Jamaal Charles (1 Viewer)

Otis

He's now third in the league in rushing with just over 1,300 yards on the year. What's most impressive is he's done that on just barely over 200 carries (203 to be exact), for a YPC of 6.4. On over 200 carries, has anyone ever averaged even near that?

He's sort of flown below the radar because he hasn't scored many TDs and therefore hasn't put up absurd fantasy stats. But his performance this year is quietly pretty incredible.

Jamaal Charles, 2010: 203 car., 1303 yards, 6.41 ypc

Jim Brown, 1963: 291 car., 1863 yards, 6.40 ypc

Barry Sanders, 1997: 335 car., 2053 yards, 6.1 ypc

OJ Simpson, 1973: 332 car., 2003 yards, 6.0 ypc

Decent company I guess.

Fixed....not sure why this POS is still mentioned as an NFL player

Charles is also #5 if you change the minimum number of carries from 200 to 190. He's actually #1 and #5 starting at 150 minimum. Very impressive.

I sure feel sick about trading him in the middle of 2009 in my dynasty league for Boldin while Larry Johnson was still their starter.

Was worried about the injuries during the game last week but it looks like it was only cramps.

I'm living and dying with Charles, Hillis and Johnson as my three main guys regardless of their matchups. If Charles was dinged more than just cramps, I would have to consider Torain or Stewart as his replacement. Torain is the guy making me second guess my lineup but I'd rather go down in a flame than to plug and play Torain and watch him leave in the 2nd quarter with a hammy or something.

Even Haley has finally gotten around to praising him:

"He's something else," coach Todd Haley said. "Our guys are trying to get him out; he wasn't leaving. ... You just see him growing up before our eyes."

Big fan of this guy, Jamaal.
Gruden?? Is that you?
LOL! that DOES sound like Gruden.Charles is a pretty impressive guy. He always seems like he could make a big play every time he has it. I traded FOR him his rookie year and gave up nothing..something like a backup QB. But then I traded him AWAY last year right as he took over because I needed a starter and was in a playoff run. I traded him for Moreno and a rookie draft pick. That trade worked for me then and is working for the current owner now so I guess it was a good trade all around but I would definitely rather have Charles going forward. I like Moreno but after last week, he's made me bitter a couple of times in not showing up when I REALLY seem like I need him.

I will. I'll check back and give you an update after this week's games. Figured this was appropriate seeing as how there's a ton of nut hugging going on for Charles.

:football: Sweet lord thank you. I'd have to roll with Mike Williams (TB) as a flex if he wasn't gonig to play, I feel very good about my chances now.

That's a pretty good option to have, especially against the Seahawks.

I was first thinking of how that compared to Bo Jackson but he did not approach 7 yards per carry. Those are some pretty incredible numbers. I did find this little tidbit that seemed to fit this thread.

Beattie Feathers

William Beattie Feathers (August 20, 1909 - March 11, 1979) was an American football running back in the NFL. He played for the Chicago Bears, Brooklyn Dodgers and Green Bay Packers during his seven year career. He is credited as being the first player in NFL history to rush for over 1,000 yards in one season (1934) and remains to this day the NFL single season record holder for yards per carry when he averaged 8.44 yards per attempt that same year. He attended the University of Tennessee. He attended Virginia High School of Bristol, Virginia and led the school to its first state championship as team captain. Feathers later went on to coach football at Appalachian State University and North Carolina State University. He also coached baseball at Wake Forest University.

According to DYAR, Charles is the best running back in football this season. While DVOA has suggested that he's been the best per-play back in the NFL for a fair amount of the season, his performance against the Rams pushed him ahead of Arian Foster as the overall leader in rushing DYAR.

He won't be getting any bonuses for finishing in that spot, but you don't need advanced metrics to realize what a great season he's having. Charles is now averaging 6.4 yards per carry, something that no other back has done with 200 or more carries in a season. Barry Sanders? Eric Dickerson? Adrian Peterson? Charles is doing more on a per-carry basis than any of them ever did. His 36.0 percent DVOA would also rank as the best performance by a back in a single season since 1993, the beginning of the DVOA Era.

And yet, after 2 years of this, we have the following in week 15:

T. Jones: 22 carries for 62 yards (2.8 ypc)

J. Charles: 11 carries for 126 yards (11.5 ypc)

There's something to keeping him fresh. There's something else about putting the ball in the hands of a clearly inferior runner at this point in time by a 2:1 margin. There is no reason whatsoever that Jones should have more carries than Charles. I'm not saying he should be the bellcow or even the clear ball carrier, but even a 55/45 split just makes so much more sense while still keeping him "fresh".

Charles has been a nice low end rb1 / high end rb2 this year. It will continue to be his ceiling as long as Jones is in KC. The talent is there, but this staff won't give him the carries and goal line work to go higher.

This is just lunacy

And Jones went over 1000 yards on the season, too this weekend, no??

A coach's job is NOT to preserve his players. His job is to field the most talented team he possibly can. Unless someone can explain why it's in the team's best interest to average over two yards less per carry, Jones should not be carrying the ball very much at all.

Fixed.Part of winning is keeping your best players playing.

I picked him up off waivers last year and drafted him this year. I wish he would get more of the goal line snaps. When they picked up Jones they said it was to preserve Charles. The guy would take every snap given the chance and probably have 2000 yards this year.

He finished as an rb1 last year and right now he's rb 9 in standard scoring leagues. He is a fine rb1 and is only 15 fantasy points down from from Mcfadden who is currently rb4.

While true, I don't think that's the right way to look at the stats.

RB2 in my big money league.

I haven't had a chance to see the Chiefs too too much this year, but I loved McCluster when I did. That guy is just wow exciting. Suppose Jones is gone after this year-I wouldn't be surprised if Charles and McCluster then share the rock.I know the rest of the world isn't so high on the guy so maybe I just caught some good moments and that's inflating my opinion of him but he looks like a playmaker or difference maker-put the ball in his hands often enough and good things will happen.I'm not insulting Charles it's just McCluster's going to get in somehow.

Sorry, ranked #2 in my league is what I meant by that, not RB2.
