Jamal Lewis Mouths Off (1 Viewer)

Jamal Lewis "runs" at the mouth: Ravens running back Jamal Lewis has ticked off the Browns by telling them he's going to run all over them tomorrow and set the NFL single-game rushing record. According to Browns safety Earl Little, Lewis talked some trash in a phone conversation with one of the Browns' defenders this week and has the entire defense fired up. "One of my teammates has a friend on their team," Little said. "[The Ravens player] called his boy Jamal and put him on a three-way with one of our teammates. He actually told my teammate he was going to run over us and that he was going to break the NFL rushing record." The record is 278 yards, set by Cincinnati's Corey Dillon against Denver in 2000. Little said Lewis also told the Browns' player "that one of the safeties, either me or Robert Griffith, is going to come down in the box and that he's going to run us over. I mean, that's totally disrespectful right there. We're looking forward to playing this guy, point blank." Lewis has room to talk, though. Last season, he rushed for 187 yards in the first meeting against the Browns to tie his career-high, and 100 yards in the second meeting. What's more: Two of his four best career games are against the Browns, 187 yards last season and 170 yards in 2000. He has more carries (90) for more yards (543) against the Browns than any other team in the NFL. He is averaging 135.8 yards per game and 6.0 yards per carry against the Browns. Three of his 12 career 100-yard games are against the Browns. In the first meeting last season, Lewis broke a long run of 75 yards in the third quarter to set a Ravens record. He also set a team mark by averaging 7.5 yards per carry. Last week against the Steelers, Lewis rushed 15 times for 69 yards in a 34-15 loss. The Ravens vow to get him the ball more this week and if they do, the Browns better beware. The Ravens are 17-2 when he carries the ball 20 times or more. However, one of those losses came against the Browns last season in Baltimore.

So do you like this confidence if you're a Lewis owner or are you ticked since the Browns' D will be all riled up?

I think most Lewis owners grimmace a little when reading that. You never want a team geared up to shut your guy down. But, I've got Heap too so if they overplay Lewis then my boy Heap will be wide open all day.

You never want a team geared up to shut your guy down.
Wouldn't the gameplan be to stop Lewis anyway? Who else are they going to focus on? Heap, maybe, but not with Boller throwing.

Jamal owner here.Ya, keeo your mouth shut.I know the Browns are planning for Jamal anyways, but dont give them that extra omph.

I own Lewis and love the fact that he's trashin'. Of course, it could bite him in the ### this week. But I love players who boast. It shows their confidence in themselves and anyone who has played sports knows that self-confidence can really help performance. I look for big things from Jamal this season, maybe not this week now, but for the rest of the year.It reminds me of early in the 2001 season, when another Jamal (Anderson) was coming back from his first blown knee. I read stories how he got into fist fights with players on defence because who was running over them and then letting them know about it. I liked what I read traded for him and after 3 weeks into the 2001 season, Anderson was in the top 3 for fantasy RBs in our league -- then he blew out his knee again. Maybe its just a Jamal thing. Jamal: Jaw 'em all. ??? Hmmm.

Stupid, just stupid. Put Lewis on the bench this week, he has assured himself of a 60 total yard effort without any scores. So it is written, so it shall be.

Michael Jordan used to do that all the time. Sapp does it. many do it. But how many can back it up. I wouldn't be benching Jamal over this but I honestly don't like it.

Jamal always has great, if not good games against Cleveland. And considering how bad the Brown D-Line was against Edge ,(and before I get flammed, I am not saying that Lewis=Edge , but he is a top 12 back) he should get 80yds rushing/30yrds receiving and 2 td.We'll see tomorrow

This breaks my tie on starting him or Dillon. I will start Jamal without even worrying about it now. He won't break the single game record, but he will put up some above solid numbers. Bank on it.

1st quarter he won't get much, but the CLE LBs will wear themselves out trying to prove him wrong. Then he'll go off.

Your number of posts speaks volumes, no way in hell he scores twice and nets 100+ total yards  Did you pay any attention to the Browns shutting down the Colts last week? Cleveland's defense is for real and the Ravens are starting a rookie QB. All the Browns have to do is stop Lewis and they win, Lewis ain't Priest Holmes, he'll suck tomorrow.

Let's see....gonna run over people.....gonna break single game rushing record...mostly have game of his career....and he's mouthing to the other team about all this? When his IQ hits 50....he needs to sell. Not smart :wall:

This was during a telephone conversation with a teammate, not to the press. Its not like he was calling out the Browns in public. I would think this would be a motivation to the OL as well now, to back their boy.

The fact that this got out into the public - from a phone conversation or wherever - is going to give the Browns that much more fire under their ###es to stop him. They have some talent and now they're ticked. I feel a little more confident in a) picking the Browns to win and b) starting TT this week, 'cause the ground game isn't going to be so great for Lewis this week. :wall:

Good point.

Personally, I think at the pro level the whole thing about "Bulletin Board Fodder" is overblown. It may work at the college level...but does anyone really "take the day off" if they're up against a nice and polite player? The Browns defense are going to try hard regardless of what Jamal says or does. This is a non-factor in my book. I've got him starting and I think he'll have a good game, or he won't...whether he shoots off his mouth or doesn't. <====How's THAT for conviction!I think based on his past successes, I'm looking for well over 100 yards and minimum 1 if not 2 or 3 TDs.Sensei

You may be thinking of the Bengals defense... and if that were the case, no one would be worried about Jamal's performance.

"[The Ravens player] called his boy Jamal and put him on a three-way with one of our teammates. "
And this was after the three exchanged 5 minutes of "Whassuuuuuuuup!"Seriously - who talks trash on a 3-way phone call with opponents? You're supposed to talk trash to the female sideline reporter immediately before or during the game. It's a no-lose situation: if you don't come through its chalked up to gametime enthusiasm and dropped. If you do shine, then they play it on SportCenter ad nauseum long after your opponent can get fired up over it. Jamal put himself in a no-win situation here. I think I'll have Warren Sapp speak to him. I'll put in a 3-way call.

This must be a young people's thing. Where I come from, that's just considered poor sportsmanship.

I don't happen to agree with him, but what the f$*@ does his number of posts have to do with anything? Lots of people lurk in here. It doesn't mean they're morons.

it concerns me a little for this week. But, it speaks volumes for his confidence and what he's going to put up for the year.

Exactly. It's not the number of posts, it's number of smileys you use in them.

That stuff worked for the Patriots.

No, its not a young person's thing. Muhammad Ali would mouth off all the time. He became arguably the WORLD'S favorite athlete. Far more people like a mouthy athlete than a guy that is polite, except if that athlete becomes a miserable failure. Always have, always will.

Think about the play action pass to Heap. If you look at this very comprehensively.........Heap could have an awesome day.

Well then, those people are just wrong. And Ali is one of my least favorite athletes for that very reason.

GDB these boards.

Anybody know who many yards Dillon had in the first quarter when he broke the rushing record? Jamal finished with 118 in the first. :o

Not watching the game, but GameCenter on NFL.com just said a 60 yd td was called back for holding. 180 yds rushing already. Almost broke the record in the first half!!!!!!!!By the way, I own Lewis in two of my three leagues. NICE

The 180 yds includes the 60 yds. Looks to me like the holding was enforced at the 12 yd line, must of been a WR blocking downfield. Penalty enforced from the spot of the foul.

~200yds & 1TD at the HALF!!!Travis Henry having a pretty good week as well!Go UNIV of TN BACKS!!

Clearly mouthing off hurt him. He'd be over 250 by now if he didn't fire up that defense!
He is trying to pull a Joe Nameth. If he breaks the record, then we will look back to this game as the game that defined Jamal.
