from being cheap is going to be taken by that evil #####.

Someone's coming around!Seriously, if a show makes you upset then watch something else.

I think some of the meh feelings MAY have to do with the fact that Marder/Rosell/Day/McIlhenney/Howerton had no writing credits for either episode, IIRC.

Are they getting complacent or starting to pick up side projects now? I know i saw Charlie in a movie trailer recently.

no, i generally enjoy it on my own just fine. excess product placement, for reasons unknown strikes a chord with me.. in a bad way
So first season you've watched this show? This isn't the first nor the last time they've done this.
i watched season 1, then I watched most of last season... and i've watched various episodes in between.I got drawn in again last season because it's on right before "the league"So i guess i'm not a 'hard core' fan... but most of my favorite episodes were the early ones like when they had the pre-prom party at the bar, and the bar went gay.

The League is mediocre.

At best. The worst episode of Sunny is better than anything The League has ever offered.

I wanted to dislike the league but I think it's pretty funny.

Having said that,

Agree that this was not a strong episode. A little Charlie lawyering could have fixed that.
Agreed, but I am a huge fan of Uncle Jack. He was awesome in his brief appearance earlier in the series.

Objection! Hearsay
Charlie: Look, buddy, I know a lot about the law and various other lawyerings. I'm well-educated, well-versed. I know that situations like this-- real estate-wise-- they're very complex.Attorney: Actually, they're pretty simple. The forms are all standard boilerplate.Charlie: Okay, well, we're all hungry. We're going to get to our hot plates soon enough. All right? But let's talk about the contract.Attorney: Sorry, I forgot. Where did you go to law school again?Charlie: Uh, well, I could ask you that very same question.Attorney: I went to Harvard.Charlie: Ah.Attorney: Mm-hmm, how about you? Where-- yeah?Charlie: I'm pleading the fifth, sir.Attorney: I'd advise that you do that.Charlie: And I'll take that advice into cooperation. All right? Now, let's say you and I go toe- to-toe on bird law and see who comes out the victor.Attorney: You know, I don't think I'm going to do anything, um, close to that, and I can see clearly you know nothing about the law. It seems like you have a tenuous grasp on the English language in general.Charlie: Okay, well, filibuster.Attorney: Do you, do you know what that word means?Charlie: Yep.Attorney: Yeah, what's that mean?Charlie: Run!

I have no doubt Charlie would Jack him up on Bird Law.

It's just that bird law in this country is not governed by reason.

Went back and looked at Glenn Howerton's Twitter. Had some responses to complaints about the product placement. Good points on his part, I thought. Especially the 2nd to last one.

People used to ##### about shows using generic products. We get the RIGHTS to do a scene in Subway and people ##### about that. Ridiculous. 12:23 PM Sep 17th via EchofonWould most folks rather us drink cans of beer that say "BEER" on it on Sunny or get paid by COORS to make a good show that people like. 12:25 PM Sep 17th via Echofon I think it makes the show WORSE to drink generic beer and eat in generic restaurants. It screams fake. 12:26 PM Sep 17th via Echofon As far as us selling out: we sold out the second we decided to do TV show. And now we're FINALLY getting paid to do it. I'm ok with that. 12:29 PM Sep 17th via EchofonSo shut the #### about prod. placement. It's industry standard & it's not up to us anyway. Plus it keeps the show u all like on the air 12:32 PM Sep 17th via EchofonOne last thing. The vast majority of the time shows are begging for the RIGHT to use a product so they don't have to use generic ####. 12:35 PM Sep 17th via Echofon

jesus, that's an angry way to respond to the fans. Though, as I've said, I didn't even notice the product placement and even if I did, I don't think that I'd care.

What's he saying about the fact that his show has sucked for the first two episodes of the season?

Seems to be ignoring it...Only mention was after the 1st episode:
On a lighter note: Yes last nights ep. was pt 1. Pt.2 next week. 4 those confused by the "Un-Sunny-like-ending".

Kinda surprised at all the hate for the 2nd episode. While not their best I enjoyed a fair bit of it. Uncle Jack is money.

Surprised by the reactions to last night.

I liked it, thought it was funnier than last weeks episode and had less product placement. I was expecting rave reviews.

After giving it a re-watch, it was not as bad as I originally stated. Still not a great episode but not one of their worsts as I stated.
