Jaguars :: WR

WR J.Smith To Retire?

Jay Glazer, FOXSports.com

WR Jimmy Smith, one of the most prolific receivers of the past 10 seasons, has abruptly decided to retire from professional football. FOXSports.com has learned that Smith, has informed Jaguars' HC Jack Del Rio of his intention to call it quits after 12 seasons. The team is expected to hold a press a press conference Today to announce the decision, unless Smith has an 11th-hour change of heart. LINK

It's sad, but the first thing that came to mind was that he probably had another positive test, or knew he would.

Still, based on last year it looked like the guy might have had some game left in him. Sorry to see him go.

How many posts before the possibility of another positive test is mentioned? :bag:

Seriously, that's a big shock and bumps up Wilford, Matt Jones and maybe even Reggie Williams

Wasnt expecting that, the guy had a great career, too bad he couldnt squeeze 1 more year.

I might have to bump Wilford up a notch or 2.

Gotta be a "Snowman" issue in here somewhere ... he was interviewed on NFL.com a couple weeks ago talking about the Jag's prospects for the future and how excited he was about the upcoming season ... guess he got a little too excited maybe ...

A shame to see him go ... alway's Mr Reliable

:bye:

This is huge news for Wilford fans

Good news for Wilford fans, yesBad news for us FFL fans trying to buy Wilford low :hot:

I wouldn't be surprised to see Matt Jones and Reggie Williams be overpriced and Wilford still the best value play of the bunch, but you're certainly not going to get him as late as you would have before this.Of course I can think of a couple guys in my league who have a high potential to draft Jimmy Sniff and crow about how he's lasted so long and what a steal they just got.

That said many thought that he would return to the team for the 2006 season as the Jaguars' top WR while younger receivers Matt Jones and Ernest Wilford continue to develop.

:reggiewilliamsowner: :bag:

In the article it said that Jimmy Smith was considering retiring after the lost to the Steelers. The Jaguars told him to take his time. He did and still decided that he wanted to step away from game.

I'll give him the benefit of the doubt and not assume that it's drug related.

Next stop, HOF.

Matt Jones last year... Garrard vs Lefwich..

Matt Jones finished the season (including playoffs) with42 catches for 526 yards and 5 TD's.he rushed 12 times for 51 yardsIf you look at his numbers in weeks 1 through 10 when Leftwich was the starting QB, you’ll see the start of a decent first year receiver. In those 10 total games you'll see that Matt Jones' numbers were far superior with Byron at the helm but as you can see both QB's took until about their 5th or 6th week to start using Matt Jones Extensively, especially in the red-zone (I took week 12 as a Garrard game since Leftwich completed only 2 passes for 18 yards, neither to Matt Jones.)Seattle  2/22/0 plus 2/28 rushing@ Ind  1/9/0  plus 2/7 rushing@NYJ    4/31/0Den      3/27/  plus 1/-7Cin      0/0/0@Pit    2/20/1 plus 1/-7@Stl    4/38/1Hou    3/21/0Balt  5/117/1  plus 2/12@Ten  3/46/1Garrard starts@Ari  1/7/0    plus 1/8@Cle  0/0/0  plus 1/3/0IND    3/28/0SF      2/11/0  plus 1/2@Hou  0/0/0  plus 1/5/0TEN  3/55/1 plus 0/0/0Leftwich starts the playoff game, but Garrard comes in@NE  6/94/0  (5/53/0 with Leftwich plus 1/41/0 Garrard) Total stats:11 games With Leftwich:  32/384/46 games with Garrard10/142/1it seems that it took both QB's some time to get comfortable with Matt Jones.  In the 6th game of the season we started seeing Matt Jones score in the red-zone and in weeks 6 through 10 he put up 17 catches for 242 yards and 3 TD's and looked like he has turned the corner.  This is also when Leftwich got hurt.  Matt Jones' first 5 games with Leftwich were very similar to his first 6 games with Garrard.  In the last week with Garrard and part of the playoff game it seemed that Garrard was utilizing Matt Jones more often.

it seemed that he started coming together with both QB's around the 5th or 6th game played. Hopefully he'll be able to build upon that next year.I know some may have been disappointed in his first year, but I was not. This is all you could have expected out of a guy who never played the position. He gave you TD's in five different games and had one breakout game of 117 yards and a TD.. I hope that he uses the off-season to get better acquainted with his QB's and comes back a better wide receiver.

Answer: -1

Interesting stats:

The 37-year-old receiver led the Jags with 70 catches for 1,023 yards and six touchdowns last season. He ranks seventh in NFL history with 862 receptions and 11th in receiving yards. He has more receptions than every receiver in the Hall of Fame, and only Marvin Harrison has more catches and yards receiving than Smith since 1996.

I have to say it bugged me a little when I heard he had to be talked back into playing again. I will definitely pay more attention when I hear that about a player now.

Jimmy Smith has had 128 and 134 targets the last couple of years. It will be interesting to see how those get broken out.

For reference as to how much he was the true WR1, Wilford was second in targets in 2005 with 74 while Jones and Williams added 69 and 64.

This is much more  for Byron Leftwich than  for Wilford and Jones IMHO

I agree. Leftwich is in trouble and also downgrade the JAX RB situation. The remaining WR corp may now match TENN as the worst in the NFL. I would think they will go get a vet to help out. A guy like Donte Stallworth may work along side a Wilford/Jones. I doubt Reggie Williams has any real effect.

Exactly Jason. Anytime your number one receiving option leaves your team wihtout an immediate replacement, you've got to lower the expectations for the QB.At this point, it's hard to say who jumps up. Wilford looks like the morning line favorite, but Jones and Williams are not that far behind. If anything, this could bump up Marcedes Lewis.

As for Smith, a tremendous career. He was already 37 years old, so it's not like his career was cut short by much. 862 catches, over 12,000 yards and 67 touchdowns is close to HOF stuff. Not too shabby for a guy who came out of Jackson State.

And to think I got thwarted in an attempt to get him in a free agent purchase in April (Dynasty), having to settle for Kennison instead. :pics:

This certainly will effect Leftwich, but up the value of all 3 WR's for the Jags. Mercedes Will also see his stock jump. This should prove to be an interesting training camp for Jacksonville if the roster remains as is.

Sorry to see you hang 'em up Jimmy, you where one of my favorites.

Dude, that was a horrible trade.  You couldn't get more than that for Portis?

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>
No it is not IDP. It is 1 PPR for what it is worth. I am not big on Portis at all and wasn't on Wilford. I considered 1.10 > Wilford and CJ's 7+years > Portis 3-4 yearsPlus I will be starting 4 WR's and 1 RB (Owens, Wayne, CJ, D.Jackson) with P.Manning so I feel alright.

Except my backfield consists of Willie Parker, Mike Anderson, and Samkon Gado as my go to guys.

Ouuuchhhh. Portis + KC Offense = Money. Portis is 25. CJ is 28. :wall: :wall: :wall: :wall: :wall: :wall:

Spike - you might want to edit your title. ;)

As much as I enjoy this board, the "evaluate my trade" stuff has a better place.

Big bump to Marcedes Lewis. I think the team knew what was up and took the best receiver on the board...which just happened to be a TE. :football:
