It's Christmas in July - Draft Dominator software available for your desktop (1 Viewer)

There's so much going on behind the scenes in the app. For instance FPts is not just total fantasy points at all. As that would hurt for instance Brady. The calculation gives them some credit for the games they'll miss there too. Where would you guys want to see that calculation? Do you mind that the app is doing that? Would you like the option to turn it off? Or do you just want to know exactly how much credit he's getting? Our opinion is that if you're not doing that there's no way you're making a huge mistake.
If you are going to do this, then shouldn't the rankings be shown in ppg rather than total points?

I understand the logic behind this, but suspect this results in some non-intuitive outcomes. I'm at work and cannot test this, but an example would be if I draft Brady as my only QB and the DD weekly points shows me with any QB points in weeks 1-4. On the other hand, if you have inflated Brady's total points with "credit," would it show proper points projected for weeks 5-17?

Yes, IMO it is necessary to explain the process used for giving "credit" to players beyond their projected fantasy points.

Aside from a known suspension, in what other situations does DD give players "credit?" For example, I know some FBG projections account for less than 16 games based on the theory that on average players miss games. Are projections uniform in this regard, e.g., are all RBs projected to play 14 games, all QBs projected to play 15 games, etc.? Is "credit" applied in these situations? Etc.

The matrix to control points in individual weeks is stored and calculated separately. So if you draft Brady as your first pick and view your projected points for each week, 1-4 will be zeroed still. 5-17 you'll look as strong as the Luck/Brees teams at QB. So those outcomes don't happen.

I don't doubt it's necessary to explain this. The answer I'm trying to get to, is where should we explain it? How about on the player card, if there was a tab there for "analysis" that showed how these things had been calculated? Back to my questions - do you want the option to turn that off? Do you mind the app is doing that?

The "credit" system is entirely linked to projected games played and nothing else. So I would imagine for instance Foster is projected at less than 16 games. He'll be receiving similar credit but for fewer games.

Again, there's a separate data stream that tells us which 4 games Brady will miss. So the schedule matrices match this up. That's where those two situations differ. We know Brady will miss 1-4. But Foster's contributions to the by-week points matrices don't have that input, as we don't know which games he will miss (or even for certain that he will). In that case, the view adapts and for that output, optimistically predicts he'll play all the games. The alternatives there would be to randomly choose some weeks to 0 him, which seems silly, or to reduce his contribution each week, which also wouldn't be accurate. So that seems like the best solution to us right now.

That article is in the app ;-) I've read it in huge detail because I had to strip it of all HTML tags to appease google!

What I'm trying to do as much as possible is listen to what you guys think are problems and turn them into points of action. Please let me know how this sounds...

- Ability to adjust starter VBD and bench VBD separately

- I'm going to have a look at backup QBs in a standard league this morning and see if I can replicate this. If I can, I'll fix it.

I'm not going to try to provide detailed explanations of the algorithm on here; and obviously there isn't some code either that's going if (some set of bench players) { ensureOneGoesForMoreThan$1(); }. So yes that Goff explanation is definitely not enough for you in this situation.

I would love to write an article for the site explaining the DD approach. I'm not sure that's the right thing to do though. I feel like the tool should explain itself sufficiently. So I guess I'd prefer a conversation with you guys on here where you point out (exactly as CalBear has done here) what you feel needs explaining.

With my suggestion above you'd be able to see the baselines for starters and bench. The start VBD and bench VBD numbers are then 100% transparent. It's the player's FPts column less the baselines.

On Cam Newton and studs and duds. A completely blank auction league with the slider in the middle has him at $33. Slider all the way left (ie, not Studs and Duds) has him $23. All the way to the right has him at $46. So if you could PM me your login to the app and the name of the league I can specifically take a look at that league.

So on these algorithm-related points I'm not sure at this stage what the action we can do is. But I'm grateful that I know you guys will continue to discuss it with me!
I like Nate Silver. When he's analyzing a proposition, he explains his reasoning, the source of his data, the model he's building, and the results. I don't agree with all of his methods or conclusions, but because of his transparency, I can be specific about where I agree or disagree with him.

Compare that to ESPN's Total QBR. ESPN has asserted that they have a magic formula which is better than everyone else's to evaluate QB performance. ESPN claims that Carson Palmer was the top-rated QB in 2015 (by a good margin), and that Tyrod Taylor and Alex Smith were better than Aaron Rodgers, Cam Newton, and Tom Brady, Is that a valid claim? Because Total QBR is a magic formula, you can't evaluate it. It's a data point without meaning.

So my answer to you is, yes, it's definitely the right thing to do to write an article explaining the DD approach in detail. That's what I would expect of Footballguys.

In terms of what I'd want, I'd want to be able to manipulate the baselines directly, and to be able to influence the relationship of VBD to price in a transparent way.

I think it's pretty unlikely that QB23 is worth more than $1 in a $100 12-team start-1 league. Frankly, with the difference between QB9 and QB17 being only 22 points, it's hard to see even QB12 being worth much more than $1. Would you really pay $9 for Derek Carr with Matt Ryan, Joe Flacco, Tony Romo and Andy Dalton on the board? That's what the new DD says you should do. Carr is projected to score 12 points more than Flacco. Would someone who took one of the top 12 QBs really pay $8 for Flacco? (Answers: No, and no. Flacco went for $3 in our league last year.)
Doing another release shortly so I took the time to look into this. 12 team, start 1, $100, $1 min bid, the app has Newton at $16. QB12 is Rivers at $3. $1s start at Kirk Cousins (QB14). So from what I can see the Draft Dominator is not saying you do that. But I am sure there's something unique to your league or draft status there. I can look into it more, but I need more details than $100 12-team start-1 league.

We'll get you those features.

From a tech perspective, I feel quite strongly that the app should explain itself. I just know that if we write an article there, you then have to get people to read it. The solution here should be that as you say the app itself is transparent enough.

From some of your past comments it sounds like you are trying to provide two products in one, the $5 app on the appstore for non members and a fully functional no secrets version for the members.  The only way to do this in my mind is to have some sort of internal pay wall in the app that unlocks additional features for the members or for an additional fee for the non-members.

I don't think the split is non members vs members but small screens vs larger ones. We'll discuss this across the whole team, but maybe the solution is to show more explanation/algorithm details in the desktop version only, where the screen space allows for it. If a competitor really wants our secrets $35 isn't exactly a deal breaker.

But you're right in some sense that even then in the desktop version, the challenge is, how do you give the best straight up advice while still having all the detail and configuration options available? I believe you can do both.

Kind of going along the same lines as abbottjamesr is saying, I downloaded the free windows app, but I also have the paid mobile version. I would have liked to use both on draft day and in practice, but since the rankings don't update on the free version, its always out of sync now between both. I get that the "player updates" is for subscribers only, but I wish that the rankings were not part of the "updates". Case in point Arian Foster is rank 277 on the windows app, 142 on the mobile.

If the rankings weren't part of the updates, we'd be giving the app away for free. I think this would get huge pushback from subscribers. I guess if it's good enough you'll part with the $35! We'll continue to work on getting it better and better.

This is no doubt true and I understand the business logic. I would probably do the same, but with one twist. In order to get the FBG rankings in the desktop app you need to subscribe, but also offer the option to just load the ADP rankings from other well known public sites. Because it seems that at some point these rankings need to be refreshed from some source, otherwise players like Foster will always be with team FA and new trial based customers will always see the stale rankings/teams when its late August.

The rankings aren't really that; it's entirely projections powered. I like it as it is. It shows people what the tool can do, but if you want to really use it in August you have to subscribe. By including someone else's projections/rankings in there we're still giving the tool away for free. Just not with our rankings. It's cost us too much to develop to give away for free!!

My Local leagues drafts live from a local restaurant, terrible wifi (must have walls of steel also as cannot get local free tower wifi either). In the past, I bring my laptop and draft via old version DD. For some odd reason, my AT&T Note 4 gets local tower wifi, but I refuse to pay the extra $4.99 for mobile app on top of FBG's yearly subscription. *Since, from my understanding, the new DD on windows needs wifi to draft with the best player options after/prior each pick, I'm SOL  with new DD and must revert to the old DD on laptop.

Really? Because the Classic has been transparent for years and subscription prices were less a few years ago. What was stopping competitors then? Has another drafting tool been created by any competitors in the previous years that rivals the Classic? Due to unraveling its "secrets"?

Besides, you really are saying you don't want to make the new DD transparent enough for loyal users of the Classic (apparently due to some new secret formulaic functions you don't want to divulge (for whatever reason), which ultimately negates the ability of the user to use their own leagues historical ADP data.) So, the Classic will be the one that continues to be used by those of us that need that functionality.

On another note, five bucks gets you an app and updated projections on the mobile. An additional 35 bucks gets you an app and updated projections on desktop.

That just isn't right. All subscribers should be able to download both versions for free. Mobile and desktop. Non-subscribers should pay for mobile and desktop and then get updated projections. Seems silly that as a subscriber I have to pay for a mobile version of something FBG lets me have for free for the desktop.

Please don't bring up the fact that I tested for you this year. That has no bearing on my comments in this post. I am speaking as a long time member and contributor to this site, and as a longtime user of the Classic.

I've been trying to discuss how to make this app transparent - not keeping it opaque - but I'm being drowned out a little which makes it tough to get you guys what I think you want. I think you misread me. I said with regards to DD Classic transparency "If a competitor really wants our secrets $35 isn't exactly a deal breaker". You're totally right that no-one else has come up with an app anywhere near as complicated as either. That's why I'm pretty happy there.

You did test for us this year.  But let me take this opportunity to thank you again for your efforts there, and in past years. The reason I do believe it has bearings here is because I know you had a horrible time setting up a league with the first testing version, and you said here league setting was clunky. If I have misjudged that, please accept my apologies. Have you tried setting up another league in the final version? If so, it's either now working - which is great - or I hope you have some more feedback for us as to why it's clunky in which case, as always, we're all ears.

The mobile version: we have to monetize what we do. Or we don't get to do it full time, and you guys don't get to use it. We could up the price to $40 and include the mobile app. This way we have it now, everyone gets a choice. Our subscriber FAQs are very clear that the mobile Draft Dominator is not included.

We're on the same side here Rodys. We'll carry on working hard at this. The more we can focus on how to improve rather than heading towards arguments, the better the app will be in the future.

That's not true at all. New DD does not require wifi.

Just want to make sure...are there many more things that are planned to be broken out and charged separately from (and in addition to) the subscription fee?

Simon...can the new DD keep me up to date after the draft?

I may have used my DD incorrectly in the past, but this is how I used it and what I really appreciated about it:

Each week, I'd run the update to get the latest projections.

I'd be able to see really quickly, each team, their strengths, how they stack up against me weekly, best starters, etc.

It was really simple to see who is still available on the waiver wire and any needs I may have weeks in advance.

Basically, DD was my one stop shop all season long...I used it for everything really.

Can the new one perform this way for me?

Or do I have to use Lineup Dominator in conjunction with DD?

I really liked the grid format of classic DD...being able to see very quickly the entire NFL's depth chart, SOS, Team Strengths, Weekly Points...all on one screen for quick comparison was very nice.

I realize the standardized answer is to just use the old classic DD...but we all know that's going the way of the dodo...it's not going to be supported as well and you admit it's algorithms are subpar compared to the new DD.

We have a separate inseason solution we're working on now. The Draft Dominator will be best kept to drafts. Really excited to get that one out there but we'll have more details soon - we'll probably start a new thread on for that.

OK cool...I'll keep the faith then.

Is there a way to see the position rank for each player?

Basically, I like being able to quickly tell if we're at RB15 or so in the draft...versus WR11, etc...

I know they're ranked visually in order based on whatever preference we set...but it'd be nice to see a label that updates with RB3, RB4, etc...

We don't have this right now. I can see the need though. We'll add it in to the request list.

Why does it say, "You were viewing a default league...we're switching to one from the cloud"?

I just chose "auto complete draft" and when it's done...it wipes it clean with that prompt above.

Secondly...when the autocomplete draft is going...it switches to the draft board and shows you the picks...but if you have more rounds than will fit in your window, there doesn't appear to be a way to speed up/slow down the draft.  It's buried off screen.

You also cannot stop the autocomplete once it starts...what if you made a wrong setting or changed your mind or whatever...you can't seem to speed it up or get out without closing the app down completely.

Another oddity...

I click, "Drafts" dropdown, then "+ New Draft", when I select the "League" dropdown...I see "My Fantasy League" listed...along with my other leagues.

If I decide to click away and close that box without choosing a league...it makes "My Fantasy League" completely disappear.

It's strange...I go back to Drafts/New Draft/League and it's no longer there.

But if I close the app out...then open it back up..."My Fantasy Leagues" is back in that League dropdown.

Not to mention the insanity I just went through to get the new update.

When I opened the app, it said there was a new update.

It took me to the webpage to download it...within the app.

I clicked the "Windows" icon and nothing...it just sat there.

I got it to start the download at one point but if I closed the app, it would make the download disappear.

So I kept it open the next time and let it do the download...but it never showed any sort of percentage complete or time remaining...I couldn't tell if it was actually downloading and going to run setup.

I eventually just closed the app and went to the page in my browser and downloaded the setup file and ran it.

On the cloud it sounds like you need to fully delete the default league called "Fantasy League" - looks like the app is trying to do it for you. That is the explanation for a lot of the issues here.

Auto complete doesn't take too long and you should only use it when you're a couple rounds in. That's the use case - in which case you'd already know if settings were wrong. It also maxes out the speed so that's probably why you're not seeing the slider there. If you don't see the slider for normal mock picks either, I need a screenshot for that as it works for me here.

For further help on these issues can you email apps@footballguys.com and just mark it FAO Simon. Much easier to help you over that system than in the forums, on issues that are user-specific (and quite detailed!)

On the download, I think you likely caught it as I was uploading the new version. If anyone else sees this let me know.

The only reason I joined this forum was because of the DD. Ive used it as a tool to assist me before and during my drafts. I will never purchase the mobile app as I will never use it unless it has the Lineup Dominator on it for suggestions. I use the DD Classic as it gives me everything I need. Being able to upload my leagues features and lineup from Fleaflicker is very huge! Thank you! I will no longer spend 2+ hours uploading the league roster!

Anyway, THANK YOU SIMON!!! THANK YOU FOR ANSWERING ALL OF THESE QUESTIONS AND CONERNS!

As a business man I'm sure there's a specific reason you're asking for everyone's input but I'm grateful that you are taking the time to listen to the people and improve an already great product.

THANK YOU!

FYI: I have found that sometimes the last few rounds during an auto-pick run, are below the bottom of the visible window (off screen). If it happens again, I will screenshot it. When viewing it on the Draftboard, there is a slider to scroll down to view those rounds that aren't visible when the app is automatically selecting for other teams.

Two items

1) Is there a drop off calculator that the user can modify during a live draft? With the classic version there was a window that showed me the expected # per position that would come off the board after "X" picks (Spots between pick OR Spots to look ahead). I was able to modify the # I expected to come off the board based on historical info from the league.

2) Very minor but is there a way to show EDP by round.# in round rather that just total over all pick? Example: In a 12 team league the 5th pick in the 3rd round is displayed in DD as EDP=29. Can this instead be displayed as 3.05?

1) The app does this itself in the background for the pick pos dropoff strategy. For sure it's another place it could (and will) be more transparent. Modification to that number is possible by customizing the rankings profiles of the other teams. This will also affect the pick prediction, which in turn affects those dropoffs.

2) I had someone ask me this a few weeks back, and in response to this feedback we put the overall pick count on the draft board too. It's more concise than 12.01 to just have a number like 111, and also we wanted the number format to be the same everywhere. I think it's really important that EDP can be compared directly to the rank column, and we wanted to keep that in the integer form. So everything is in integer form - but the draft board has those numbers on too.

I think this is the case if the picks don't all fit on, and in desktop only. It seems that the code that auto-scrolls the page works with the framework's touch scroller but not their desktop scroller. I'll file a bug with them.

Is there a way to set the player pool for "Rookies" only ??

Thanks for bringing "Classic" back. I use my phone to talk to people, my camera to take pictures, and my computer to surf the net, etc...

Absolutely I'm asking because of business reasons! I love my job and want to be able to keep doing it. But we do genuinely want to provide you guys with the best tools we can. We know if we do that, the business side of things tends to take care of itself.

The app does it in the background but the data that it's using to predict the drop off isn't going to be as accurate as my league's historical data. Playing with the rankings profiles on the fly in the draft is not a good method.  It will change VBD values. I don't want VBD or any other metric to change. I simply want to alter EDP.

I asked something similar to this but in regard to mock drafts. I was hoping maybe there was something different in regard to live draft.

This is my #1 request for future versions. Specifically it's extremely valuable for me to either import a custom ADP template or at least be able to change expect positional drop offs on the fly for the next "X" picks. Taking that away is a big functional loss IMO.

No worries. To me it's easier to understand 3.05 on the fly and understand what that player is coming off the board as opposed to 29. With 29 I have to do a little math in my head to be able to understand if he'll be there on my next pick.

The app does it in the background but the data that it's using to predict the drop off isn't going to be as accurate as my league's historical data. Understood. It's not too tough for us to add some kind of list import for next year. We hope that one of the uses of mock drafts is that through that process, you can tinker with the profiles and get them right before the real draft.

On the 3.05 math in the head - see if you can get into the habit of glancing over to the draft board to spot when your next pick is and get the pick's number straight from there. I think one annoyance here is this is way easier to calculate in 10 team leagues than 12 team leagues!

Not quite the same, but check out tier function.  It gives a good visual of how the draft is evolving per position.  I find it to be a very useful feature.

Is there a way to import the VBD Excel Spreadsheet into the new app?

It is much easier to make adjustments to projections in te VBD spreadsheet then import them into the app as you can with DD Classic.  I can't see using the new app without that functionality.

That's not currently possible.

Tried using this in an auction draft.  Thank God it was a slow draft.  I had a couple problems that have already been fixed.  It definitely will take some time to get comfortable.

I would like to add to the request about importing my own projections.  I do my own projections in an excell spreadsheet, which I have linked into the VBD sheet and then import into DD. This way, as I update my projections, they are all automatically updated in a VBD sheet.  I am constantly updating my projections, as often as y'all do.  When I am ready to draft, I just import into DD and off I am with my latest.  This is something I definitely need and will use classic until I can put in my projections easily.

Is there any way to change the projections easily?

Thanks

The more people that mention this, for sure the higher up our list it goes and the more time we'll devote to it. But no, there's no projections solution for this now. But you can move players up and down under the wrench icon above the players list then Edit Players. But I don't think that's what you're looking for.

1) The app does this itself in the background for the pick pos dropoff strategy. For sure it's another place it could (and will) be more transparent. Modification to that number is possible by customizing the rankings profiles of the other teams. This will also affect the pick prediction, which in turn affects those dropoffs.
In autodraft while using a custom profile will it pick for the other teams by "Rank" or "EDP?"

I've been playing with setting to see if I can't dial in a realistic setting to mock draft for my league and when I change the settings I can see the VBD change (which will impact rank) but don't see anything that changes the EDP.

Other teams pick by their profile's Rank. But for the Default AutoDraft profile, they're almost the same (rank just adjusted for pos need).

Is there any place where the # of picks per position is displayed during a draft? The only way I see to know that, for example, Marshall is the #10 WR off the board is to count the yellow players on the draft board. Too much work when on a 60 second clock. I would like to see numbers at a quick glance.

Yes; on the Rosters tab before you hit a team, there's a tab there I think called "By Pos". that gives you a grid with counts per team and totals.

That's right at the top of the list of views I believe would be useful to have always visible somewhere on the screen.

Sorry if these issues have been answered. I didn't read through the whole thread yet.

I am trying to understand the new draft dominator and I have a few issues.

First, the help section doesn't allow you to search at all. You put in an issue or question in the help section and the program doesn't do a thing.

Next, I haven't received one email for when I am trying to export my cheat sheets or anything at all.

Next, where can I adjust the adp?

Next, where can I find what the abbreviations mean? example: VBD bench?

Next, the app no longer gives any suggestions during the drafting. why? the system used to give it's suggested pick or group of players and now I could literally draft 20 wrs in a row and my cheat sheet would say a wr was the best-ranked player on my board.

Next, I am confused about how my updating a player's statistics will do when I download the next update. For example: I lowered L. Bell's stats to incorporate his suspension. how will his statistics look after the next update and you guys change him as well?

Next, why can't I upload a projection of my own? I would simply put in my stats for each player in the Projections app from years past and then upload that into the draft dominator. What happened?

So I added the 8 keepers for my team (4 wr's, 1 QB, 1 RB, 1 LB and 1 DB) totalling $75. With a $300 auction budget...16 team league we start 1 QB, 2 WR, 2 RB/WR, 1 RB/WR/TE, 1 TE, 1 K, 2 DL, 2 LB, 2 DB, 1 Flex IDP, 11 bench...

The WR values went nuts after entering those 8 keepers....were talking from the mid $80's for the top WR's to $150+....this seems quite a bit off and unrealistic...any thoughts on what i can do to make the auction values more realistic?

Thanks

you're using an old version (of the new app!) - download the latest from the same page. What I hope you guys will understand is I can't go round and round in circles answering the same questions - most of these are already answered in this thread.

But the one that isn't is what happens to your LeVeon Bell modification. It's saved as a multiplier to our numbers. So you want to clear that once we've updated him (I think we might have done already)
