Jon Beason Likely Out For The Year (1 Viewer)

Didn't see this mentioned anywhere, but Jon Beason is likely out for the year with a torn achilies. The official determination will be announced later today, but everyone in Carolina is talking about it like it's a forgone conclusion.

Not that it needed to be said, but this bumps opposing running backs even higher against Carolina, even though Dan Conner is a quality backup. If you play in an IDP league, I would grab Conner off the waiver wire this week, because he should be a good play.

Agree 100%, an already rough rush defense just got worse. People need to realize that this will impact the offense. How you might ask? If they can't get off the field, you won't see Steve Smith, Greg Oslon or anyone else from the Panthers as they sit on the bench watching long sustained drives on their defense.

Good injury spotlight Solorca.

 If a defense gets worse, it's easier to score on.

Yes, but it's also easier to control the ball and run time off the clock when the other team can't stop your run game.

Scoring does take longer than punting, though.

Sad news. Beason is an uberelite stud and the Panthers will miss him dearly (though I expect Thomas Davis, who has seemingly reclaimed his studly pre-ACL tear form, will explode as a surefire 3-down LB in his wake).

I agree to an extent, but Dan Conner is a pretty good MLB in his own right, and the LB core as a whole is solid. The downside is that the rest of the defense is poor and taking away Beason removes the one true Superstar on the defense(I like Charles Johnson, but he needs to prove he's at that level by performing highly for another season). I don't think the defense will be significantly worse without Beason, but I do believe it will be enough to bump running backs slightly against the Panthers. It will also affect the Panthers ability to blitz as heavily as they intended, because of Beason's speed. Conner is a more traditional linebacker and is lacking the playmaking ability of Beason...but he's still a starting level LB on most of the teams in the NFL, most likely.

Was Conner the one who kept having multiple concussions for a few years?
No, that was Dan Morgan. He was a sad case really, because he was the best LB in the league (in my mind) when healthy. A first ballot HOF level guy. He had 25 tackles in the Superbowl that the Panthers played in...still amazing to me.Interestingly enough, Conner wears the same #55.

When you can't stop the run to the tune of about 5-6ypc it creates long sustained drives for the opposition and you lose the TOP battle. That's what I am focusing on.

Not sure the defense is any worse. He hasn't exactly been a big contributor in recent years last year.
Last season was his first season in the NFL where he didn't have at least 106 solo tackles, and that was primarily because he was moved from the middle backer (MLB) to the weak side outside backer (WLB) due to other injuries in the Carolina LB corps.

This is an incredibly off-base statement. Beason is the leader of the Panther's defense and by far the best player on the team. Not to mention, he's had over 130 tackles each year since 2007, prior to last year when he was moved to OLB at points after Thomas Davis' injury (and a quick check on stats still shows him at a respectable 120).

I stand corrected. For some reason I thought that he had been oft-injured.
