Anyone know his status for this week or if he practiced on Friday and to what extent? i'm assuming he'll be reasonably good to go this week but wondered if anyone might have any solid info?
He was limited all week but he'll play.He is averaging 232 total yards and 3 tds a game on his home turf so I'd probably start him.
And certainly a huge sample size here as well. :football:

It's good that you guys realized I was being facetious because I had no idea that's based on one game...

Is this cause for worry or cause for optimism regarding Best this season:Tue, Oct 5RB Kevin Smith is expected to get more work this week, as the Lions don't think RB Jahvid Best is ready to handle a high volume of carries. They want Smith to work in more, particularly in the first half, so Best is fresh for the finish.(Yahoo! Sports)
As a Best owner, I actually think Kevin Smith helps his cause. I seriously doubt that Best can ever be a workhorse 25+ touch a game player.By working K. Smith in, it will help ease the load on Best. Just my 2 cents.
I agree. Javid is by far the best RB on the team, but he was never meant to be a bell cow RB.
I really don't believe that ANY?ONE is meant to be a bell cow RB in the NFL. The game is just too violent. If any of you played high school ball, you'll remember that the day after Friday night's game, you could barely walk upright. Now this is with 180 lb 17-18 year olds, running 4.9 40 yard dashes. Compare that to the NFL where you have 6'5" 325 defensive linemen running 4.6 40yard dashes. The punishment these guys take is just too much. No RB can handle 30+ touches per game on a consistent basis, unless you're a freak of nature.
well, they are all obv freaks of nature. like top .00001% of aptitude for this stuff.but ya, i tend to agree. its why i lol at when ppl are labeled injury prone or an injury risk. i mean, ofc they are a freakin injury risk. but so is everyone else.

so where is the great prognosticator? paging monkeydamus...
Oh I am still around. How is Best working out for you lately? Out of the top 10 fantasy RBs (as I said he would finish after week 2) and its just week 8? How silly of me to prognosticate!

great call!!! I bet you also predicted Ray Rice and MJD would be 15 and 16th in scoring, behind Best's 14th (non PPR)It's week 8. He was hurt. Relax. The guy has EVERY opportunity to finish top 10, and top 5 if he can get it all together again.

My money is on Best finishing the season ranked above at least one of Rice/MJD/Turner. And absolutely finishing above the likes of Greene/Mathews.And he's been hurt. Prognostication or not, his talent and situation can't be denied. If his health holds up, he might end up being a boom or bust player week to week, but he will certainly end this and future seasons, as a #1 RB. Again, if his health holds up. Is he better from a FF perspective than an NFL perspective? Probably, but I don't think by much. He's a very young rookie with two bad toes. As we have seen with the likes of McFadden now, talent under the proper conditions (health, playing time etc...) will win out. All RB have their share of poor games, especially when they are not at 100%

One of the reasons I predicted him to finish outside the top 10 was injury concerns. So the "he was hurt" bit really doesn't fly with me. How many games did he miss by the way? Another stellar weekend. He needed a little luck to break the 10 point barrier, but he did it.

Yet still outscored Steven Jackson... your point?

My point is he is awesome and worth that 2nd rounder you spent on him. The next Barry Sanders. Don't be so defensive, Rizzler. It's not very becoming.

Where are the Shonn Greene and Ryan Mathews threads where everyone gets sarcastically bashed about drafting them in the 1st round? People missed on a lot of guys this year. All though, still leading rookies in yard from scrimmage I think. Pretty sure he's still on pace to be #1 rookie scorer. Will it be worth a 2nd round pick? Maybe, but go through the first 3 rounds of most any draft. How many guys are falling behind their preseason ranking so far?

How are the early returns on Ray Rice, Jstew, Beanie, Greene, Mathews, Forsett, Michael Turner, Cedric Benson, Moreno, Ronnie Brown, DeAngelo Williams, Felix Jones, Jerome Harrison, Michael Bush, Pierre Thomas...... Do you know how many of the 13 RunningBacks that were ranked ahead of Best in my league in the preseason are now ranked ahead of him in actual fantasy production? FIVE. 8 of 13 runningbacks with ADP's above Best in the preseason are now ranked behind him. Yes, I think he was worth a 2nd rounder if you consider how many points he's actually put on the board. If he throws in 2 big games by the end of the season, and just scores about 7 points in the rest, he should still finish about this high. So that's a bunch of games where you can count on him for 7 to 8, and hopefully by seasons end, 3 or 4 that you could say he won your game for you that week. Seems pretty good from a RB2 in most leagues.

Let's get passed the pissing contest. What happened in the 4th quarter yesterday? I don't even think he saw the field.
:goodposting: He was on track to have a decent game, and have close to 100 total yards. Not sure what happened, but Smith saw the field and took a whole bunch of points from his stat line. Does it have to do with blitz pick up?

He was on the way to a very good game. He had 10 fantasy points already and you got to figure atleast 15 if they didnt sit him which would make it a very nice week. I got to winder if the toes didnt get re-injured. or Blitz pickup ?? becasue he had the burst back yesterday. looked fast again. strange.

If you read the earlier posts in this thread, there were two reasons that he was a "sell high" after week 3.

1. Turf toe does not go away if you play on it and;

2. Kevin Smith was due back.

Most running backs do not play the whole game and are in some sort of a committee. After week 8, Best has 92 rushes for 305 yards (3.3 ypc). This is terrible. If he was not targeted for the dump off passes, he is unstartable. Jahvid Best is only a flex play in ppr leagues.

Now I know all of you in this thread love Best, but he has sustained an injury that has been proven to destroy fantasy stats. Add in Kevin Smith reps and expectations should be tempered.

Let's get passed the pissing contest. What happened in the 4th quarter yesterday? I don't even think he saw the field.
There were two drives where they ran no huddle. Both of them Smith was in to start the drive, so he didn't sub out (they weren't making changes to the lineup at all). Towards the end of the last drive they had, they did have Best in there. Stafford overthrew him on a wheel route up the sideline that would have been a touchdown. Next play was the last TD pass to Calvin. The bigger question is definitely why they didn't trot Best out to begin with on each of those drives. Am guessing it was due to blitz pickup.

According to Schwartz, he wanted to go with the guy who had the hot hand, fwiw. My relief that it wasn't Best aggravating the toe injury is canceled out by the fact that he was basically benched during crunch time! :lmao:

Kevin Smith gets rush from helping Lions win

Tim Twentyman / The Detroit News

Detroit -- Running back Kevin Smith didn't want to talk about the 51 rushing yards he amassed Sunday.

He wasn't bragging about two key first-down runs early in the fourth quarter that helped the Lions to a 37-25 victory over the Redskins at Ford Field.

Smith wanted to talk about the key block he made late in the third quarter that allowed quarterback Matthew Stafford to hit receiver Nate Burleson for a 25-yard gain.

"Let's talk about that block," he said. "I got a good block on that play."

Burleson fumbled after making the catch, but the fact Smith was in the game at all late in the third quarter and late into the fourth quarter is a tribute to how far he has come.

Smith tore his ACL in Baltimore late last year and rehabbed for nine months to get back on the field. He's still rehabbing, actually. He said he probably won't be 100 percent until after the season.

In April, the Lions traded up late in the first round of the NFL draft to get running back Jahvid Best. Smith was the team's starting running back his first two seasons, but Best earned the starting spot out of training camp, and it appeared Smith would get lost in the Lions backfield.

He did.

Smith wasn't on the active roster for the Lions' first three games and he had 11 carries for 53 yards entering Sunday.

But when Best struggled to gain much of anything early on against the Redskins, Lions coach Jim Schwartz called on Smith. He rejuvenated a stagnant run game with 51 yards on 12 carries, most of it in the second half.

"We kept him in the game as more of staying with the hot hand type of thing," Schwartz said. "Kevin gave us the ability to make some plays."

Smith had those key 12-yard runs that set up a late Calvin Johnson touchdown catch.

Then there's that block.

"His block on Burleson's run didn't figure in the scoring, but it was a heckuva play," Schwartz said. "Kevin and (reserve running back) Maurice (Morris) have found ways to contribute."

Smith said he was "juiced up" before the game, eager to contribute and help the Lions earn their second victory of the season.

"Put it this way; when it comes to running the ball, I love to run the ball," Smith said. "So does every other back. Every back wants the opportunity. I'm just happy to go out there and work with the team. Have an opportunity to be out there in a clutch situation needing a touchdown with no time left. I embrace those types of situations. Being back there was incredible."

Smith's 51 yards rushing was a game-high.

Best continued to struggle as the Lions' featured back. He had 48 yards on 12 carries, although he did add 31 yards on five receptions.

"I know I'm going to at least get in the game but situations came up and I was called and I went in there and did what I had to do," Smith said. "It feels good that I was able to help the team win.

"It was real good for me. It's good confidence going into a tough defense (Jets) next week. It was a decent game. There are still a lot of things I need to work on. A lot of corrections to make, I know that watching film. I'm glad we had a win and I contributed and we'll focus on next week."

Your wit is second to none. I spent a 5th round pick on Best for starters. The Jackson reference is because I spent my 2nd round pick on him. I am deep at RB (even have Gore) so Best doesnt even touch the lineup most of the time... Point is, regardless of how bad he sucked yesterday, he still outscored a certified stud like Jackson...You're simply hating for the sake of hating. I never once stated this guy was god, or the best in the league... Simply that he does have the talent and if he gets a few big runs in, the opportunity to be a top 10 and even a top 5 Fantasy scorer.

Why do the Lions insist on running Best up the middle, instead of trying to get him outside? Maybe they can't do it. I don't know.

Also, why can't a Detroit QB seem to hit Best in stride when they do try something to get the ball to him in space? I've seen more bad passes than good ones to Best on screens/swing passes and short stuff over the middle. This has to improve.

You can't doubt that with the way Calvin is playing there is going to be some potential for Best to have good games. Smith is Smith and he can grind out some yards...but he only had 2 more yards than Best on the same amount of carries. Let's not get to excited.

It would be nice to see Best against tired defenses later in the game.

So if Best had a whopping 3 more yards he goes from struggling to rejuvenating a stagnant running game? My GOD that is awful sportswriting!! IIRC Best's final two carries were for 9 and then 0 yards. He averaged 4 ypc and his backup averaged 4.25. A quarter of a yard is the difference between being a star who rejuvenated the running game and being the struggler who held it down.Hopefully the coaches are a little more fair in their film study.

You get kicked off the site for six weeks for being a troll. When your suspension is up you immediately return with the exact same behavior that got you kicked off. You are one "nyah nyah" post away from being reported and kicked off again. How old are you?

So Best "struggled" with 48 yards on 12 carries, but Smith "rejuvenated" the run game with 51 yards on 12 carries? Really?

You're talking to someone who was just suspended for 1 month because he was flaming and trolling in the old Jahvid Best thread. I wouldn't waste your time.
