Jason Campbell and the deep ball (1 Viewer)

I have Jason Campbell stashed as a prospect QB and have had high hopes for him to develop into a Roethlisberger type qb. That said, I've seen several of his games this season and his deep ball is absolutely brutal. He's got a cannon and seems to do alright dinking and dunking his way down the field, but I've seen more wide open wr's missed on potential big plays than I can count. Any Redskin homers care to comment on Campbell's progress and whether or not I just happen to see him at his worst or if this is a disturbing trend in his game?

Seriously? I really can't think of too many and I've watched every game.

Campbell's personal progress has been good. He had the worst game of his career against NE, but that wasn't completely shocking. The main problem, IMO, is not with Campbell, but with the OL. The OL is just terrible right now in run blocking. Their ground game isn't going to scare anyone in its current state and that's allowing team's to keep the safeties back and take away the downfield passes. He throws the deep ball well, it just hasn't been open recently.

I think your right on from the games I have watched. He can throw that ball a mile, but just doesnt have the touch needed at this point to be effective. I think in another year or two he will be a very solid QB.

It's somewhere in the middle. The main criticism has been that he throws too flat of a deep ball, and doesn't put enough air under it which allows WR - especially speedy WR's like he has - to run under it and catch it. This makes it harder to complete a pass because if it's not perfectly placed it's either incomplete or intercepted. I think he'll work that out over time because this wasn't a problem last year as I recall.

What's really hurt him this year has been surprisingly poor play on Moss' part, and the revolving door that's been the right side of his o-line. That's a pretty bad combination if you're a QB. The short throws have been a product of the pass protection breakdowns for the most part, though I think they've been a bit more conservative than they needed to be. IMHO Campbell's been trying to be too perfect on the rare deep throws that he's been allowed to make.

This is a compilation of his passing TD's from last year, which included a number of good, and even very good, deep throws (apologies in advance for the high cheese factor in the video). That should reassure you somewhat.

Has he aired many out to Santana Moss? This seems to be Moss' specialty...get 3/4 catches for 40 yards and 1 catch for 60+.
