Jamal Lewis.... (1 Viewer)

I'm a Jamal owner and Steeler fan and I think it would be the perfect match. Haynes/Parker don't have near the talent that Jamal does. He would run for the most yards in the NFL in that offense.
Didn't staley teach you anything? Overpaying for a used up, over-hyped, injury prone back with off field issues who admitted to quitting on this season is NOT what pitt needs to do.
Comparing Staley to Jamal is a joke. Staley was never an elite RB. I certainly wouldn't break the bank if I were the Steelers but if they get him cheap he has a tremendous upside. His off field issues date back to before the draft and his 1st year in the league and he seems to have grown up since then. With regard to quiting it seems as if he was promised something by the Ravens (a contract extension) and when it appeared that they quit/renegged on him he quit on them. I don't necessarily agree with it but the guy has real talent.
So if he doesn't get enough time and has to split with Parker maybe he quits again? How could a reasonable person expect the Ravens to extend the contract of a player who was injurred and comming off jail time? Lets not give him a free pass on this.

Yes, he is better than staley, but he is not as good as his price tag will be. He's not a 200 yard back, he's a 1200 yard 6td back with an additude problem and an injury filled history.

He won't be a Viking. They are looking for a WCO type RB and Lewis is pretty much the opposite of that.
Actually the Vikings are one of the most probable teams. They have lots of cap space and are looking to make a major play for one of the best free agent backs available. Lewis's receiving skills are also underrated. If Alexander doesnt hit the market, Lewis might be their guy.Jacksonville is another very strong contender for Lewis.

Jamal Lewis = BORDELINE top 10 back who wants paid like an elite back

Don't believe me?

Let's look at his history, this is just a real quick look at how often he rankes in the top 10 for a season in rushing yards, rushing tds, total yards from scrimage, and total tds:

Code:
20007th in rushing yardsoutside the top 10 in yards from scrimage rushing tds and total tds2001sat out the season2002 7th in rushing yards7th in yards from scrimageoutside the top 10 in rushing tds and total tds20031st in rushing yards3rd in rushintg tds2nd in yards fro scrimage6th in total tds2004outside the top 10 in all categories2005outside the top 10 in all categories
SO, for his first three years he was about 7th or 8th RB in a couple of categories (except for the year he missed). Then is is great year, he WAS elite that year and no one can take that away from him. since then he has fallen off the map, he has not played a 16 game season, his numbers have been poor, AND OVERALL HE HAS BEEN AN AVERAGE BACK.

Ravens | Team not likely to franchise J. Lewis

Tue, 21 Feb 2006 19:21:52 -0800

Adam Schefter, of the NFL Network, reports the Baltimore Ravens are not likely to slap the franchise tag on RB Jamal Lewis. Ravens general manager and executive Ozzie Newsome believes any player who doesn't want a franchise tag shouldn't get one, and Lewis has made it clear he would prefer not to be tagged. The supply and demand of running backs will be on the supply side which works to the Ravens' advantage. Also, the Ravens own the 13th overall pick in a draft that is expected to have four running backs go in the first round, and Baltimore is expecting RB Musa Smith to be fully healed from a broken leg he suffered two seasons ago.

Just an off the cuff thought.

Last year teams couldn't give RB's away.

Where do you guys see Jamal in 2006.
Lewis and Gore in SFThis will allow them to rid themselves of Barlow and will give Gore a yr or two before he takes over as the featured back.

Tom

A big part of the reason his TDs have been so low is that he has played for a terrible offensive team his whole career. Lewis was a great running back and odds are good that he still has a lot left.

I'm not his doctor. All I know is that he was hurt last year. That Baltimore did consider tagging him but decided not to. That Baltimore has the 13th pick in the draft and might be eyeing a RB they like in order to save money and rebuild this team into a contender.

He has been hurt every year since the 2k year.edited....

OK, that is not entirely fair.

It would be better to say he hurt his ankle in November of 2004 and at the end of 2005 is still claiming the ankle as the reason for his performance drop. So the question is, will the ankle ever heal?

Why? Since aquiring Staley, Pitt has gone to the AFC Chamionshup, then won the Superbowl.

His #'s have been average the past couple years but he does not have average talent. Just looking at a box score doesn't tell the whole story. He happens to play on an awful offense (I believe they were in the bottom 2 in passing the last 2 years) and was counted to single handedly carry the entire offense, with no qb and no wr talent. If you watch Baltimore games it's run Jamal 1st down, run Jamal 2nd down, incomplete/screen 3rd down, punt. There's no imagination, no variation (probably because the QB has been so brutal) and he faces 8-9 in the box EVERY SNAP. The line was absolutely horrible last year and the defense which used to give them turnovers, great field position couldn't get off the field.

If you put him on a team with somewhat of a balanced offense or at least one where a qb can make some plays and he didn't face 9 in the box every down he would dominate. If he has any room to run it takes two plus guys to bring him down. He didn't almost break the single season rushing record by accident, the guy is a tank.

He posted a 2,000-yard season within only 2 years of tearing his ACL. I'd imagine he can overcome this brutal ankle injury that he was forced to play through in the Ravens' losing season.I'm hearing reports from Steelers fans that there was an article in the PG recently saying that Lewis wants to play for Pittsburgh. :(

I'm not saying the Steelers are a bad organization, but Staley was a waste of their money

From the PG:

The Steelers aren't likely to make much of an attempt to sign anyone else's free agents, at least not any big ones such as Baltimore running back Jamal Lewis, who yesterday expressed a desire to sign with the Steelers after he becomes a free agent March 3 ("Bill Cowher has always complimented me whenever we played them," Lewis told the Baltimore Sun.)

As a Bengals fan, I can assure you that this is definitely the LAST thing I want to happen this off-season.

When I watch Baltmiore games I see jamal running slow, not putting forth any effort, and needing a breather on the sidelines after any gain of 5 yards or more, which luckily aren't that often anymoreHey, maybe he'll come back from the 2004 ankle injury and be great. Maybe he'll prove me wrong. But if you look at his career there's no evidence that he is anything more than a average to good back that hit the jackpot one year.

Chester Taylor plays in the same offense with the same "horrible" line and he looked a lot better then Lewis every time I saw them play.

But hey, at least Lewis has a good additude and he is a team player...

On Staley (from Bettis)

Bettis, acknowledging the Steelers will have salary cap issues, said he does not believe they have enough depth to lose a lot of their free-agent starters. One spot he said can be filled capably is his own. Duce Staley, Bettis said, can become the backup to Willie Parker. Staley had knee surgery in August and dressed for only five games in the regular season.

"No question about it, he can still play," Bettis said. "He was put in a very, very difficult position this year. I will tell you, personally, how he responded."

Bettis said that Staley went to coach Bill Cowher during the season, after he was fully recovered from his knee surgery, and told him he was 100 percent but "if there is a question of who plays, I want Jerome to play because he's in his last year."

Bettis called Staley's action "a very, very unselfish approach."

"I believe he has a lot left in his tank," Bettis said. "He didn't have an opportunity to prove he could get it done. If he stays with the Pittsburgh Steelers, I think he'll be very, very valuable."

Lewis has listed the Cardinals, Packers, Steelers, and Patriots as the four teams he's interested in playing for.

Between character issues, Corey Dillon, and New England's track record of not splurging on big name free agents, I'd be amazed if he ended up a Patriot.

Cmon , the guy is still young .

Last year was bad cause .

A) Jail time , he did not come to camp in shape .

B) Injuries ( all season )

C) they did not use him right , he needs to carry the ball 25 times a game and then he will break a few.

He is still one of the best in the business when healthy , and he will be next season.
I just haven't seen many bruiser type backs change teams and do well. Could you compare his circumstance to somebody else's career.
Didn't Jerome Bettis switch up teams midway through his career? He's almost the epitome of a bruising back, and he did just fine in Pitt.
796 - Carries Bettis had in Los Angeles1,508 - Carries Lewis had in Baltimore

Total Carrier carries

2,865 - Eddie George

3,479 - Jerome Bettis

I also think Bettis was a far more 'shiftier player' than people give him credit for. Do you have a second example to show Bettis is not the exception?
Stephen DavisETA: He's been mentioned a couple of times already.
