Jerry Porter demands trade (1 Viewer)

Jerry Porter says he's informed the Raiders of his demand to be dealt.

Ex-Raiders OL Lincoln Kennedy told a radio show of Porter's wishes this weekend and Porter went public Tuesday. "Yes. Absolutely. I've told them that," he said. Porter has clashed with Art Shell and WRs coach Fred Belitnikoff this offseason, engaging in heated shouting matches with the old Hall of Famers. Oakland would take a large cap hit if Porter were to be traded or cut. Jul. 26 - 11:48 am et

ahhhh....just remembering the first half of the 2002 season when this guy was a great sleeper WR3

i get the feeling that he and Art don't see eye to eye.

WR J. Porter Wants Out Of Oakland

Nancy Gay, San Francisco Chonicle - [Full Article]

Believe what you have heard. There is a huge rift between WR Jerry Porter, the Raiders' sometimes spectacular, often annoying and always baffling receiver, and Art Shell, the Hall of Fame tackle and new head coach. On Tuesday, Porter spelled it out concisely. He and Shell aren't on the same page. Porter wants to be traded. "Yes. Absolutely. I've told them that," Porter said on the team's first day of practice at training camp in Napa. That's right. Day 1. LINK

Don't Sleep On Speedy WR Whitted

Steve Corkran, Contra Costa Times, Sporting News - [Full Article]

WR Alvis Whitted is one of Oakland's fastest receivers and someone capable of getting open deep and turning a pass into a long catch-and-run play. Managing general partner Al Davis covets speed, and he has admired Whitted's vast potential for many years. Therefore, look for Whitted to get plenty of playing time as a backup receiver this season.

If Ron Curry is healthy I'd be surprised if he didn't easily outperform Whitted.

Too bad Curry's Achilles has been issue the last two years. That kid was starting show some promise before his first injury. :(

Agree, but with Al Davis calling the shots in Oakland, and Curry on PUP, Whitted stands to gain opportunity. Sometimes that's all it takes, especially if you are coveted by the Owner.

If the asking price (2nd rounder) for Porter goes down, then expect him to go. The guy is making peanuts in 06 and 07 (base salary of 1 million each year) compared to his talent level.

what a tool - as someone posted in another thread -

TO attitude without all that superstar ability baggage!

NE needs a WR :bye:

Just once I'd like to see a player like Porter not shifted or released at any price and forced to cave in and play. Make him play until his contract expires. If he refuses to play, tough.

From ESPNPorter told the newspaper that his agent told him that the Raiders have asked for two No. 1 picks in return for him in any deal. "Why ... would you ask for a No. 1 for me, or ask for two No. 1s for me, when I wasn't even a No. 1?," he told the newspaper.

article says they'd take a huge cap hit. what kind of signing bonus did he get?

Before Moss came on board, I'd say it would have been a relatively big story. Now it's basically a yawner.

The guy could learn a ton from Fred Belitnikoff - too bad he's too much of a tool to realize it.

At that point, Porter recalls, the head coach intervened.

"And then Art chimes in, 'Who the f -- do you think you are?' " Porter recalled. "And then it starts from there. Art says, 'Who ... do you think you're talking to?'

"And that was that." Porter said.

LOL :hophead:

$13 mil

USA Today has it at $7M.Link

But to trade him would accelerate the remainder of the signing bonus so you're talking about a cap hit of at least 5 or 6 million (and that's if it's a $7M bonus, a $13M bonus would be impossible for OAK to take).

After they signed Porter to the huge deal, I was shocked that they went out and traded for Moss also. Of course, if they're asking for two #1s, then the team is just being a richard also. Nobody in the league would trade even one first-rounder for Porter, and asking for two is just a way of complying with the request to be traded without actually making any effort. I don't like moves like that. And I can't say I understand it either.

Porter could put up huge numbers in Philly, New England, Green Bay, K.C..........
He also could have put up huge numbers in Oakland...and didnt.Of those situations you listed, only Philly would give him more opportunity than he has already had.

:goodposting: It took him a little while, but Tim Brown came a huge way under Belitnikoff. (Does that phrase make sense? I need coffee.)

What previous opportunity is it that you speak of diesel?2004?

No running game & 1st Curry then Gabriel getting almost as many targets as Porter did?

Other than that, he's been a #2 or #3 WR.

Are we presuming hed be a #1 over a guy like Deion Branch or Eddie Kennison or Donald Driver?Hes had plenty of opportunities to produce in his career, and has taken advantage of none of them.

So assuming Porter gets dealt or doghoused, who is the guy to pick up here, Gabriel or Curry?
People are remembering too much of what Curry looked like before 2 Achillies injuries. Call it the David Boston effect.Gabriel would be the guy to get.

Two first rounders...wow. Why didn't they just ask for a leprechaun riding a unicorn? So, obviously a f-you move from Davis and Shell, meaning I assume that Porter will be staying in Oakland. However, why would they want to keep a potential cancer in the locker room? How does keeping Porter, who obviously is not going to be giving anything close to 100%, help the team at all. Seems like a "cut off your nose to spite your face" move. Very confused.

lol @ Whitted. He may not be Porter-level stupid, but also isn't exactly the sharpest tool in the shed. As for Porter, I agree it would suck to keep a loser like this around who just wants to sit around and pout, but screw this caving into punks all the time too. In fact give him an Owens-like suspension if push comes to shove.

Funny just the other day it seemed like OAK had a ton of WRs. Now it seems like they may have none that can really be counted on.

Because, as stated earlier in the thread, they will be throwing away millions of dollars they have invested in him, and will take a huge cap hit in doing so.

From KFFL Today - Jerry McDonald, of Inside Bay Area, reports Oakland Raiders WR Ronald Curry (Achilles') will be placed on the Physically Unable to Perform list.

U sure ???Raiders: Curry removed from PUP

THE NEWS

The Raiders took wide receiver Ronald Curry off the physically unable to perform list and allowed him to join practice on Tuesday, the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Curry is recovering from two left Achilles' tendon tears in as many seasons.

Our View

Jerry Porter's schism with head coach Art Shell opens up an opportunity for other Raider pass-catchers, but Curry first has to prove he can run a route without tearing his lower leg up.

Of those situations you listed, only Philly would give him more opportunity than he has already had.

As a #3 WR, 688 yards & 9 TD's in 2002 isn't taking advantage of his situation and producing?998 yards & 9 TD's in 2004, despite a QB change part way through the season, no running game to speak of and the #2 WR getting almost as many targets, isn't taking advantage of the situation & producing?

942 yards & 5 TD's in 2005 as the #2 WR, isn't taking advantage of the situation & producing?

We seem to have very divergent views on what his opportunities actually were and whether or not he capitalized on them.

I don't think Porter is quite as bad as you're making him out to be.

This gets into that financial territory that I just don't understand. Why would they be taking a cap hit if they trade him? Because all of his signing bonus would have to be paid this year, and that bonus is not transferrable to the team that gets him in a trade?

Are Porter and Ashlie Lelie twins? Do they have the same agent? Both seem to be making very foolish moves for their respective careers.

Not sure if this was mentioned already but Sirius just had had Nancy Gay from SF Chronicle on.

Porter has been bitter ever since the Raiders traded for Moss.

Moss was running laps after practice because of a mental mistake. Thought that was interesting sign of his respect for Shell.

Found this article which, paints a slightly different picture of Porter and his recent antics... if anything I think this news makes Porter a great buy low canidate.

Porter Time to Shine - Inside Bay Area

NAPA — Jerry Porter gazes at his image in the darkened window and recoils. He is displeased, because there is too much darkness and too little contrast to allow full appreciation.

And if there is anything J.P. wants, it is to be fully appreciated.

So he makes the adjustment. He steps back until he's in full sunlight.

Porter nods, poses with his hands on his hips, glances down upon the brightest, blingiest, sickest belt ever imagined — gold dollar signs linked together, accented with a massive rash of gleaming studs at the center — and admires not only the shiny accessory but also the way it hangs on his new physique.

A physique that arrived in camp 23 pounds lighter than it was last year, down to 220, apparently cut from the same stone and by the same sculptor who chiseled Terrell Owens.

Porter's fitness stands as visible evidence he has no plans to let his discontent affect his dedication to the Raiders.

"I'm here to do my job," the seventh-year wide receiver said Tuesday as he stood in thefrom Sports 1

midday heat after team's first training-camp practice.

He addressed the topic because he is the Raider most often described as disgruntled, floating in a sea of rumors that he wanted out, that his attendance in the team's off-season program was at an all-time low and that there was friction with his new head coach, Art Shell.

Truth or fiction?

"It's not BS," Porter acknowledged. "But I'm under contract for two more years, so they have me for two more years."

Which sets the stage for Porter to join the long and distinguished list of Raiders who have encountered frustration with the organization. Remember Marcus Allen? Howie Long knows the feeling. Tim Brown had his moments. Chester McGlockton was consumed by it. Steve Beuerlein's differences became irreconcilable, leading to a bitter parting.

Porter's conditioning implies that any hints of animosity will serve as fuel. One has to assume he didn't arrive in the best shape of his life just to loaf through camp, sleep through meetings and roll his eyes at the coaches.

This, J. P. insisted, is about fulfilling an obligation. It's a matter of professionalism.

"That's all it is," he said. "Everybody, no matter who you work with, has somebody at their job they don't like. What do you do? You work through it. You don't have to like everybody."

What the Raiders appear to have is a player ready to mine his talent — partly because he believes there is more and partly because he's ticked.

"A lot of things went on that I didn't agree with," Porter

said, without being specific. "There were a lot of things that were basically done out of spite, to me and around me, that I didn't like. So, in turn, I did a couple of things."

One of which was to attend fewer "voluntary" off-season workouts, something bound to irritate his coaches. J. P. went his own way, did his own thing, and the results are nothing less than spectacular.

"Usually every year, I'm here for the off-season program," he said. "But this year I went down to Florida. They saw me maybe eight times all off-season. Usually, I'm here for 40-plus workouts."

Shell has low-keyed his relationship with Porter, insisting things are fine. Maybe they are, now. But more likely, their relationship — like that between all players and a new coach — is a work in progress.

"I've never dealt with an old-school guy, and I mean that honestly." Porter said. "But (Shell) seems to be paying more attention to detail. He wants guys to make sure everyone is onside. He wants everybody on time for meetings. It's about the little things.

"I guess, with the parity in this league, everybody is basically the same. So it's a matter of execution. If you pay attention to the little things, on and off the field, I guess it can't do anything but help you."

Porter finished last season with a team-high 76 catches and was second, behind Randy Moss, with 942 yards. Yet both wideouts were at times neglected. That should change, assuming Aaron Brooks can unload more quickly and be more efficient than the quarterback he replaced, Kerry Collins.

Inasmuch as J.P. is in his prime, having turned 28 this month, he knows this season is important, for him and the team, in terms of perceived attitude, established reputation and results.

"It's not like they're going to fold the organization," Porter said. "But it's time to do something. It's really nothing to be said. We have the pieces in place. There are no excuses. It's time to go play."

Time to sharpen the focus. Time to define the point of view. Time for the pro to come forth, shine like that belt and perhaps receive due appreciation.
