Joe West and Papelbon (1 Viewer)

Good for Joe West. As a Phillies fan, I'm glad he tossed him, even though he was already done. Papelbon's a doushe. And I love the fact that the Phillies issued a statement saying that they were not allowed to suspend him for onfield actions, but they stand by MLB's decision to suspend him.

Really, the Phils should move him to a set up man. If he complains, tough. Make his life hell. Can't wait for this guy to become someone else's problem. Or, even better, to get hit by a bus.

I just hope MLB doesn't suspend West.

The suspension helps the Phillies a bit in that it prevents him from getting any closer to his $13M option for 2016. The option vests if he finishes 100 games in 2014-15 and he's halfway there.

I would have been surprised he wasn't moved at the deadline if it was any other team but the Phillies. Papelbon has had an excellent year and there were several contenders with issues at the back of their bullpens. Philadelphia would have to eat a lot of his salary but that's always going to be the case. His trade value dropped over the weekend.

Cowboy Joe deserves a suspension for his singing.

Joe West and his 8 chins need to be suspended. Some of these old-school umps are just looking for a fight.

Papelbon is wrong too.
I disagree in this case. West clearly did not try to make a big deal out of it. He didn't do a big show, or song and dance. He quietly pointed at him and told him to leave. Papelbon came flying up the steps and got in his face as West was trying to go back to work. He side stepped once and Papelbon moved into his way. That's when West grabbed his shirt and moved him. West didn't want it to be a scene. Papelbon decided to take on the fans. Classless. West tossed him because he's protecting the fans.

I am a huge hater of umps and refs that try to become bigger than the game. Umps or refs should not be the stars. Ever. But in this case, I applaud West. I thought he handled this very appropriately.

Anyone have a link to video of the entire thing? All I can find is Papelbon's gesture, then West at the dugout ejecting him, then Papelbon already in West's face and West moving him. Seems to me the important part is how Papelbon got to West's face to begin with

Why should they do that? He was one of the best closers in all of baseball this year.
Phils aren't making the playoffs. And he's said he wants to be a closer. So why give him what he wants?
Philadelphia doesn't have any better options (and I'm a Ken Giles owner). As mentioned earlier, the only reason to demote him is to prevent the 2016 option from vesting. He'll also have more trade value as a rental if the new club doesn't have to worry about the option either.

If the players can't lay a hand on the umps (and I agree with that), then the umps can't be allowed to lay a hand on the players. It is that simple.

You can say that West did not want it to be a scene, but let's face it, Joe West wants everything to be a scene that involves him.
