Jones-Drew vs. Oakland (1 Viewer)

Just reading through today's fbg email, and was a little surprised by the comments on MJD. The tone was basically, if you have on your roster you have to start him this week. I am a big MJD fan, and really want to believe that he is in for a big game this weekend - I am just having a hard time understanding what he has done recently to warrant the "must start" label. I know the Raider defense is awful against the run - but will that equate to a big day for Jones-Drew or Taylor? It sure looks like Taylor is the guy in Jax right now.

My real question is for Jones-Drew owners...are you starting him this weekend, and if so, over whom?

he's been so unpredictable of late. any game he can go off or lay a zonker.

i have to choose between MJD, FWP, greg jennings, hines ward in a standard scoring league (my other starters are TJ Housh, Wayne and Jamal Lewis). right now i'm leaning towards jennings since he's been the hot play the second half of the season and favre and co have something to play for.

I have dropped MJD out of my rotation, largely due to the emergence of Ryan Grant. Grant had a disappointing game last week, although I am having a hard time sitting him for a guy that splits carries.

Well, Joseph Addai really tore it up against them, and Fred Taylor has really sucked as of late... so I mean, what's not to like?

You have the team that has given up the second most rushing yards on the season and the most rushing touchdowns going against the team with the most rushing attempts, second most rushing yards, and fourth most rushing touchdowns. There are very few players who I would start ahead of either MJD or Fred Taylor this week.

CHI/DEN don't count?

Not sayin' you're wrong, but Addai only had, I think, 15 or 16 carries...and 2 or 3 were on the final drive when they were in clock killing mode. Not sure why that was, I didn't see the game. But I just thought it was odd considering how bad Oakland has been getting burned this year in this phase of the game. Indy just had trouble getting the offense going by the sound of it, but again...I can't really say for sure.

You really think 79 yards and a touchdown by Cedric Benson can be counted as a good game? The most recent Den game was a solid yardage output but they did give up two rushing TDs.In the first Den game in addition to Henry's 128 yards, Cecil Sapp scored on a short yardage TD and Selvin young had 43 yards rushing. So, a grand total of 177 yards rushing and 1 touchdown.

Oakland really did stone the Colts rushing game. In reality their defensive line played out of their mind this game. If they had been remotely decent against the run this year I would say they were just rounding into shape. But, they have been so bad that I am willing to write of last week as a one game aberration.

He's no must start.

In respect to FBG's, they've been slightly off on Fred Taylor. Again last week, the last report I saw they had Fred Taylor again behind MJD in the RB rankings. I usually think long and hard when I have to go against FBG's as I figure they must have a reason for thinking what they're thinking but there's no denying that Fred Taylor is the top back in Jax right now.

I didn't see this email or whatever report but if there's a MUST start coming out of JAX, it's not MJD, it's Fred Taylor. I have both and there's no way I'm sitting Fred Taylor for Maurice Jones. If I would have done that this week, I would have lost. Is there a chance Maurice Jones out produces Fred, sure there is but I'm going on what we've seen the last month.

Jax is playing well and they're going to keep doing what's gotten them there, and that's run Fred Taylor

Actually I was arguing that the 76 yards game by CHI and the 46 yard game by DEN were bad running games by CHI and DEN... and they were... even if TDs were scored... TDs are so hard to predict, whereas a good back gets yardage no matter what against bad defenses, and they held Henry to 46 yards and Benson (ok the term good back doesn't apply here) failed to break 100 when decent backs were getting 150+I guess the thing is, OAK's run defense is not great, but it's not as bad as some make t out to be either... and if I had to pick an RB to start from JAX it would be Taylor, not MJD. MJD just doesn't get enough opportunities, and you need him to break a big play to be a decent start. He has the ability no doubt, but not the opportunity.

concur.People are downplaying the Raider run D.It ain't that bad these days.

Jags :lmao: and the team is doing whatever it takes to get Freddy into Pro Bowl and league-wide recognition. MJD will be change of pace rest of regular season, so if you have another option start him instead of MJD. my

I heard a discussion on NFL sirius the other day, talking about teams that are terrible and out of contention (like oakland). They said that teams in this situation are likely to play really tough at home - looking to give their fans something - some reason to cheer. On the road, however, they are more likely to mail it in and not give max effort.

This kinda makes sense to me, and I think it holds - Miami got a win at home, SF beating Cinci, oakland playing the Colts tough, etc. Obviously, it doesn't hold true 100 % of the time.

if the question is should one start a RB at home vs oakland, i think the answer should be YES despite what Addai did last week.

so the next question of MJD vs Fred - well, that's a different matter all-together.

Fred over 100 for the last 4 weeks and 3 TD's in that span. I'm going for Fred...

MJD is a good play this weekend...I question his "must-start" status, however. I agree that Freddy is probably a better play. Jones has been fairly consistent with his touches, and wouldn't suspect that to change against the Raiders. Look for 11-14 carries and 2-5 receptions. He is a home run threat, and the question is will he hit a home run on one of those opportunities. Quite honestly, that is too risky for me in my first Fantasy Super Bowl. I sent MJD to the bench once I landed Ryan Grant from the waiver wire. The combination of Grant's low yardage total, and the inspired play of the Bears defense last night had me rethinking this decision....but I don't think I can pull the trigger.

Very nice little tidbit. Thanks.

 Also, it's not just a road game, but about as far of a trip as can be made in the NFL. They will be on a plane longer than the game will last. I don't have any stats on it, but just from observations...unless a team is really well coached, they tend to falter on such long road trips.I expect Jax to absolutely roll over Oakland from start to finish in this game and run it down their throats.A new coach + out of the playoffs + a cross-country road trip = uninspired footballThey went to Miami this year and won (Culpepper's 5 TD game) but gave up over 200 total yards a TD to Ronnie Brown.

I've got both Jags and both Broncos on my roster. Last week I started both Broncos because the Jags were facing the 'great' Steelers run defense.

This week, I gotta start both Jags against the lowly Oakland run defense.

In the championship and I have absolutely no intention of starting him. In fact, I might cut him to see if I can get the other owner to pick up and start him.
