A deal sending Jets linebacker Jonathan Vilma to the Saints will be completed and announced as early as this morning, according to NFL sources. The teams reached a tentative agreement Thursday night, with the Jets getting a conditional draft pick, probably in 2009, based on Vilma's performance.

In his first two years as a Jet, Vilma seemed destined for stardom. He was NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2004 and a Pro Bowl alternate in 2005. But in 2006, when Eric Mangini became coach and installed a 3-4 scheme, .Vilma's production dropped.

He played seven games in 2007 before a knee injury sidelined him. Vilma had surgery to remove bone fragments from his knee in November. While he was sidelined, rookie David Harris emerged as a standout, and despite starting only seven games, he led the team in tackles.

Solid pick-up for the Saints defense.

Vilma can be a tackle machine and the Saints needed a type of player who can run sideline to sideline and make plays. If he's healthy entering next season this could be a major coup for New Orleans. The Jets did well to just clear him out and make a clear path for David Harris to run the field in New York.

This is a good pickup for New Orleans. He will definitely help their linebacker corps.
if the knee is ok. seems to be obvious doubt, or else the pick wouldn't be conditional based on his 08 performance.still, it's a huge upgrade for the saints because even dhani jones would be upgrading their LBs

Not happy at all about this as a jets fan. We should have secured a pick in this year's draft. There had to have been somebody to give it to us. I was against trading vilma at all, but this just stinks.

Anyways, good luck to Jon. It's not his fault that Mangini was so set in trying to be the Patriots South.

i like this move a lot. Jenkins has been healthy the past few years, and we'll probably get the 3rd back when we deal Robertson.

I don't like it at all..... Getting a 3rd and a condtional next year for Robertson and Vilma is horsemeat.

I liked Rogers more than Jenkins - Jenkins certainly doensn't fit Mangini's "Eat Breathe sleep FOOTBALL" mantra, I've heard from people in NC that he's a bit of a bum.

Not to mention, I was looking at that 3rd round pick in this draft for a solid Offensive linemen or a DT like Rubin......

Well, since day 1 I've said Mangini's career could depend on filling that 3-4 DT position - Well, Eric, there ya go..... You might as well make a room ready in your house cuz Kris Jenkins is practically family now - You just tied you career to this guy.

I agree that it sucks to give these guys up for so little, but thats what happens when you murder the value of 2 of your best defenders by switching to a system that your current roster has no chance of fitting.I like Jenkins move, as he is a proven DT who can play the nose. The NT who we would draft in the 3rd round (assuming we went that route) had about a 10% chance of ever becoming the player that Kris Jenkins is. (when he is healthy, which he has been for 2 years) The 5th is a throwaway.

I also wanted a pick this year for vilma, so I'm upset about that one.

In a perfect work, I'd rather keep D-Rob and try him at DE. However, with his cap number, that isn't happening.

The jets knew they were going to take a bath on the Vilma and D-Rob trades. (Although we don't know where and for what D-Rob is going for yet) They both have bad knees and are both awful fits for the jets 3-4. They both also had issues with the contracts (D-robs is too big, Vilma's is running out) There is almost no way the jets weren't going to get bent over dealing these two. They had no leverage at all and were dealing two injured players. Would i have rather gotten more? of course. But it just wasn't going to happen. Time to get over it and move on.

EDIT: As for Rogers, he would have cost more and has a far worse reputation than Jenkins. His injury concerns are also more recent.

Outstanding deal for the Saints, if only to establish an attitude in their LB corps that has been missing since the days of Swilling/Johnson/Jackson/Mills. They tried fixing this via the draft with picks like Fincher and Watson and they never panned out, so this is an excellent response to a problem area.

They should also get the added benefit of Vilma playing with a chip on his shoulder after the way everything played out in NY.

if jon gets healthy, he'll be a great player again in the 4-3. Good guy too. He's an elite talent who got phased out by the wrong scheme. But overall, he was really classy about the whole thing. Hope he does well.

Imo, I never understood the man-love for Vilma. Yes, passionate good guy, smart player that called the plays, but he never made impact plays and was always dragged four yards on every tackle even in the 4-3 defense. I wish him the best of luck, but won't miss him at all.

I dont really agree. The guy made plays sideline to sideline. Was never a massive hitter, but he played very well.He won't be missed in our new system, but i think he would have done well next to harris once he healed. As for Harris, I'm really looking forward to seeing him with a year under his belt. The guy has the looks of a pro-bowl ILB<

I love this move by the Saints. Linebacker is a soft spot in this year's draft and the Saints need major help there.

This frees them to take a corner in the first if they don't get one in FA. Otherwise they may have been forced to take Keith Rivers first.

Not much to add, other than Gary Gibbs just got himself a very good fit for his scheme if Vilma's knee issues aren't a long term concern. I'm a little nervous about the bits and pieces we're getting about the knee though. Removal of bone fragments, questionable degenerative condition, not able to run for another month. Sounds a little like microfracture surgery to me, which, while it isn't the potential death sentence it may have been ten years ago, is still a concern in a guy who needs his speed and agility to drive his sideline-to-sideline range.

I'm with Bloom, though, the Saints' MLB slot has been a revolving door of suckitude for way too many years. Fincher, Simoneau, Ruff, past his prime McKinnon, etc. Not since Winifred Tubbs has there been a true man-in-the-middle.

Be interesting to know what the conditions are with regard to playing time, etal.
