Jared Lorenzen Starts Over Sorgi (1 Viewer)

You probably have seen that Jared Lorenzen is starting tonight over Jim Sorgi.

Please lose the fat jokes. What do you think that says about the Colts QB situation? Is Manning so injured they can't risk Sorgi? Has Lorenzen passed Sorgi?

Thoughts?

J

I think it means that they know they are likely starting a backup week 1...and they didn't want to risk dropping any lower on the depth chart.

Sorgi hasn't really shown anything. Lorenzen has some decent NFL experience. I think the real "Manning is doomed for week 1" stories will fly, though, if Gray plays before Sorgi in the 2nd half.

Just read above that Sorgi was dinged, so never mind, I guess.

My first thought when i saw that lorenzen was starting was that sorgi has been so bad maybe they plan on cutting him and they want to see what they have in Jared and Gray.

I think Lorenzen is the 2d best QB on the team, although Gray isn't far off.I will continue to dream of Sorgi's release.

How is Gray not second on the depth chart??? He is the only backup that has seen significant playing time in the regular season and he was fairly successful in those opportunities (filling in for Garrard).

Any Colts fans that can fill us in here?

Hi BR,You think there's a chance that if Manning is out, that Sorgi doesn't start? How dinged up do you think Sorgi is?J

Lorenzen started because Sorgi limped off the bus according to Schefter. Nothing major, but they are protecting their #2 guy (and likely starter Week 1).

Odds are they keep 3 QBs on the active roster, but will that mean Quinn Gray and the Hefty Lefty both make the team?

More from Adam:

Sorgi hurt his knee and got progressively worse as the week wore on, but would have started tonight if the regular season.

Quinn Gray will play all of the 2nd half tonight.

The Sorgi injury is believable, but the Colts aren't obliged to be honest about injuries at this point, and you've got to take it with a grain of salt. The most interesting thing to me was that they started Lorenzen ahead of Quinn Gray. They've both played well in spots with the 2nd and 3rd teamers, and both have looked better than Sorgi looked with the 1st teamers. This is the first strong indicator that Lorenzen has an edge on the #3 job.

We haven't seen Sorgi play in a meaningful game yet, so it's tough to assess his progress, but he hasn't looked good to me, and his backup spot could be taken later this season.

That's exactly what that tells me, that they can't risk Sorgi to injury in a silly preseason game. The Colts are thinking home field advantage, even now as there is no wiggle room when you're competing against the New England Patriots. Also, they'd like to give Lorenzen a little work with the starters just in case something did happen to Sorgi in week 1 if indeed Sorgi does start.Lorenzen starting is more of an indication to me that they're planning on Peyton Manning sitting week 1.

Though he is not quite at his playing weight of 285, Lorenzen is a good qb. He is pretty quick and agile for a guy of his size and I think he could be decent in that offense. Not to mention, he is hell on the qb sneak at the goalline.

This is not an Aaron Rodgers/Favre situation... Sorgi is not good and I'm sure the Colts need to identify a true "Plan B" as Manning's poor recovery casts doubt about when he can return.

Hey Joe - There is little chance Sorgi does not start Week 1 if Manning can't go, IMO. Jeff covered the injury rpt (doubt it's anything significant) and the Colts LOVE Sorgi - in spite of himself. I hope they keep all 3 backups but IMO it's unlikely and at this point a coin flip as to whether Lorz. or Gray is the odd man out.

Gray's chances of making the roster took a big hit after his 4 picks tonight against the Bills' 3rd string defense.

Given what I saw tonight, Sorgi is better than Gray and Lorenzen, but if Manning is either totally out or is limited some way with injury, the door is opening for the rest of the AFC central.

Manning will start week 1. He is a tough guy and he does not want to lose that streak, (trust me it means something to him).

What it means is Sorgi was dinged up.... but, more than this... Why risk the backup when the Colts have to cut 5 guys in a few days... and they wont be keeping one of the qb's... Myself I am still baffled by the fact that they brought in both Gray and Lorenzen (especially the latter... geez) and cut Josh Betts (was a practice squad guy who is a very good qb.. Honestly I think he should be Mannings backup). Tonight the way things worked out they saw what they wanted to see from these two and one wont be there too long.

the ATL announcers in preseason were calling him J-LO. Let's make that stick.

I am pretty sure they were saying J-Load. That has been another one of his nicknames through the year.

I believe that they had to rest Sorgi due to a very good chance he'll be used in the regular season. Likely sooner than later. Manning is walking gingerly. Different days, he looks very different in his gait.

Imagine that Harrison comes back fully healthy and ready and it is Manning that is struggling with health issues.

Scary days for us Colts fans.

With the Colts cutting Gray and Lorenzen, we definately know Lorenzen hasn't passed up Sorgi but most importantly with now only 2 active QB's on the Colts team in Manning and Sorgi, that tells me they must be a little heathier than we thought a few weeks ago.

Maybe they read the open letter from Cullie.
