I think it's too early to tell. While TO is certainly gone, there's still the possibility they keep Ocho (though today's performance probably makes that less likely).They've kept Simpson around forever (3 years) and he didn't get his 2nd NFL catch until last week. A talented package that never showed that he had learned the offense enough all this time. When they both came in, he was season as the project with the higher upside and Caldwell as the more pro-ready guy even though they drafted him later. In a strange way, that's perhaps what this game ended up showing. Both guys worked really hard to get into this position after falling down the depth chart (or in Simpson's case into persistent deactivation hell). Both became dedicated to learn how to run block (Caldwell started appearing more in run situations in the last few weeks, Simpson more recently). I do think there's a good chance that they'll turn the page on Ocho and TO and roll with Shipley, Simpson, and Caldwell. Shipley was sort of a forgotten man a bit today (though he did have targets and the late TD) but I don't think that's an indication of anything bigger. Throw in Gresham and suddenly this looks like a young, hungry receiver corps. I like this. Based on the tiny sample size of today, Simpson probably showed more why they've kept him around all this time. He seems a little more boom/bust compared to Caldwell. I think both will get their chance now, though stay tuned in case I'm premature in my assessment that the Ocho 1/2 of the T-Ocho show is being canceled.-QG

I must say, I really like Andre Caldwell. He is the possession receiver type out of these two players. Caldwell has shown he is a dependable guy (remember his catch against the Steelers to win the game in 2009?) and keeps the chains moving. In PPR leagues, which is mainly what I play in, I'm picking this guy up anywhere I can. Simpson is an intriguing talent too though and it's worth keeping an eye on reports about him this offseason.

Coach Marvin Lewis indicated Monday that Jerome Simpson has a big supporter in Bengals owner Mike Brown.
"He can run and jump like not many people I've seen before," Lewis said. "My boss sees it too." Simpson broke out for 124 yards and two TDs on six catches in the Bengals' Week 16 upset of San Diego. Brown's support may go a long way this offseason with Lewis almost certainly not returning. It bodes well for Simpson as Chad Ochocinco's potential replacement in 2011.

Simpson has sick, sick athletic ability. The kind that only comes along every once in awhile. It was one of the things that made me so high on him coming out of college. The downside was he was as green as grass. Sure enough, he didn't catch on as quickly as I would've liked. In fact, he downright disappointed. I eventually ended up dropping him in the leagues I drafted him.
That said, I always kept an eye on him. Every once in awhile, you would hear a blurb about Simpson progressing. They worked & worked with him, never giving up, mainly because of that tremendous athleticism. Fast forward to his 3rd season, week 16, presto, the light goes on.
Simpson had been showing signs of what he could do before then, but he finally got his chance with injuries to TO & Ocho. You can see it on film (TV)...the explosion, the hops. Simpson sticks out like a sore thumb (in a good way). He also has huge, soft hands.
I believe Jerome Simpson has what it takes to be a FF stud. Don't underestimate what a player like him is capable of doing when the light finally goes on. And with TO & Ocho likely not coming back next season, this is the kind of cheap pickup that can pay HUGE dividends. I like Simpson much better than Caldwell & Shipley, more polished WRs, but they don't have near the upside.
If he keeps improving, there's no doubt in my mind he could be their top WR as soon as 2011. At the very least, he's the perfect stash for next season. Not sure what he'll do this week, maybe nothing, but don't think this kid is a fluke. I really believe Simpson has turned the corner.

Thats a pretty huge assumption on 85 staying. Also, this offense ran for years with Chad as the speedy outside guy and TJ as the possession receiver. If Chad is here, I think they start Caldwell opposite him and Simpson is more of the Chris Henry role. If he isn't, Simpson will play the outside next year.Of course, what REALLY makes it hard to sort out is the probablity of installing an entirely new offense for next year.

I think that is about 85% to blame on poor coaching. Gresham waved the ball around in one hand all year long too. Drove me nuts.One thing that does concern me a little is he seems to need about 15 yards of space to get both feet inbounds after a catch. Maybe I've been spoiled by watching Ocho his entire career, but I guess I can live with it as long he stops putting it on the ground.

I spoke with Dave Lapham on a plane trip a couple months ago, former Bengal, who covers college football and the Bengals. He said the coaching staff would have dropped him LAST year if not for Mikey's input.
