It's Harry and David Throw Away Day (1 Viewer)

Marvelous

Every year, my wife's family sends us stuff from Harry and David. We got 3 boxes of pears this year and 1 box of cheesecakes with crushed candy canes on top.

Every year, my wife eats some of the pears and we store it in the garage until it goes bad. Then we throw it out. Mrs. Marvelous is the only person in our family that even likes pears.

Today is the throw it out day.

The cheesecakes were new this year. It was terrible. It was thrown out a few weeks ago.

Do people like Harry and David and I just don't get it? I think it is the most expensive ways to purchase pears. My wife finds much less expensive ways to but fruit throughout the year, let it go bad, and then throw it away. Why have it mailed in?

I used to get one of the towers from them as a gift from a PR firm I used. I thought it must be incredibly expensive for what you got. So much wrapping for such little food! I did like the chocolate covered cherries.

My FIL used to get us baskets for Christmas and my wife told him to stop and just send a gift card. They were horrible, stuff from all over and funky candies and snacks. I don't think we ate more than a couple bites to try stuff the past few years. He gave us a Visa gift card this year, so although it sucked*, we still used it.

* Sidetrack, but that damn card would never let us use the actual amount left. It was $50 to start and you would think telling the waitress to just put $50 on the card would work, nope, she got it to approve $35. Then with $15, a pizza place was able to run $10. Then, I used around $4 at a fast food place and threw the card away. Is that common? I have had Amex gift cards before and of course store gift cards and never had issues like that.

I have a cousin who used to send this stuff every year. Always strikes me as the giver trying to appear classy or whatever, but it comes off as impersonal and wasteful.
