JaMarcus Russell to Play? (1 Viewer)

Nov 9 Josh McCown will start Oakland's game against Chicago on Sunday, but Raiders coach Lane Kiffin said there's a chance Russell would be the second quarterback, allowing him to use the rookie for a few drives early in the game if he chooses.

Advice: Russell, the first overall pick in last April's draft, hasn't played a single down in the NFL after a lengthy holdout that extended into the regular season. Russell went 25-4 as LSU's starting quarterback, finishing his career with the Tigers by throwing the second most touchdown passes (52) and having the second highest completion percentage (61.9 percent) in school history. In September, he signed a record rookie contract that guarantees him at least $29 million.

__________

Does this guy have any value in any sense? Would he bolster the passing attack? Is he an upgrade over McCown? I would love to hear a homer's opinion on this physically gifted guy.

EDIT: According to the Oak Tribune, he has a slight edge to start this WEEK 11. Might be an opportune time to throw him in - at least passing wise - for his first start.

A Homer has no more clue than anyone. He has not played one snap of pre-season or NFL football. Anyone with the Sunday Ticket can judge for themselves.

Here's a little longer piece on it. The main problem with putting him in is that he missed TC and preseason, didn't sign until after wwek 1. Not only hasn't he gotten any game experience, but his practice experience is lacking as well. Practically no reps with the first team all season long. Pretty hard to learn a system when you're running the scout team all year. Obviously Kiffin can judge better than anyone else if JR is ready to play, but then again Kiffin has no experience with a rookie QB's entrance into the NFL.

I think getting him some reps at some point this year is wise. It doesn't have to be a ton of them, and they can come at meaningless points in a game, but he needs some real NFL game experience. He's been in their system long enough that he should have a decent feel for the offense. I'm sure he'll struggle some off the bat, but it will be a great experience for him. I'm interested in seeing what he can do. (I have him in two dynasty leagues.)

As a die hard fan, I think moving him to #2 is a good idea. Let the rook take some snaps.

It would be different if I felt that the other options would benefit the team by Kiffin committing to one or the other, or even using them consistently in tandem.

Bottom line is that this team can neither win nor gain any consistency on offence with either McCown or Culpepper at the helm. Might as well give Russell some experience and work on some fundamentals with the first team in practice, then throw him in occasionally to get some real-time experience.

They picked Russell to be the future of the franchise. Might as well start that grooming now.

OAK Homer here. today's sf chronicle states that culpepper will "be #2 for the game quelling rumors that russell will see playing time." paraphrasing here and don't have a link. but i am reporting what i read this morning.

Josh McCown-QB- Raiders Nov. 15 - 5:32 pm et

Josh McCown (thigh) went through some part of Raiders practice Thursday.

"(Josh) didn't do everything because he's not starting, but I think he could have done everything if he had to," coach Lane Kiffin said. The big story in Oakland right now is whether McCown or JaMarcus Russell will serve as Daunte Culpepper's backup at Minnesota. Russell likely has a slight edge.
