Good move by the Fins.

I am now wondering how ProFootballTalk will spin this, they had Gholston as the guy, and thought the Jake Long talk was just to lowball Gholston.

That was quick:http://www.profootballtalk.com/category/rumor-mill/

The St. Louis Rams are now free to negotiate with any incoming rookie. Except left tackle Jake Long. Because, according to Jay Glazer of FOXSports.com, Long has agreed to terms with the Miami Dolphins to become the No. 1 overall pick in the draft.

It’s a five-year deal, which might be one of the major concessions that the Dolphins had to make in order to hold down the total money to be paid to Long. Typically, the No. 1 overall pick signs a six-year deal.

Glazer says that Long is already in the building, for a press conference that apparently will start at 1:45 p.m. EDT.

There are many details to be discovered about this one, including whether linebacker/defensive end Vernon Gholston ever had a chance to take less than the amount that was accepted by Long. Since Long and Gholston are represented by the same firm, any efforts to leverage one player against the other likely never materialized — even though it would have been in Gholston’s best interests for a reverse bidding war to occur.

As it now stands, Gholston could slide out of the top five, and he’ll earn far less money than if he’d been the No. 1 overall pick.

For those of you who still don’t realize the extent of the conflict of interest that CAA had on this issue, think of it this way. Gholston’s agent should have been calling the Dolphins every five minutes, pimping his client and suggesting that he’d consider doing something less than Long’s deal in order to be the No. 1 overall pick. In turn, Long’s agent should have then been required to scramble in order to keep the Fins focused on his client.

But since both men are represented by the same agency, it most likely never happened. And, as we suspected, Gholston is the one who has gotten screwed.

Hilarious.

I can't recall that anytime where the first overall has signed that the 2nd pick is also signed before the draft.

Well this shoots a giant hole in the theory that Parcells won't draft OLs in the first round, even though he is on record saying he doesn't like the idea...

:lmao:

Will Shanny take an RB? [/hijack]

I would settle for the information of who the Rams choose to talk to. They have been a big mystery all spring. Dorsey/Long/Gholston?

the money per profootballtalk.com

Adam Schefter of NFL Network reports that tackle Jake Long will receive $30 million guaranteed as part of his five-year, $57 million deal with the Miami Dolphins.Long will get $2 million less in guaranteed money and $4 million less in total money than Raiders quarterback JaMarcus Russell received a year ago, but Long is tied up for one less season. And since different people interpret the term “guaranteed” differently, the only way to compare Long’s deal to Russell’s is to line ‘em up and parse the language. For Parcells, it’s a win because he paid less money. For Long (and his agent), it’s a win because the deal covers one less season. We’d still love to know whether Vernon Gholston had a meaningful chance to take less money than that.

Wow, I think I'd rather cough up 4 mill more, and have the guy for another year.

Can St. Louis begin negotiating now? I thought it was just the #1 team that could do that.
They certainly can.Really, they can talk to guys whenever they want, and probably even discuss contract with them.I am guessing when Long signs his deal, they could even sign someone to a deal, but I doubt they would have that much time. This is good news for the top 5, as the market has become set, and especially the Rams, as they can get a head start, and see how sign-able their guy is.

IS there anything preventing the Rams from signing the no. 2? I know they will want to get a deal done before the draft to avoid the all-too-common rookie holdout. Seems like if they get the right deal with the guy they want they could declare their pick as well. What's to stop this from snowballing well into the first round?

if the Rams take Dorsey...that would mess up alot of boards. If Dorsey goes to Rams, do the Falcons take Matt Ryan?

Is is Saturday yet....good stuff!!!!!

LT LongLG MorminoC SateleRG SmileyRT Carey
Kind of eliminates one of the major excuses for the Dolphin's ineptitude these last few seasons. While depth on the OL might still be a concern, it shouldn't be the standby reason for floundering. Now, about the DL... the secondary.... QB.... :wall:

In theory there is nothing; as long as the agrements are in place. Would make Saturday very anti-climactic though.

except that w/the additional cap space this year, the total package would have been more than Russell's....that 6th yr would have made Long's deal close to $70M, which no owner wants to see

I don't understand your post.

I agree, but then he probably would have been asking for more than that for another season as they were probably wanting more than Russell got.

i dont either but with 4 days to go and the bar set, we could ses something done. I doubt it but it would be fun to see Goodell up there rattling off names since a few players are already signed.

The carbon footprint of the NFL draft is decidedly anti-climate.

Does Beck start the year at QB in Miami? I heard on NFL network after revieviwing the film from last season that Tuna is excited about Beck as a prospect going forward. Anyone know how high they are on Beck?

I think that we'll know more on Sunday. With Long in the fold at OT, they absolutely HAVE to be hoping a guy like Groves drops to them in rd. 2.

Excellent move by the Dolphins :o

I don't believe the Darren McFadden to Saint Louis rumors, but there is a chance they could be true, and if they take him... Gholston may start sliding down, although there is a good chance the Raiders will take him. Or for all we know, the Falcons. He surely won't get past the Patriots though.

Damn, Saturday can't come soon enough...

Theoretical:

1. J. Long

2. Dorsey

3. Ryan

4. C. Long

5. Alberts

...

What if the Jets get to pick between Gholston and McFadden?

Tuna isnt a 1st round quarterback guy. Beck will be the man to get the job done. If he fails they have a capable Backup in McCown. Beck is signed for dirt cheap. Beck has not had a real opportunity. Beck is VERY smart. By the way - a while back Bill Parcells when he was an analyst offered a look into how he operates. He said his 11 Quarterback commandments were : Ignore other opinions Clowns can't run a huddleFat QBs can't avoid the rush Know your job coldKnow your own players Be the same guy every dayThrowing the ball away is a good play Learn to manage the game: clock, clock, clock - Get your team in the endzone Don't panic Don't be a celebrity quarterback Round 2 I expect the Phins to look at defense.

Has Albert really ascended to Top 5 status?
Only if KC takes him; otherwise I think he'll be that guy who goes in the mid 1st round and people wonder, "what happened?" when the reality is that's where he probably slotted in the first place.

If rookies are getting free agent money, why not just use that money on free agents? At least they've proven they can excel at this level. or am I missing something? This is free agent-type money, right?
