Jim Trotter: Titans' Young left with coal in free-agent stocking (1 Viewer)

Jeff Fisher: He’s going to play as much and as often as he possibly can. If it’s 60 plays a game, that’s great. We still have an interest in signing additional players at the position, obviously, because there’s going to be some rotation there. So it’s as many plays and as often as he can possibly play.

Wow.

This thread has really gone downhill since I started it.

It's amazing how you can't have any Titans thread on here without a degradation into a "VY sucks!" instigated pissing contest.
It's not the Titans, it's Vince Young.Anytime you put his name in a topic, you're only asking for it.

You'd have far better luck keeping to the "Titans Offseason Thread" rather than posting a "Young" thread.

Young is a long way off from garnering a topic without getting bashed. Those that don't agree are still looking through the Rose (Bowl) colored glasses, and wrongfully so. This is the NFL.
You mean the league where he was rookie of the year?Where he helped lead the team to the playoffs?

Err...I didn't put his name in the topic.I merely posted the title of the article as the title of my thread.

Ah, well....time for bed.

Titans | Team still has some cap space leftSun, 9 Mar 2008 11:40:08 -0700Jim Wyatt, of the Tennessean, reports the Tennessee Titans have from $22 million to $25 million left under the salary cap.
Anyone know the amount of cap, if any, they will clear if they trade/cut pacman?

Curious as to what people think the Titans should be doing, instead of just "something".

At WR, Berrian and Stallworth were HORRIBLY overpaid, Moss wasn't coming. Bryant Johnson is barely above replacement level. Hackett is still out there, and obviously hes not drawing alot of interest.

At DE, Justin Smith was HORRIBLY overpaid; the Bengals gave Odom, with one 8 sack season, $12mil guaranteed.

Michael Turner? There are people out there who think the Titans should have paid Turner $16+ mil guaranteed to split time with Lendale White?

The Titans will fill their holes through the draft and the 2nd and 3rd tiers of Free Agency. The free agency period isnt even ONE WEEK OLD. Settle down.
There's no doubt these needs can be filled in the draft, one by one, but not all. They're lucky to get a solid player past round 4. Ya "can't" make it as if they can fill every need they have with the draft, just some.
If it were mid-April, I'd have some compassion for the people needlessly #####ing about the Titans' inactivity in the FA market, but its early March...this is the 6th day of the FA period. As a Titans fan they havent missed out on one player yet that I'd have wanted at the price they signed for. Josh Thomas, Jake Scott, D.J. Hackett, all solid vets with some to alot of starting experience who they can realistically sign for "good" prices.

Desperately overpaying players as the Jets, Browns, Bengals and Vikings have done is a good way to blow up your cap in the future; the Titans are smart enough to avoid that situation again.
The Titans have agreed to terms on a four-year deal for Colts guard Jake Scott, sources familiar with the situation said Sunday.

Scott visited Titans officials last week, and in recent days the team and the player's agent began making progress on a contract. Barring any last-minute complications, the deal could be completed as early as today, sources said.

Scott's deal will average just less than $5 million per year.

The addition of Scott gives the Titans a replacement for Jacob Bell, who signed with

St. Louis last week. It's also significant because Scott is leaving one of the Titans' biggest division rivals in the Colts.

Scott started 55 straight games for the Colts over the past three seasons, playing alongside Pro Bowl center Jeff Saturday and in front of quarterback Peyton Manning.

Efforts to reach Titans officials were unsuccessful Sunday night. Agent Ken Staninger, who represents Scott, also could not be reached for comment.

Scott, 26, will become the third player to join the Titans since the start of free agency. Last week the Titans signed former Falcons tight end Alge Crumpler and former Eagles and Titans defensive end Jevon Kearse.

Scott also had received interest from Denver and Houston, among others, but began zeroing in on the Titans after the two sides initially were far apart in contract talks.

In Tennessee, Scott will be reunited with two former Colts teammates, linebacker David Thornton and cornerback Nick Harper.

While still working on the deal for Scott, the Titans also hosted former Miami guard Rex Hadnot on Friday. But the Titans never made a contract offer to Hadnot.

With the Titans, Scott will slide into one starting spot on the offensive line, though the team also might have another opening as guard Benji Olson is expected to retire.

Last fall, Eugene Amano signed a multi-year extension with the team and would be in position to take over for Olson.

Scott has played in 60 career games for the Colts. He was a fifth-round draft pick out of Idaho in '04.
 Need to see the guaranteed money on this, but assuming its a 4yr - 18 mil deal, would guess he got 7-8 mil guaranteed, which would be a fine deal for a young solid starter.

Signing Scott is an excellent move. Amano, Stewart, Scott, Roos are all under 26 years old, IIRC. If they can get Harris in at Center after Mawae retires, they may be able to have a line that grows together and remains intact for 4 or 5 years, which is huge.

There are definitely still some needs, but Crumpler >>>> Troupe, Kearse >>>>> Odom, and Scott >> Bell. They need another DT, a little depth in the D backfield, and probably another receiver (or someone like Paul Williams to come on strong) but the moves they've made are very solid.

I don't agree with the last two, unless you are factoring in what they got paid. Id rather have Kearse and Scott for roughly $10 mil guaranteed than the other two at $25m, but talent wise both are at least a slight dropoff. Kearse hopefully won't be starting...if he is, then thats a major dropoff.

Kearse's play was hampered by injury and by playing standing up. If he can remain healthy (admittedly a big "if") then I think he's a definite upgrade at DE, especially since he'll be drawing single-teams.And I'm not sure I think that Bell is better than Scott.

Agreed that his play has been hampered by injury, but given his last 4-5 years of his career, I don't see any way that anyone can predict he'll say healthy and productive playing full-time...he'll be a situational, pass-rushing end, and hopefully won't be on the field for more than 20-25 plays a game. While I do like Scott, my worry is that, like other Indianapolis Colts' OLmen who have left and struggled elsewhere, Scott will have a hard time switching blocking schemes. Scott is a finesse player, which I worry isnt going to translate that well to our scheme. But I do like him as a player, I like that hes young, and I like his experience, so hopefully Munchak will figure out the best way to fit him into the Titans' scheme.

I don't think Scott is better than Bell, as some have alluded to I think one's a tough hardnosed G and the other is more finesse BUT the Titans seem to and...well I gotta apologize for some of my previous whining about their lack of moves. I suppose I was impatient

Which one is the "tough, hard-nosed G?" Bell was very much a finesse player at G.

I did not feel that The term finesse G is a tricky one, bit of a catch 22 as most Gs are asked to be finesse Gs during passing plays. I like a G that wants to steamroll a DT during a run. I think Bell does that while Scott tries to move the DT to the sideline.

To be fair, you can't judge either of their styles by what we've seen of them....Tennessee and Indy have very different blocking schemes that ask their linemen to do very different things. Bell plays "hard-nosed" because TEN asks their linemen too. Scott doesnt try to maul his guy, but just trap him and push him out of the play, which INDY asks their linemen to do. My concern about Scott was he came into the league as a very light guard, 6'4, 280, I believe, and I worry about him keeping enough weight on throughout a season having to play a different blocking scheme.
