I selected Stewart a few years back hoping that he would eventually become a premier back (even if he was still splitting time with Deangelo Williams). Since this will probably never happen with such a horrible pass offense, and now the Panthers are completely ignoring any trades for Deangelo, is it safe to assume that Stewart may not be the long term answer in Carolina?

Just because they won't trade him doesn't mean they're going to re-sign him. Patience.
I agree with that but doesn't it show commitment to a player if they are unwilling to even listen to trade offers? Deangelo and Stewart serve as a great one two punch especially since they have different running styles, however, unless they draft a top qb next year to take pressure off of the running game neither one will be fantasy reliable week in and week out.

Agreed. In fact, I'd be willing to bet there's a new GM & HC in Carolina next year who won't be willing to spend the $ on DWilly when the rest of the team is awful.

Never thought of this.... I understand your point but I think it would be hard to get rid of your best player in their prime.

John Fox loves having both DWill and JStew on his roster. Which would trouble me if I thought there was much of a chance that John Fox was still going to be the head coach of the Carolina Panthers 6 months from now.

He's arguably their best player (Steve Smith?) but RB's are more expendable when they're not all time great like Barry Sanders or Walter Peyton. Successful running games have far more to do with good line play and solid all-around offense than elite RB talent. It's why pretty average guys like Ryan Grant can put up great numbers; it's also why RB's don't command huge trade value in line with their talent level the way that WR's or DE's do. A new management team and coaching staff won't look at DW as their foundation for future success the way they would with a comparably talented QB. They'll cut payroll and rebuild the roster, starting with the lines if they're smart, and DW figures to be among the first to go as they retool. Stewart would be the obvious beneficiary, though he probably couldn't be expected to be more than a RB2 as they began the rebuilding process.

As an aside, I can't believe that Fox has lasted this long as their coach. I can't think of a less imaginative coach in the league. For example, I don't see why there isn't a more even split of carries between the two. It's not like they're a train rolling to a championship and riding DW all the way there. Why not keep him healthy at least by splitting carries?
