Jared Cook - What to expect? (1 Viewer)

New Orleans acquired additional WR options and drafted a highly-regarded rookie TE.

Cook will certainly have week-winning games in this offense, but it will be impossible to predict when they will be.  He's a Best Ball TE only, IMO.
I think it's a lot to expect a 3rd round TE like Trautman to impact the playing time or targets of a seasoned vet like Cook. There's no way to know when he'll even be ready to see the field with a demanding, perfectionist QB like Brees, TE is one of the tougher positions to make the transition to the NFL and Trautman is a small school guy who was a top prospect, but in a weak TE clasa.

You're right that Sanders impacts things, Brees is going to love him.

Jared Cook caught 5-of-7 targets for 80 yards in the Saints' Week 1 win against the Bucs.

Drew Brees time and again checked down to Cook, who was almost always open with the Bucs focusing on Michael Thomas and Alvin Kamara coming out of the backfield. While Cook probably can't keep up his touchdown scoring rate from a year ago, he showed once again this week that he can be a stable fantasy producer in the Saints offense. Cook should remain in fantasy lineups next week against Vegas.

Jared Cook caught 2-of-5 targets for 13 yards and one touchdown in the Saints' Week 2 loss to the Raiders.

Cook was tied for third on the team in targets with three, but his 13 receiving yards were dead last among nine Saints to catch at least one pass. However, Cook caught Drew Brees' lone touchdown of the night, scoring from six yards out in the second quarter. Cook has seen 12 targets through two weeks and will be a back-end TE1 next week at the Packers.

The TD was great to have...but the rest of the night was frustrating as he was basically ignored...was thinking he would see even more targets than week 1 with Thomas out (where it looked like they were really using him well in the pass game)...instead, not much to be seen.

Jared Cook (groin) is not practicing on Wednesday.

Cook left Sunday's game against the Packers and noticeably limped to the locker room. Third-round rookie Adam Trautman likely replaces Cook in the lineup if he cannot suit up against the Lions in Week 4. Cook has only turned 15 targets into 114 yards and a touchdown through three games.

Saints TE Jared Cook (groin) did not practice Thursday.

Yikes. That's two consecutive missed practices for Cook. He's now on the wrong side of iffy for this week's game against the Lions. Rookie Adam Trautman got 52 percent of the Saints' offensive snaps and saw two targets after Cook left last week's game against the Packers. Those with Cook on their roster can do better than Trautman this week if Cook is out.

Jared Cook (groin) got in a "limited" practice on Thursday.

It's a step in the direction for Cook, who did not practice last week before sitting out Sunday's game against the Lions. Cook has an extra day to get healthy for Week 5 with the Saints playing on Monday Night Football. Considering the dire state of affairs at the position, he would immediately slot back into the top eight at tight end.

Jared Cook (groin) was limited in practice Friday.

That's two-straight practices for Cook, who likely gets a "questionable" tag after Saturday's final practice report of the week. When Cook returns, it will likely be alongside Michael Thomas. That pushes Cook down to the TE1/2 border and makes him more touchdown-dependent than he was earlier in the season.

Saints TE Jared Cook (groin) is expected to play Monday night against the Chargers.

Cook was listed as questionable after practicing on a limited basis this week. With Michael Thomas out (disciplinary) for the Saints, Cook could see solid volume against the Bolts. He's seen a total of 12 targets in two full games this season.

Jared Cook (groin) is active for Week 5 against the Chargers Monday night.

After missing last week, Cook got the green light to face L.A. Inactive for the Saints are TE Adam Trautman, OL Ethan Greenidge, DT Malcolm Roach, WR Michael Thomas, WR/KR Deonte Harris, CB Janoris Jenkins, and CB Justin Hardee.

Jared Cook caught 2-of-3 targets for 52 yards and one touchdown in the Saints' Week 5 win over the Chargers.

Cook played through a groin injury but made his minimal looks count by catching a 41-yard touchdown behind three defenders in the fourth quarter. He now has a pair of scores through four games and remains a back-end TE1. The Saints have their bye before facing the Panthers in Week 7.

With the tight end landscape as treacherous as it is, Cook might be available on some wires coming off the bye. I like him to rebound. Not in a huge way, but be a serviceable TE in the 5-10 range weekly.

Yeah I picked up Cook a little bit bc I like him with Brees throwing to him and a little bit of desperation.

Higbee has been a bust and I need to see Fant last a while game before plugging him back in.

Jared Cook caught neither of his two targets in the Saints' Week 10 win over the 49ers.

Michael Thomas' return to the New Orleans lineup has been catastrophic for Cook's fantasy usefulness; he has just two catches for 30 yards over the past two weeks. To be fair to Cook, no one besides Alvin Kamara is producing in the Saints' offense right now. Cook has a Week 11 date with a Falcons defense that's given up the most tight end receptions this season. Fantasy players aren't going to find a superior option on the waiver wire.

Jared Cook caught neither of his two targets in the Saints' Week 12 win against the Broncos.

Cook's fantasy usefulness has been torpedoed in the Taysom Hill-led Saints offense. Cook has one reception on three targets in Hill's two starts for New Orleans. Fantasy players should look elsewhere for viable tight end options in Week 13, when the Saints take on the Falcons. Cook has no floor -- and certainly no ceiling -- for as long as Hill is the team's starter.

Quiet here...

With Brees back wonder if Cook is a sneaky play this week.

You don't beat KC throwing to the wideouts. It's without a doubt going to be back to the Kamara and rushing show, but Cook could eat in the middle in a potential shootout.

Have to think he inches up the rankings a bit with Brees back.

And now M. Thomas is ruled out.

And I was all set starting C. Kmet too.

Hmmm.

Same.  Just put Cook in.
Only fear here is it's the Murray/Hill/Kamara show. I've got to think Payton wants to run the hell out of the ball and keep KC off the field. Could also see a ton of Kamara dump offs.

While KC is tough on WRs, they are pretty lousy against the TE. Gesecki, Gronk and Waller smoked them. Hell...Gesecki had two TDs last week. So, you'd think Cook has to be a pretty important piece to the game plan.

Jared Cook caught 3-of-4 passes for 82 yards in the Saints' Week 16 win over the Vikings.

Cook broke off three chunk gains to help set up Alvin Kamara for an absurd six-touchdown game. The Saints were locked in between the tackles, so Drew Brees only attempting 26 passes in a game New Orleans scored 52 points. Cook needs to find the end zone to be a worthwhile TE2 option. His odds are decent against the Panthers in Week 17 with Michael Thomas and Tre'Quan Smith sidelined.

Jared Cook caught 4-of-7 targets for 40 yards in the Saints' Wild Card win over the Bears.

He had an end-zone shot broken up at the goal line. Cook's seven targets tied Michael Thomas and Deonte Harris for the team lead. Cook and the Saints will draw the Bucs in the Divisional Round. He went 5-80 and 2-30 in two games against Tampa Bay in the regular season.

Jared Cook (back) was limited during Wednesday's practice.

Cook's back issue doesn't seem overly concerning, though DFS players should watch for late-week setbacks for the veteran tight end. Cook, who last week caught four balls for 40 yards in the Saints' Wild Card win, had seven catches for 80 yards in two games against Tampa this season. The Saints play the Bucs in the Divisional Round.

Jared Cook caught 5-of-6 targets for 28 yards in the Saints' Divisional Round loss to the Bucs.

Cook had one to forget, losing a fumble in the open field that led to a Bucs touchdown the other way several plays later, and then he had a Drew Brees pass go through his hands and into the arms of a defensive back for an interception to seal the eventual loss in the fourth quarter. On the year, Cook, 34 in April, caught 37-of-60 targets for 504 yards and seven touchdowns across 15 games. Cook finished the year as the overall TE19 in half-PPR points per game. His best days are well behind him, even if Cook still offers some athleticism. Cook will head to free agency in March.

The Athletic's Katherine Terrell expects the Saints to "move on" from Jared Cook this offseason.

Cook has an $8.04 million roster bonus due on the second day of the new league year, making the move something of a no-brainer for the cap-strapped Saints. Less involved in the offense this season, especially as the year wore on, Cook's 37 receptions were his second fewest since 2010. This, for a team that struggled for healthy pass-catching options. Cutting Cook would create $9.1 million in space for a team that is well north of $100 million over the cap. Cook turns 34 in April.

Saints released TE Jared Cook.

New Orleans also released veteran TE Josh Hill. The Cook move was just a formality, as his contract was set to void anyway with a dummy year on it. The Cook release doesn't create any additional cap room and leaves behind $2 million in dead money. Cook went 37-504-7 across 15 games this past season but really floundered in the playoff loss with an untimely fumble. He turns 34 next month and likely won't be greeted with a robust market, though he still does have some playmaking ability left in him in the right situation.

NBC Sports Edge take:

Chargers signed Jared Cook, formerly of the Saints, to a one-year contract worth up to $6 million.

Donald Parham truthers are inconsolable. Cook will play for his sixth NFL team in 2021, joining an LA offense that recently lost Hunter Henry and his 93 targets. For as much upside as Parham seems to offer the team's offense -- and fantasy managers looking for late-round tight end dart throws -- Cook will be the presumed starter. It was always a long shot that the Bolts wouldn't bring in a veteran to eat up tight end snaps after Henry's departure. Cook will certainly have streaming appeal in a Justin Herbert-led offense. Tight ends saw a 21.4 percent target share in the Chargers' offense last year.

Jared Cook caught 5-of-8 targets for 56 yards in the Chargers' 20-16 Week 1 win over Washington.

The wily veteran is still a fantasy factor despite the cries of Donald Parham truthers. Cook was third on the team in targets and receptions against Washington. He disappeared in the second half after early involvement over the middle of the field. Cook should be a serviceable fantasy tight end this season in a Chargers offense that should be among the league leaders in passing yardage.

Jared Cook caught 6-of-7 targets for 70 yards and one touchdown in the Chargers' Week 4 win over the Raiders.

Cook led the team in receiving and was second to Keenan Allen (11) with his seven targets. The 34-year-old tight end scored from 10 yards out in the second quarter and was his first touchdown of the season. Cook has been a factor in the red zone early in the year and was finally rewarded against his former team. Cook will be a streamable TE1 next week against the Browns.

Looked good last night and it is one of those offenses (Buffalo, KC, AZ) that you seem to want a piece of it somewhere.

Though...I don't expect a ton of nights like last night where LV seemed to try and take away Mike Williams...and Herbert looked to Cook instead.
