Jets Trade for Doug Jolley

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/colum..._len&id=2042190

Continuing a whirlwind flurry of wheeling-and-dealing, the Oakland Raiders on Wednesday evening achieved their goal of securing a first-round draft choice, by trading veteran tight end Doug Jolley to the New York Jets.

In exchange for Jolley, who started 26 games in three seasons, the Raiders received the Jets' first-round choice, the 26th pick overall. Oakland had been without a first-rounder, having traded it to Minnesota as part of the package to acquire wide receiver Randy Moss from the Vikings.

It is believed that, in addition to Jolley, the Jets also received a second-round choice. The Raiders owned a pair of second-round selections, their own (38th overall), and another one (No. 47) acquired from Houston on Tuesday night in a deal that sent former first-round cornerback Phillip Buchanon to the Texans.

There have been rumors for several days that the Raiders were accumulating extra picks in an effort to use them as bargaining chips for a foray back into the first round. There had also been rumblings that Oakland was shopping Jolley -- who, like Buchanon fell out of favor with the coaching staff -- in trade discussions.

New York officials have been attempting for months to bolster the tight end position. The Jets signed restricted free agent Jeb Putzier to an offer sheet last month, but Denver kept the three-year veteran by matching the five-year deal. Anthony Becht, the Jets' starter for the past four seasons, defected to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as an unrestricted free agent.

The most experienced tight end on the Jets' roster, before adding Jolley, was Chris Baker. But the three-year veteran, a third-round choice in 2002, has started just one game and posted only 34 receptions.

Jolley, 26, was the Raiders' second-round selection in 2002, and the former Brigham Young standout had 90 catches for 972 yards and five touchdowns in 47 appearances for the Raiders. Forty-five of his receptions resulted in first downs. His best season was his rookie campaign, in which he posted 32 catches for 409 yards and two touchdowns, despite starting only three games.

Here's more:The Raiders moved back into the first round of Saturday's NFL Draft, agreeing to a trade deal with the Jets on Wednesday that will send fourth-year tight end Doug Jolley to New York, along with three 2005 picks, for the No. 26 overall pick and a seventh-round selection. Once Jolley passes a physical and the trade becomes final, the Raiders will have a first-round pick, a second-round pick (No. 38 overall), two third-round selections (Nos. 69 and 7 and two sixth-round picks (Nos. 212 and 214). In return, two NFL sources said the Jets will receive the second-round pick the Raiders acquired on Tuesday from Houston in the Phillip Buchanon deal (No. 47 overall), the 182nd and 185th picks overall (both in the sixth-round) as well as Jolley, 26, a former second-round pick out of Brigham Young in the 2002 draft.

DUnno if this is a good move or not... they get a TE with potential and they also get another 2nd round pick....No Heath miller eh?

I had them primed for a big corner (J. MIller) there. That could get the Raiders a nice LB (Burnett, Thurman, Ruud) or a good Corner of their own (Washington, Miller, Jackson)COlin

I would normally be skeptical, but Mike Heimerdinger is the OC now, so I'll give Terry Bradway the benefit of the doubt here. For now.He had GREAT success as the wide receiver coach while in Denver(Rod Smith, Ed McCaffrey) and is one of the top three(imho) OC in football period. What he did with Calico, Mason, Volek, etc stands out.He built his system and knows what parts will fit. I like Jolley years ago(had him on my FF team), and I liked what I saw, but wondered why he hasn't developed.
TLEF316 Posted Today, 07:04 PM you cant be serious. Just when i think the jets are turning it around
I think they'll be ok. I do not like giving up the #1, and dropping down, because I was hoping to get Justin Miller, but obviously, the Raiders high #2 pick is not really bad. I guess Bradway wasn't happy and did mention that there were only 15-20 players worthy of being drafted in the first round. He did hint that he'd trade down.Would you be so upset if we drafted Mike Patterson DT and Mike Clayton? What about Marlin Jackson or Fabian Washington? CJ Mosely? JJ Arrington? There are plenty of good players around. Don't fret. I think we'll be ok.

Teyo Johnson anyone????
thats my thinking. i drafted him a couple years ago and held him for a while. dropped him last year because he was worthless. just picked him back up and snagged jolley at the same time

The Jets overpaid for him. Jolley isn't worth a first rounder and now the Jets have watered down their draft. Hats off to the Raiders for getting this done. They stole that first rounder from the Jets.

Rape.  Absolute rape!

Getting a 1st rounder by giving up a guy who might have been Oakland's 3rd-best TE.

:excited:
while giving a 2nd rounder and 2 6th rounders as well (for a 7th)Would I have done it as a JET? If I truly believed that being in the lower third of the 1st was a bad thing and wanted to move down as opposed to up, while solidifying my TE spot (that my OC really knows how to use) - probably.

Would I do it as a Raider - absolutely provided I think I could get value where I landed in the 1st.

Both teams thought they were getting a good deal, otherwise it would never have happened

it's not like the Raiders "got a first rounder" for Jolley. They moved up what, 16 slots?
Exactly...I say the Jets did better on this deal, especially if they are looking at a position that is deep. They could get almost equal value, plus they added a starting TE.And who knows what could happen with a sixth round pick?? :excited:

Prior to this trade, the Raiders did not have a 1st round pick. Now, the Raiders have a 1st round pick.

Pretty safe to say that the Raiders "got a first rounder" for Jolley.

WOWGo Gang Green...This also may be a sign of the rumored Andre Dyson SigningMole

Actually looks like 21 spots - the original Houston #47 to the Jets 26. 'Bout time we sacrifice offense for defense (presumably). Now to package this pick & Woodson to move up higher ...

Come on, RN, you're smarter than that. The Jets traded down about 20 spots, so I wouldn't say it was a rape. What was rape was that abomination of a trade Washington and Denver made.

Am I happy about this? Not really. I have mixed feelings about it, because I really liked our chances of getting a S or CB, but it is what it is, and the Jets now get an extra 2nd round pick to fill out some positions of need.

I think we gave up a bit too much, but obviously, Mike Heimerdinger and Bradway must really like Jolley to have made this move.

I think there will be some pretty good players available in the second round.

Overall, a pretty good move by Oakland.

You have to look at it from Oakland's view. TE is one of the deepest positions on their team. As I already stated, with the expected emergence of Anderson, Jolley might have legitimately been their 3rd-best option at the position. Moving up 20 spots in a draft like this one cannot be downplayed. Obviously, Big Al made the move with someone specific in mind.

After losing Buchanon, I'm not sure I want to see C-Wood leave town. We won't be able to stop ANYONE through the air. There's no way Oakland can replace two starting corners in the draft, and I don't have all that much faith in Walker or Asomugha.

why has jolley fallen out of favor? i thought he was productive when they threw him the rock.I actually like what the Jets did here. move down 20 spots and pickup a starting TE who can catch the rock?no brainer

Great move for Oakland. They traded from an area of depth and strength for them. The Jets need a TE and CB. This gets the TE and according to the above link they are pursuing Dyson to fill the CB need (and according to the article, Ty Law isn't out of the picture yet either) Overall I say its great for Oakland and not bad for the Jets, they are filling their needs and adding draft picks. Bradway had a good draft last year, lets see what he does with all these picks now.

Oh, I do, RN, trust me. Jolley bought you 20 something spots. Excellent move. Were I a Raider fan, I'd be happy too. I might have like the move more if we would've gotten your higher 2nd, but what can I do?Right now, most of the Jets boards are ablaze....Plenty of angry fans...

If it turns into Dyson,Jolly and #47 after all is said and done, I'd be happy, saving marginally on the move from 26-47 to bank it on a Andre Dyson, I am all for it. Nothing is certain with draft picks, but Jolly and Dyson (assuming, read: Please Lord) can play and have shown so in the past.

why has jolley fallen out of favor?
I never said he did. I just think the other two guys will prove to be better players.I can see the Jets' motivation, however. After watching Becht for 5 years, ya know?

The first two posts are a little different. The 6th round+7th round picks mentioned in the second.32 teams.182 divided by 32 is 5.6 or a fifth round pick not 6th.Something "off" there.Courtney Anderson isn't even on their website's depth chart:http://www.raiders.com/team/depth.jspTeyo is inexperienced getting about 150 yards each of the last 2 years. I know there are guys here that praise Teyo but he hasn't done much of anything. They're weak at TE. They created a hole in their roster just before the draft. That is so foolish unless you are getting extremely high value out of the deal. Oh wait they did. What's next for the RaidersVeteran TEs available? Draft yet another young raw TE?Hope one of Teyo or Courtney pans out and if not roll with alot of 3 WR sets in 05?I would have thought Jolley would be worth a much later pick. That said, is there a good Tackle they can grab with that 2nd pick? IIRC they lost a T in free agency and I'd figure leaving Chad and Curtis poorly protected is the last thing that franchise would want to do.

Try this. Ourlads is the bible of depth charts. They will have Jolley off of that DC by the time you wake up tomorrow.

Add in the 50 or so Comp picks and this will make more sense

The Raiders move a couple of malcontents that weren't working out and two sixth round picks for a first round pick and a third round pick. Also, they still have Woodson as ammunition to move up further. Maybe, since Washington likes to get raped, they should talk to the Raiders about Woodson. Can you say CB and DE with the Raiders first two picks?

I don't think that this is that bad of a deal for the Jets. They move back 21 spots, but get two 6ths and Jolley. They needed a TE and Jolley should be a good fit for them. Moving back 21 spots may seem like a lot, but I really don't know if the player talent drops that much from #26 to #47.

The Jets now have; 2nd's #47 and #57, 3rd #88, 4th #127, 5th #161, 6th's #182 #185 and #198, and one of 7th #230 or #240.

If CB is a position they'll be looking at, there will still be some good talent left for them there. With Justin Miller's recent arrest, who knows, maybe he'll be there for them at #47. My other first thought was possibly a RB.
#38 not #74In addition to Jolley, the Jets got the Raiders' second-round pick this year, the 38th selection overall. The Raiders still have another second-rounder, the 47th overall choice, acquired from Houston on Tuesday night in a deal that sent former first-round cornerback Phillip Buchanon to the Texans

Thanks Mole. Now I like it even more for the Jets.I was going off what GBN had reported:

(8:00 PM): Busy beaver Raiders trade again; back in 1st round with Jets' pick... Oakland continued its odyssey through the 2005 draft as the Raiders made their second big trade in two days, and 3rd of the draft year. The Raiders got back into the first round by acquiring the 26th pick overall from the Jets in exchange for TE Doug Jolley and the 47th pick, one of the two second round picks the Raiders received from Houston yesterday in exchange for CB Phil Buchanon, plus two sixth rounders, 182nd and 185th picks. . In addition to the 26th pick, the Raiders also received a 7th round selection

i guess deal wasnt horrible, but it is kind of weird how guys like james and alexander cant even fetch a #1 pick, and even better players like buchanon only get (2 and 3) wouldnt most people agree that buchanon is better at his position then jolley, i dont get trade really you move down 21 spots for a TE who is really unproven, (should have signed freddie jones or drafted a TE, I never would have done the deal) you think middle tier TEs like (boo williams, LJ smith or b. miller) would help a team move up 21 spots like that)

if the jets bring in dyson and get the #38 not the #47, its a good move. I have to see what CB's (or heath) fall to #26 before i fully evaluateedit: its still frustrating, considering what denver got for # 25. i dont consider 6th round picks to be very valuable at all

not as bad but i totally forgot, denver got a first in next years draft for there pick which is only 1 spot off the Jets, pretty big difference between them 2 deals for first round picks,

Looks like there's some uncertainty as to which picks were traded.

ESPN is reporting:

"In addition to Jolley, the Jets got the Raiders' second-round pick this year, the 38th selection overall. The Raiders still have another second-rounder, the 47th overall choice, acquired from Houston on Tuesday night in a deal that sent former first-round cornerback Phillip Buchanon to the Texans."

CBS is reporting:

"The Raiders got Houston's 47th overall pick in the second round in the Buchanon trade Tuesday, then gave that pick to the Jets in Wednesday's deal."

The CBS report is an AP report, so I'm inclined to trust it less than Lenny P.

I find your posts to be somewhat difficult to comprehend.

You have to like what the Raiders have done this off season especially on Offense. They have aquired the best WR in the game. They signed one of the hottest FA RB's on the market. They have re-signed their best WR from last year who will be a great number 2 WR this year. They got rid of a 3rd string TE to allow them a first round selection. I think the Raiders do have their work cut out for them on defense but moving up in the draft will allow them to take an immediate difference maker on defense. This team has great or bust written all over it.

I think the Jets will be quite happy with Jolly. He will do well in that offense. He just is not the run blocker Norv wants in his offense and C. Anderson has proven he is taht and can also catch the ball. Teyo is the wild card. You think maybe the coaches know a little better then us if he is ready to contribute more consistently? Probably.I think it is a win-win deal. I don't like it as much if the Raiders gave up the 37th pick, obviously. Heres to hoping it's the 48th they gave up and if not, I still like the deals Al has been working. CHEERS RAIDER FANS! :banned: :banned:
