Jamal Lewis....signed (1 Viewer)

I quit! I had Mike Andersen ruin my year last year as a Tatum Bell owner and now get to relive it in 06. You got to be joking! Cruel one if so!

 the cap number @RB is WAAYYY better than it was last year(Lewis $6M+$3M for Taylor in '05)...they certainly have the money to grab a QB now

I don't know how I feel about this to be honest...What happened to the trip to Denver?

Mike Anderson is still considered a fullback, last I checked.
I disagree. HE could be used as a fullback, but that's not what he was last season. they want someone to come in there in case Jamal performs next year like he did this year.

Wow, strange

After hearing Jamal on Sirius NFL radio a couple of weeks ago, I never wouldve thought this was even a possibility

I'm in the same boat--he sold his house here, and were very little if any talks for the longest timethen, a 2 yr offer hit the table from the team yesterday, which I thought have been enough for him to say 'no way' regardless what a counter might have been--I'm still waiting to hear Aaron Wilsons' take on this, as his job is to follow the team 24/7

Wilson has no details on the contract as yet---Raven deal was increased after AZ signed Edge, knowing Lewis had them in his sites...apparently if RBBC was in the cards, Lewis decided Balt wasn't such a bad option

I'm still scratching my head, given everything that occured

NFL Network's Adam Shefter reports J-Lew signed for three years and close to $25 million. No word yet on signing bonus/guaranteed money.

Is this officially a RBBC again, just replacing Taylor with Anderson?
No. Anderson doesnt change the pace and doesnt have any better hands than Lewis. Although he is probably a better blocker. Anderson is cheaper than Taylor and a lot older. They could involve Anderson as a fullback or for short yardage but he looks mostly like the backup. This doesnt look like RBBC. Lewis is at his best when he gets the ball 25 times and the Ravens are well aware of that.

Woke up this morning upset I traded Mike Anderson for FWP early last season. Now... maybe not so much.
Put an offer out to trade Anderson away right after his signing... now that lewis has signed you can guess how that one went...

:wall:

 :o  You've got to be @(&@#(&!! kidding me.

As a ravens fan: :bag: if that's true unless about 20 million of it are non-guaranteed, out year salary that he'll never see.

Interesting development. It sounded as if there was bad blood on both sides but in reality it's probably the best fit for both parties. As a Jamal owner I'm not exactly thrilled by this but I guess it's better than not being signed.

In my mind Anderson is a cheaper backup than Chester and has a similar style to Jamal. A question that comes to my mind is who will get the 3rd down duties that Taylor would traditionally get? MA isn't a 3rd down back and swapped for Bell in most 3rd down situations in Denver.

does this mean Bell is the guy in Denver?
No.
This makes me cry. Probably a good assessment though. Shanahan just does not seem sold on Bell. Frankly I'm a little surprised. I know Bell got off on the wrong foot by shooting off his mouth and then breaking his finger his rookie year, yet at the end of that campaign he shut his moth, ran productively, and even ran through a seperated shoulder to show his toughness.

Last year he had god numbers when oportunity presented itself. Yes yardage variance per carry was a concern with him going negative yardage a few times too often, but he seemed to be going in the right direction. I just don't see why he does not get a chance to be the man before being relegated to 3rd down duty. Still, it seems fairly clear that has indeed happened.

As a Bell owner I'm disappointed. I guess the best thing to do is to sit on him now and wait for opportunity to come around the corner. One thing is certain in the

NFL,backs go down and opportunity comes around, so I wait.

Potentially, Anderson could get some third down looks due to his strong blocking and respectable hands. I think we'll Lewis playing a lot more third downs than he has the past couple years. Lewis can catch, is big enough to block, and isnt slow. Taylor didnt take too many carries away until after Lewis got hurt a couple years ago. Lewis kept Priest Holmes mostly on the bench. The Ravens could also easily add a small back in the draft. Allthough rookies dont often take over on third downs right away.

That is off the charts bad!! WOW!!! I was thinking 3 yrs, 12-14 million. Almost double that? I would think the guaranteed $ is around $6-$7 million, so maybe it's not as bad as it looks

LEWIS CONTRACT REALLY A ONE-YEAR DEAL A league source tells us that the three-year deal to which running back Jamal Lewis has agreed in Baltimore is really a one-year deal, given the presence of a sizeable option bonus due in 2007.As a practical matter, then, it's a one-year, $6 million deal. He gets $5 million to sign and a $1 million base salary for 2006.Absent a monster year, we're told that the team won't be picking up the option for 2007 and 2008.

Lewis is big and strong enough to block, but he has never been much of a blocker - one reason he doesn't play much in third downs or passing situations. MA is a decent blocker so my guess would be that he will have a presence on third down and in short yardage situations - including goal line.

MA will probably be used as a FB, too as he gives Fassell several options.

Different looks from a staid offense will be more than welcome.

If true, I wonder if this really rules out the Ravens taking a back on the first day of the draft?

Well then, the last time you checked must have been the 2003 season... because that was the last time Mike Anderson was a fullback.
does this mean Bell is the guy in Denver?
No.Please see numerous other threads on this.
Alas, I was beaten to the punch.I wouldn't jump off of a bridge just yet if I owned Anderson in a dynasty league. His value is definitely drastically reduced, but if Jamal Lewis continues to suck as much as he sucked last year, I think the door is open for Anderson to win the start. I don't know, I don't know how Baltimore's front office works, if they're one of those teams that start the best players, or if they're one of those teams that start the players they pay the most. Judging from the results of the Taylor/Lewis combo last season, and the fact that Lewis kept starting, I suppose they're more likely the latter. In that case, Mike Anderson owners, go ahead and feel free to jump off of a bridge after all.

The impression that I got last season was that Shanahan really likes Bell, and thinks he's a huge weapon, but didn't believe that Bell was capable of handling the load (and from all evidence that was available, Bell *wasn't* capable. His ypc dropped through the floor after a ton of carries). I also feel like Bell *was* given every chance to become "the man", he just kept wearing down later in games. Then again, I also heard rumors earlier this offseason that Denver was possibly shopping Bell, so that sort of shoots holes in my "Shanahan really likes Bell" theory.

yr 2 has a $5M bonus and $5M salary, which allows the parties to rework the deal IF Jamal is healthythe effect is:

1--playing '06 for the franchise tag $$$, w/o being tagged...remember, there is no bonus w/a tag, the player gets the money spread over the season in the form of a paycheck Sept-Jan

this way, the $5M bonus is banked by Lewis now, and he can concentrate on getting into playing shape

2--allows the team to see Lewis go for a year after the injury, which is usually what it takes for some of the nagging injuries...if he returns somewhat to form, a rework of the back end of the deal is likely...the $5M bonus in yr 2 wouldn't be a problem, salaries for yrs '07-09 or 10 would likely be reworked to a more friendly cap number

the Ravens did not want to sign Lewis long term, w/o knowing his health

this deal allows them to pay him franchise money w/o turning him bitter over being tagged---remember, most tagged players sit out of camp so as not to get hurt and Lewis will need the full traning camp experience this year
