Jags sign Wiggins (1 Viewer)

Silver & Black

Sorry if this is a Honda, but I didn't see it when I quickly scanned page one.

Anyway, Wiggins was a solid receiving option in Minn not too long ago, and I think he can be a nice pick up for the Jags. Thoughts?

Here's the blurb.

Jaguars | Wiggins contract update

Fri, 23 Mar 2007 08:44:38 -0700

Vito Stellino, of the Florida Times-Union, reports the Jacksonville Jaguars agreed to terms with free agent TE Jermaine Wiggins (Vikings) on a one-year deal worth slightly less than $1 million.

I think this is a good move. He is reuninted with Tice. And the price tag is resonable -- especially considering what the Vikes paid (actually overpaid) for Shiancoe (Wiggins' replacement).

;) My take as well.
Yep. Great move by the Jags. They now get some insurance for Greg Wrighster who may not be ready for TC and the start of the season. What this really tells, however, is the evolution of the Jaguars to start using 2-TE sets. Koetter loves these sets and having a surehanded receiver like Wiggins on the roster provides the Jaguars a great safety valve. He very well may have the best hands on the entire team and can block to boot. But really, what this does is give Lefty a viable 3rd down/safety option who will catch the ball but wont burn anyone downfield. This will allow Marcedes Lewis to run those intermediate routes and potentially put up some good numbers. He wont be required to stay in and block all the time. Bump Receptions by all Jaguars RB's down. Bump Yardage up for Marcedes Lewis but catches down.

Good posting 1.

Nice analysis. How comparable do you think that the Lewis-Wiggins combo will be to the Clark-Pollard combo in Indy from a couple of years ago? Despite a fair share of passes going to the TE's there, they seemed to negate each other's chances to be good fantasy TE's and each usually ended up in the teens in TE rankings, with Clark in the low teens and Pollard in the high teens.

I like the analysis, but Im not totally sold on the switch to more 2 TE sets just yet.

Even if Wrightster comes back, these two could work as a rotation to help keep both fresh and healthy. The on-field 2 TE sets could be minimal.

I still like the move because I'm a big Wiggins fan and think he will thrive where he is needed as a receiver. In fact I can't wait til he hurdles someone in a Jags uniform :banned: .

I just want to see more before I buy.

I think Marcedes Lewis and Wiggins cancel each other out. I agree that you can have two top 5 WR's on the same offense, but I don't see that at TE. They may both be top 20, but that doesn't win games for me.

I don't see much of a comparison between the past Indy situation and this one. Wiggins is somewhat of a stopgap signing, great in that he can replace Kyle Brady's blocking to a degree and swing off blocks to make a catch. He's got great hands as mentioned but his role will be limited with all the weapons on offense. Hence, the Jaguars wont script much extra playcalling around him- he will run the plays designed for Brady, but in his case, will actually catch the ball. The Jaguars will also script plays that take away the need for a RB to swing out and catch the ball- rather they will execute short hooks or corners to Wiggins when Byron is in a jam. None of the RB's on the roster have good hands and it showed several times last season- maybe except Jones-DrewI predict that Wiggins is in for a 20-30 catch season for around 250-300ish yards. However, the signing has a more significant impact on Marcedes Lewis. With Safetys now having to cheat to contend with Jacksonville's monster backfield, defenses will be forced to play man coverage on Marcedes Lewis and on the receivers. Lewis will now be freed from running short routes and rather will run primarily intermediate routes- and given his size and speed, will have plenty of opportunities to catch the ball and make a play after. I think he will end up posting a season with a high YAC but not as many catches as needed to become an effective FF #1 TE. I think the Jaguars will use Lewis exclusively in the red-zone and that has to be a bump for his value. Predictions on Lewis: 40-45 catches for 500 yards and 6 TD's. In essence, they don't necessarily cancel each other out but only Marcedes will give you appropriate value in fantasy leagues- and he should rank out about mid-teens. Wiggins retains a role only in PPR leagues. If Wrighster comes back healthy, then bump Marcedes down a bit.EDIT: This may steal some receptions from Jones-Drew for those in PPR leagues, but ensures that Fred Taylor is nothing more than a pure runner.

Just for poops and giggles, here's the 2004 Indy TE stat line (the year, BTW, when Peyton threw 49 TD's):

Code:
Tight Ends+----------------------+----+----------------------+| Name				 |  G |  REC  YARD   AVG  TD |+----------------------+----+----------------------+| Dallas Clark		 | 15 |   25   423  16.9   5 || Ben Hartsock		 | 16 |	4	33   8.2   0 || Marcus Pollard	   | 13 |   29   309  10.7   6 |+----------------------+----+----------------------+
