I heard it on ESPN while on lunch and here is the ABC LINK

Joe Horn got his wish Tuesday when the Atlanta Falcons granted the receiver his release, his agent, Ralph Vitolo, said. Joe Horn got his wish Tuesday when the Atlanta Falcons granted the receiver his release, his agent, Ralph Vitolo, said. Horn, 36, had been asking to be released since the start of training camp. The Falcons are trying to get younger and Horn wanted to catch on with a team that could make a playoff run this year.

Trade talks between the Falcons and other teams had not been productive, so the Falcons decided to release Horn on Tuesday to give him an opportunity to land with another team before the start of the regular season. There also are financial factors that played into Atlanta's decision. Horn has $2.5 million in guarantees on his contract, and if he lands with another team, it's possible the Falcons will be offset for whatever he receives from another team.

Horn is entering his 13th NFL season. He has 603 career catches for 8,744 yards and 76 touchdowns in career stops that have included the Chiefs, Saints and Falcons. Last year, he played 12 games for the Falcons and caught 27 passes. After being notified Horn was released, Vitolo began to contact teams to shop his client.

Is there anyone that is going to be interested?
i think he still has some gas left in the tank. however, his attitude since leaving NOLA has been in the crapper. i don't know many coaches that have the patience or willingness to deal with a potential distraction. that said, Al Davis and the Raiders are probably preparing to dump a truckload of money in front of him.

Somebody that is close to Joe needs to tell him he's done...he obviously doesn't realize it...and he can't seem to hear it from the outside world.

Seriously, I could see Tampa Bay calling him up. Galloway will have someone to play BINGO with. Gruden loves to pick up guys dropped within the division. Horn just so happens to have been with New Orleans and Atlanta over the past two years.

Cowboys have about the veteran league minimum they can give him...and a chance at the Super Bowl...something that has eluded Mr. Horn.

Came here to post just this. I agree, with Austin going down, this might be a spot for him. Esp if Austin is closer to 6 weeks away rather than 4 or less.

Cowboys aren't interested. They'd bring back Terry Glenn before they'd sign Horn.

Trumpeting His Horn Out Of Atlanta

Posted By Andrew Brandt On August 13, 2008 @ 11:08 am In The Busine$$ of Football | 22 Comments

A story out of Atlanta this morning says Joe Horn desperately wants out of the Falcons. Horn told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution “I’m even contemplating giving some money back to further this thing along. “I’m ready to get it solved and move on. The longer I stay here, the worse it’s going to get.”

The story resonates here because a little over a year ago, I was working hard to sign Joe Horn for the Packers. The first week of free agency had passed and now that the truly crazy money had been spent, we were kicking the tires on the market. Horn’s name came up as someone that would be a good receiver and a presence in the locker room for a young team. Coach McCarthy knew him well from his days in New Orleans and started to recruit him.

Although Joe had some positives, there were some red flags. He certainly did not fit the profile of how we were building our team. He was an older receiver with some baggage whose fiery personality could be a problem with a young group of receivers, especially if he wasn’t playing.

While chasing Horn and dealing with his mild-mannered agent, Ralph Vitolo, I knew that although there was interest, we were not going to break the bank to sign Joe Horn. That was comforting, although when the Falcons got involved – they were close to his home, he was close with Mike Vick who was still their quarterback – I knew the stakes would be ratcheted up.

We were in it for a while, but the Falcons became more enamored with Joe financially, agreeing to give $7.5 million of guaranteed money for a 35 year-old receiver. Joe had 27 receptions for the Falcons last year, meaning that if there is a divorce – as it appears there will be – Horn will have received almost $280,000 in guaranteed money for each of those receptions.

This will not end well for Horn in Atlanta. He is now questioning why he is not practicing, as he feels ready to go. “I’m healthy,” he said. “It’s frustrating to sit to the side. I tweaked a little hamstring. It’s nothing major. I know I can still play, and I’m ready to go. It’s just frustrating sitting out here and dealing with this.”

Joe Horn will not sit quietly while discontented. That will not fit well with a new coach, new general manager and new atmosphere – sans Vick – in Atlanta. Horn’s name will be in the transaction section soon. The Falcons will likely try to trade him, and with no suitors, will eventually release him.

Our Horn non-deal of last year proves an adage in the business of football that should never be underestimated: some of the best deals are the ones that don’t get done.

I know Dallas seems to be in every conversation with a WR in it, but he definately would have to have some gas in the tank to get on Dallas. I highly doubt Joe Horn would ever be on Dallas now.

Joe Horn demanding a trade from the Falcons and a guaranteed salary of $2.5 million was the best evidence I've seen in a while of the disconnect between an athlete's perception and the reality of his current skills.

I read in a local paper (I think a local paper, anyway. Somewhere.) he was willing to relinquish most of his salary if they would release him outright.

He automatically relinquished his salary when he's released so I'm assuming he was willing to relinquish some of his signing bonus.

I thought I heard him say on ESPN that he wants a chance to go to the SB. But then why are the Dolphins, Titans, and Rams among his top choices? Maybe he should try to contact the Falcons? That might be his best chance at getting a job.

Prob after his phone did not ring. I am sure he kept having friends call him just to make sure the phone was still working. Reality hit and he realized he may not be very picky, in fact, he may just be lucky to have any team decide to take a look at him.

From Miami Herald

Although the agent for newly available wide receiver Joe Horn has contacted the Dolphins to gauge their potential interest in the former Falcons pass catcher, there's no reason to get over anxious about any imminent signing.

The agent, Ralph Vitolo, also contacted 31 other teams. Yes, every one other than the Falcons, who released Horn on Tuesday.

There is one reason to keep watch on Horn's decision, though. He has at least narrowed his top choices down, and Miami made the cut. Of course, there are also six other teams -- including the Cowboys, the Titans, the Jaguars, and the Rams, Vitolo said.

Vitolo has reached out to the Dolphins, but no conversations have taken place. Vitolo sent the team an e-mail and also left a message. He hopes to speak with Miami later tonight.

While Horn might (or might not) be completely sold on joining the Dolphins -- ''Miami is rebuilding, which is one negative,'' Vitolo said -- a potential match would be assuming the Dolphins would have any desire in signing a 36-year-old receiver.

Currently, although the team might lack star power at the position, Miami is more interested in getting younger. And it's not as if Horn's addition would make this team that much closer to a playoff run.

The Dolphins have also considered adding former Cowboys receiver Terry Glenn, but they abandoned those discussions when it became clear that Glenn's knees weren't anywhere near in good enough shape for him to even practice yet, a source said.

Vitolo said Horn is likely to sign with a team in the next three or four days.

Cowboys aren't interested. They'd bring back Terry Glenn before they'd sign Horn.
If Glenn would play for the minimum, then sure. But that's not what they were looking at. Horn is a better buy then what Glenn was looking to play for. Sounds like a good fit, actually.

The dude can still play, when healthy. His final year with the Saints (37-649-4 in only 9 games) is proof of that. It's not like he lost all his ability the second he signed with the Falcons, and considering how little he played last year I'm guessing his knees are probably in better shape than they've been in a long time.

I think he'd be a really good fit for the Titans. They have a bunch of receivers that can't get open. He could probably teach them a thing or two.

Oh, his phone was ringing. He just couldn't hear it because it was muffled by the goal post padding.

He couldn't beat out Michael Jenkins, Laurent Robinson, Adam Jennings and the one legged Brian Finneran. Sorry Joe, nobody wants you.

I'm gonna have to go ahead and disagree with you there...He hasn't had a decent fantasy game in 2 years, his hamstring is STILL bothering him a year after hurting it and now he's 36 years old. (and he played 10 games in 06, not 9)Remember this time last year when people thought Eric Moulds could still play?

:excited: I was thinking the same thing. Now Gruden can have the elder statesmen as WR bookends.

I was simply pointing out how distanced the Cowboys are as far as the idea of bringing Horn in.
