Looks like we will get our first true look at JStew on Saturday night against the Redskins. Last week, it was good to see him on the field, but his debut was tempered by the fact he only got 4 carries running with the 2nd team OL, and not a true indication of his abilities.

I am glad he will be splitting carries with DW to see how each guy does running with the first team OL. He has NOT been promoted to 1st team.... but will just be getting an opportunity to see how he does with the big dogs running in front of him. I am going to the game on Saturday and I will provide an update sometime on Sunday. I have a live draft with some FBGs here in Charlotte, so I can't report before our draft is over.

As a Panthers season ticket holder that does not own either guy.... I am hoping both knock the socks off the Redskins to provide us a very potent running game this year.

How are you preventing the guys in your league from watching the game?

I am sure they will be watching the game.... I just don't want to offer up my own thoughts and possibly miss an opportunity to draft one or both of them during our draft Sunday evening. When you play poker, you keep your cards close to the vest until it is time to lay them down. I simply do not want to show my hand, before it is time. I promise I will update this thread to give my thoughts.... it just has to be late Sunday or early Monday.

I am sure the other Carolina homers would be clueless about this situation unless PSULions spills the beans.I look forward to everyones honest assessment of Stewart and Williams performance. If your drafts won't be effected by such honesty of course.

Something to keep in mind watching the game this Saturday (and I say this both out of my interest as a 'Skins homer as well as a JStew owner) - the 'Skins this preseason have been playing the run on defense much better the pass, especially the starting defense. I wouldn't be surprised for Stewart to look relatively poor. Don't read too much into it would be my advice.

The biggest news about Saturday may be what we already know, that he's far enough along to get a start in what is typically regarded as the most important preseason game. It will also be interesting to watch how the Carolina o-line holds up against an active front.

I think Moose and Hackett will be out on Saturday. There is a better chance of Moose playing than Hackett, but neither has practiced this week. Fox said he hopes to have them back by Monday. Moose just has sore ribs, but Hackett has a hurt toe. Stewart has been returning kicks lately in practice with Robinson out, so I'm interested to see if he will do any of that in the game. I'm also looking forward to seeing him get some snaps with the first team. I think now that Stewart has been reassured by his dr that the soreness in his toe is only from scar tissue which will eventually break down, he has peace of mind, and any apprehensiveness he had about further hurting his toe is now gone. As a Panther fan, I'm hoping the tandem of Stewart and DeAngelo will work out great.

It's no secret that Hackett has a injury riddled past. I just hope his toe is feeling much better for games 1 and 2 while Smith is out. Of course it will be great if he feels good for the rest of the season. I think Hackett is very good when he is healthy. Being that Hackett is risky, I'm so glad the Panthers have Moose back. He is older, but he has great chemistry with Delhomme, and he can still catch and block, and he is also a great leader and teacher. Moose brings a lot.

Well, just got back from the game and it was awesome. Each guy played every other series. Each had a few nice runs of 8-11 yds apiece and then the highlight show started in the 2nd quarter. First it looked DW was going to take it home with a 32 yarder, but someone poked the ball around the 15 yard line, but SS was running right with him for blocking support... picks up the loose ball and take it in for the first TD of the game. Than it was Stewart's turn and after the 2nd or 3rd play of the drive he takes it to the left gets past a few tackles and breaks free around the 40... he got tripped around the 30, but kept his balance and took it to the house... the crowd went nuts. Next series... it was DW back in with the first team and a near repeat of the first long TD by Stewart, DW breaks through the line and gets into the secondary and gets away from the one guy and runs away from the last tackler to take it 60 yards. Towards the end of the third quarter DW had two nice runs and we were at 3rd and 1... a down and distance that we struggled with each of the last two years with Foster as the main RB. Stewart came in for the first time when it was DW series and pretty much everyone knew they were going to run it and sure enough... Stewart converted it and kept the drive alive and turned into the Delhomme to Rosario TD. Looks like he will be the short yardage guy and probably get the one yard TDs... giving him a little bit more value than DW, but while JStew deserves to be draft around where he is, DW looks like he will provide nice value for those at are fortunate enough to get him in the 6th or 7th round.

It looks like it is going to be a true committee at this point, with both players providing some good, but not great FF points, unless one got hurt and the other gets the extra touches. As a Panther homer... I hope this doesn't happen, but at least we have what looks to be two very good RBs.

Delhomme was a little rusty in the first quarter, but he started settling down and started making some nice throws. Steve Smith was great and made a couple nice catches including one that Fox had to challenge as the ref called him out of bounds, but he made a great grab and had his feet him. He finished is night with a nice short WR screen that he juked the defender and he was off to the races with a 30 + yard TD. Another nice bonus was the nice game that Dwayne Jarrett had. He looked good, ran some good routes and looked like he could step in as a #3 WR if needed should D.J. Hackett stay sidelined. IF the Panthers are able to run the ball as effectively as they did tonight... this team should have now problem putting points on the board and winning enough games to get back into the playoffs.

On the defensive side of the ball the Panthers D looks much improved from last year's version. Julius Peppers looks like the Peppers of old and dominating again. Got a sack, recovered two fumbles... one from Campbell when someone knocked the ball out of his hand and one that Betts tried a little too much to get more yards and got the ball knocked out. Made a great play stopping Portis for about a 3 or 4 yard loss. He looks like he would be an undervalued pick if you are in IDP leagues as his numbers from last year have dropped him down in the defensive rankings. Beason looked great too so he would be a great pick as well and will rack up big #s of tackles again this year.

It was Ricardo Colclough, but I didn't really get to see him much, as they only kicked off twice all game. Jason Carter took care of the punt return duties and they were smart and did not risk they key RBs on special teams.

He looked pretty good tonight. I just watched the highlights on NFL.com and I actually thought Stewart was Williams on his first big run of the night because he looked so shifty. If you believe in the importance of combine numbers, you should be a big fan of Jonathan Stewart. He had exceptional marks in the 40, vertical leap, and broad jump. It seems like the success rate of 1st round RB prospects with similar marks in those drills is very high.

so, to answer some guy's question in another thread, I'm not so sure this is a lock to be rbbc just because they split carries today.

hopefully, vet gets the nod while rookie sits and waits.

as a matter of fact, in the 3rd preseason game of '06, carolina's promising first round rookie rb, deangelo williams, split carries evenly w/foster -- each getting 9 carries, while the rest of the team totalled 8 more.

As a huge Oregon homer, I've watched this for the past couple of years. The guy not only is big and strong, but he's very much like a marsupial...he's fast. Seriously, if he stays healthy, that's one sick, potent rush offense the Panthers will have.

Panthers highlight vs. the Redskins

Take a look at the great push Peppers had against Samuels forcing the fumble by Campbell and even picking up the loose ball. Peppers looks to be back in a BIG way and looks to want to get paid this year as he is in his last year of his contract. Beason looked great too and Na'll Diggs also had a nice game on D. The DL had four sacks from four different players including Charles Johnson... who looks like he may be earning the other DE starter's job opposite Peppers.

The video also shows some of the other nice runs by both DW and JStew so you can see it was not only the TD highlights but some other nice runs that each of them had. Also check out the great catch by Dante Rosario on his TD. He is a name to remember and watch on the WW as I think he will be worth a pickup at some point when it becomes evident that he will play a role in the passing game. IMO he looks like he has surprassed Jeff King as the starter and combines nice speed and catches the ball well. Of course you can not watch this video without some Steve Smith so for those of you that have drafted him in the third down despite his 2 game suspension... sit back and enjoy what you will get starting game 3. The guy just flat out makes plays!

It s actually great for the Panthers . Both RB were absolutely amazing yesterday and this could mean a great season for the Panthers.

They will not need to pass the ball too much and control the game clock , with the defense they have i would not be surprised if they become Super Bowl contender.

Then next year they might trade Williams for a high draft pick and select a good QB.

Mendenhall is averaging 4.2 YPC in the preseason, so his performance isn't nearly as bad as you've been making it out to be.What's been interesting about this preseason is that all of these rookie backs look exactly like what they were billed as. Mendenhall looks like a rock with just enough mobility to not be a stiff. Johnson looks explosive, but very small. Stewart looks like the incredible hulk with moves. Felix looks like a nifty third down back with questionable power. Preseason performances have shifted my thinking on some of these guys slightly, but nothing has really surprised me so far.

As for McFadden, he looks fast with a very lean frame. I realize that you're high on him and that he was the first back taken, but there's a significant portion of this board that has always preferred Mendenhall and/or Stewart. I still think the lack of bulk might be a dealbreaker when it comes to his FF prospects. A picture is worth a thousand words:

I don't let a preseason game dictate anything, but I do use what I see to aide in how I rank players. I liked Stewart long before this game. The main thing I wanted to see was whether Stewart was having problems with his toe. He passed that test with flying colors. One thing I really liked in the video was Stewart stiff-arming the LB.

Stewart IMHO has the best combination of speed, strength and athleticism in his draft class. Obviously circumstances still factor in, and those attributes don't guarantee that he'll be the best fantasy back, but that run reinforced (against my Redskins :( ) that those attributes were no illusion. And I agree, the toe after reading the medical reports and seeing his performance is no longer a concern at all.
