Jonathan Vilma (1 Viewer)

Vilma had a off year after moving inside in the 3-4 def.

Is there any reason to expect better numbers this year has anything changed ?

The only change thsat will affect Vilma so far is the addition of Coleman, DE from Dallas, to replace Kimo vonOelhoffen as the starter. vonO got old real fast, and was unable to handle a two gap assignment, he was being taken out by one offensive lineman consistantly, allowing the guard to get to Vilma. Hopefully Coleman will be able to play the two gap better than Kimo, and Vilma could have to shed fewer blocks.

Having said that, I still think Vilma will struggle to be a top twenty in this defensive scheme, unless something else changes. Last year I said he was a sell high candidate.... now, he's a #2 LB at best, and will likely remain so.

There's nothing new to help Vilma. Improving the DL will help, as Rovers notes, but Vilma's IDP value is hurt more by his alignment than anything else. The Jets aren't very happy with Eric Barton, but even if he's released, Vilma has invested so much time in learning the RILB spot that it's hard to believe they'll move him.

Best case scenario is the Jets drafting an undersized ILB in the draft and Vilma getting a shot at LILB somewhere down the line. There's only a very small percentage of that happening at this point. Vilma will be better this year as he adjusts to the scheme and the line improves, but I'm with Rovers -- he's a LB2 at absolute best (albeit a better one than Godfrey, Foote, Jackson, etc) in his current role.

I didn't see much hope for Vilma to return to a LB 1 this year but was surprised to see Aaron Rudnicki on 2/21 had Vilma ranked 8th and Sigmund had him at 11th on 3/25 in the dynasty rankings.

I understand dynasy means long term but I still don't see it anytime soon.

I was offered Vilma or Brooking in a trade and want to find a reason for hope for Vilma but realy can't.

I think everyone is right in the right context. The final evaluation depends heavily on the situation your team is in currently. Deep rosters, solid starters, time to wait? Vilma is one of the most talented backers in the league. This time last year, it seemed very unlikely that DJ Williams could find his way into an advantageous position. Suddenly Larry Coker and Al Wilson are gone and Williams could find his way back into the top fifteen. Vilma is talented enough to get 80 solos with some big plays from a questionable spot. The Shawne Merriman of weak side ILBs in a 3-4 so to speak. Back in a role that's good in the boxscore, he's probably a lock to get back into LB1 territory.Shallow rosters, weaker starters, few starting positions, playing for an 07 title? Vilma would be a much harder player to find room for if he's not already on your roster.Talent reigns in a long-term dynasty outlook, which is what I'd guess Aaron and Sig are basing their rankings on.

 FWIW, Magaw and Baker just acquired Vilma from me, so we should expect big things from him now.

off topic a little, but whats your take on Barton?
Has a date with the unemployment line soon as the Jets weren't very happy with his play at year's end. It'll depend on where he ends up, but I don't know that there are any open spots with IDP value that fit him right now.
