Kevin Smith gets rush from helping Lions win

Detroit -- Running back Kevin Smith didn't want to talk about the 51 rushing yards he amassed Sunday.
He wasn't bragging about two key first-down runs early in the fourth quarter that helped the Lions to a 37-25 victory over the Redskins at Ford Field.

Smith wanted to talk about the key block he made late in the third quarter that allowed quarterback Matthew Stafford to hit receiver Nate Burleson for a 25-yard gain.
"Let's talk about that block," he said. "I got a good block on that play."
Burleson fumbled after making the catch, but the fact Smith was in the game at all late in the third quarter and late into the fourth quarter is a tribute to how far he has come.
Smith tore his ACL in Baltimore late last year and rehabbed for nine months to get back on the field. He's still rehabbing, actually. He said he probably won't be 100 percent until after the season.
In April, the Lions traded up late in the first round of the NFL draft to get running back Jahvid Best. Smith was the team's starting running back his first two seasons, but Best earned the starting spot out of training camp, and it appeared Smith would get lost in the Lions backfield.
He did.
Smith wasn't on the active roster for the Lions' first three games and he had 11 carries for 53 yards entering Sunday.
But when Best struggled to gain much of anything early on against the Redskins, Lions coach Jim Schwartz called on Smith.
He rejuvenated a stagnant run game with 51 yards on 12 carries, most of it in the second half.
"We kept him in the game as more of staying with the hot hand type of thing," Schwartz said. "Kevin gave us the ability to make some plays."
Smith had those key 12-yard runs that set up a late Calvin Johnson touchdown catch.
Then there's that block.
"His block on Burleson's run didn't figure in the scoring, but it was a heckuva play," Schwartz said. "Kevin and (reserve running back) Maurice (Morris) have found ways to contribute."
Smith said he was "juiced up" before the game, eager to contribute and help the Lions earn their second victory of the season.
"Put it this way; when it comes to running the ball, I love to run the ball," Smith said. "So does every other back. Every back wants the opportunity. I'm just happy to go out there and work with the team. Have an opportunity to be out there in a clutch situation needing a touchdown with no time left. I embrace those types of situations. Being back there was incredible."
Smith's 51 yards rushing was a game-high.
Best continued to struggle as the Lions' featured back. He had 48 yards on 12 carries, although he did add 31 yards on five receptions.
"I know I'm going to at least get in the game but situations came up and I was called and I went in there and did what I had to do," Smith said. "It feels good that I was able to help the team win.
"It was real good for me. It's good confidence going into a tough defense (Jets) next week. It was a decent game. There are still a lot of things I need to work on. A lot of corrections to make, I know that watching film. I'm glad we had a win and I contributed and we'll focus on next week."
