Does he have a couple of good years left or no. Thinking about looking into a trade for him and not really sure what is going price (NOT an Assistant Forum ?) How many good year left do we all see Jamal having and what are your expectations this year. Baltimore seems to think he's the man. Mike Anderson doesn't scare me at all personally.

Ravens HC Billick Names RB Lewis Starter For 2006

Jamison Hensley, Baltimore Sun - [Full Article]

Baltimore Ravens head coach Brian Billick said on Monday that running back Jamal Lewis would be the starting running back heading into the 2006 season, but that he wants to be more cautious about not over-working Lewis via too many rushing attempts. We don't want to put Jamal out there on a 350 to 380-carry year," Billick said. "That's not in his best interest. I think Jamal recognizes that. Every back wants the ball but by year's end, it's 'Oh, I wish I didn't have this many.' Mike (Anderson) gives us the opportunity to roll him in because he does the same things Jamal does for us."

Lewis averaged 7.9 ppg last year (ranking 32nd) and 12.4 ppg in 2004 (ranking 16th).

Factoring in injuries, Anderson, and potential suspension issues, Lewis equals fairly high risk.

Even if you are not afraid of Anderson, he should still take away some carries from Lewis.

I could probably come up with at least 20 RB I'd want more than Lewis.

Bottom line, IMO Lewis is a bottom tier RB2 at this point, so I would not trade a ton to acquire.

IMO, he's in the same category as Ahman Green this year. Both have done well in the past, but how each individual owner assesses their chances this year will be very different.

I'm not buying the hype this year. Too many injuries, too many other options at RB to go with. Let someone else worry about JL. Get MA on the cheap and wait for JL to fail one way or another.

I agree with alot of this I do however think the line in Balt. is much better than Green Bay. I wouldn't be opposed to putting him around 20 with some upside, he's be my #3 rb.

As things stand right now, there's a lot of risk with most of the first round backs, too. Here's how the first three rounds of running backs played out in the predraft survivor league that's going on right now:

1.01 Twilight - LaDainian Tomlinson, RB1, SD

1.02 rzrback77 - Larry Johnson, RB2, KC

1.03 Frank Black - Shaun Alexander, RB3, SEA

1.04 Jeff Pasquino - Clinton Portis, RB4, WAS

1.05 BassNBrew - Edgerrin James, RB5, ARI

1.06 David Yudkin - Tiki Barber, RB6, NYG

1.07 bostonfred - Steven Jackson, RB7, STL

1.08 Aaron Rudnicki - Lamont Jordan, RB8, OAK

1.09 Construxboy - Carnell Williams, RB9, TB

1.10 Fiddles - Brian Westbrook, RB10, PHI

1.11 LHUCKS - Willis McGahee, RB11, BUF

1.12 radballs - Ronnie Brown, RB12, MIA

1.13 bicycle seat sniffer - Rudi Johnson, RB13, CIN

1.15 Duke1948 - Kevin Jones, RB14, DET

2.01 Team Legacy - Deuce McAllister, RB15, NO

2.03 EBF - DeShaun Foster, RB16, CAR

2.04 bicycle seat sniffer - Julius Jones, RB17, DAL

2.06 LHUCKS - Warrick Dunn, RB18, ATL

2.07 Fiddles - Willie Parker, RB19, PIT

2.09 Aaron Rudnicki - Thomas Jones, RB20, CHI

2.11 David Yudkin - Chester Taylor, RB21, MIN

2.13 Jeff Pasquino - Reuben Droughns, RB22, CLE

3.02 rzrback77 - Domanick Davis, RB23, HOU

3.03 Frank Black - Corey Dillon, RB24, NE

3.07 bostonfred - Jamal Lewis, RB25, BAL

3.09 Construxboy - Reggie Bush, RB26, Rookie

3.10 Fiddles - LenDale White, RB27, Rookie

3.15 Duke1948 - DeAngelo Williams, RB28, Rookie

I think he's a huge bargain 39 picks into the draft, compared to Kevin or Julius Jones 15 and 20 picks in, respectively. How comfortable do you feel with Thomas Jones? Corey Dillon? Dom Davis?

This year reminds me of 2004, when the third round backs like Tiki and Martin were way better options than the second round backs who were younger and coming off better years. There's a ton of depth at running back, and I'd rather have Lewis/Owens than, for example, Thomas Jones/Hines Ward.

Keep an eye on Curt Schilling as a clue for how Jamal will do -- Billick said they basically had the same ankle injury and that Jamal wasn't really healthy last year.

I will say that second year back from an injury has always been a huge year for Jamal -- his rookie season was 2 years after an ACL tear at Tennessee, and his 2000 yard season was 2 years after his 2001 preseason injury.

Now he's in his second year back again. I think he will be outstnading value in the third round.

Someone offered me Marcus Robinson for Lewis in a dynasty league. While that was one of the worst offers I have ever gotten, it shows that people don't value him much at all. I would steal him if the current owner is low on him or hold him if you can't get good value for him. I think his upside is higher than people are giving him credit for, on average.

I love Jamal this year....for these exact reasons. I see Anderson playing some fullback this year and Jamal getting at least 20 carries a game. Once he gets it rolling, they'll just feed him.

I like Jamal, and am looking forward to getting him cheap this year. Depending on my draft positioning, I would consider going WR in round 2 if I thought I could get Jamal in round 3 and Anderson in round 10.

Is anyone else but me concerned that the Ravens ranked 16th in rushing attempts but only 21st in rushing yards, 27th in YPC, and 30th in rushing TD?

To my knowledge they have not signed anyone to bolster the OL either. And I believe they also had 2 or 3 backups that are free agents.

I think the upside of this statement is before last year the Balt. line was thought of as a top 5 line and they haven't lost anyone since then. Since then they upgraded some offensive positions and Balt. in the past has been a run first team. Last year you had alot go wrong in Balt. There defense was horrible, the starting qb, as bad as he is, was hurt and you had a running back by committee. I'm not saying I'm sold on Jamal being a top ten back (obviously by my post) but I do think he has a lot of upside and is an excellent buy low canidate.

Jamal Lewis is 26 and Ahman Green is 30 and coming off a more serious injury, however. Lewis has had one down year where he struggled with injury and off the field issues pre-season. Lewis has much more potential to return to form than Green.

You are reading into this a lot more than I intended. My point simply was to point out that both Lewis and Green are former Top 5 RB returning from injuries and potentially battling others for carries. Similarly, the range for where to draft either of these guys and their projections are all over the map.

Jamal Lewis may only be 26 years old, but the injuries and number of carries he has had make him "truly" closer to 30. He looked like a shot football player last year; slow to the hole and going down on first contact, not the human wrecking ball we saw for the first several years of his career. I think he may turn out to be a Christian Okoye type: puts up a few monster years, but when he loses it, it's no gradual regression, but rather a sharp, sudden, and unmistakable erosion of skills. I may certainly be wrong but I think his days as a lead back are finished.

I got offered M.MOORE AND S.MOSS for LEWIS AND TAYLOR prior to trade deadline last year. Though S.Moss was attractive to me I already had a heads up that Taylor was as good as signed in Minny for this year thanks to FBG board and didn't really think S,Moss would help me as I already have Fitz,Housmanzehah, Muhummid, and Curtis so I rejected and glad I did!

Jamal had the same injury suffered by Boston pitcher Curt Shilling which takes 18 months to recover from. He got dinged late fall of 2004 so he would be on track to be 100% right about now. Over the last five games of 2005 he had two 100 yard games. In two of the other five games the Rats sat him down and let Chester run to see if he gave them a better chance to win. The rumors of franchising Jamal were real but Billick said they didn't do that because it creates an air of negativity with the player being franchised, see Ray Lewis and others on the Rats who have been tagged in the past. They lost Chester Taylor and then signed 33 yr old Mike Anderson then a few hours later they caved and signed Jamal a few hours before he was due to leave for Denver. Now Billick makes it clear who is the starter next year.

Jamal is, healthy, got paid, has been named starter, and I believe the Rats will upgrade their offensive line which has been in disrepair over the last few years when Jam was struggling. He's only had one high mileage season two years ago. He was working out 12 hrs a day in the big house preparing for last season proving he has the conviction to be great. The legal issue hanging over his head is long over and done with and now he's got his health back and his head on straight with his contract. All of the negative press directed at him is based on off-field issues the struggles last year when he was still working his way back from injury.

I see the problems have been dealt with, I see no threat with Anderson, I see a better supporting cast with expected upgrades on the offensive line and Heap back healthy for the first time in two years, and I see 26 yr old Jamal Lewis prepairing intensely and uber motivated to blow up and prove his critics wrong but that is just my humble opinion. ;)

In one of my dynasty leagues, I was trying to trade for Lewis when he was a FA. I thought he would be in Denver, GB or Pitt. I have no interest in him since he resigned with BALT.
