To make room for Jay Bruce and pick up another starting pitcher that their system couldn't provide. I guess his L/R splits suppressed his value (18 of his 19 hrs last year came off RH pitching) but he went from a great offensive park to an awesome one. Hamilton is going to hit 30 bombs this year if he can stay healthyStill don't know why the Reds traded him.
How many quality lefthanders are their in the AL West though? Outside of Bedard and Washburn? I can't think of a single solid one on anahiem or oakland. Darren Oliver is a LH thrower, not exactly stud material. I think he got on base twice (well at least once) vs. Bedard. Remember in the small division we play these teams 19 times each.Putz is a righty, I was un-too surprised to see that blast last night. Just don't expect similar late inning results against southpaws.
Bruce was probably part of the reason -- but the team certainly could have moved Junior or Dunn to make room for both, though it's obviously questionable whether they could have gotten a pitcher with Volquez' upside. The insider line is that the team was nervous about his past and recent injury history and that Hamilton wasn't great in the clubhouse -- needed babysitting, often begged out of the lineup, etc. Whether that argument holds any weight or not is questionable, too.And they sent Bruce to AAA anyhow, as well as benching Votto to start the year. It'll be nice to start 10-19 with Hatteberg and Patterson and then decide they're worth the playing time. But that's for another thread. To make room for Jay Bruce and pick up another starting pitcher that their system couldn't provide. ouchHamilton hit .222 and struck out 29 times in 72 at bats against lefties (only 3 XBH)...and there were not a lot of quality lefties in the NL Central either.Still, not shabby considering he had 100 at bats in the last 5 years and 99% of the guys throwing you BP are going to be RH pitchers. He crushed righties with a .314 average and a 1.028 OPS last year.19 HRs in under 300 at bats even with the LHP struggles. Sick. If the Reds are stupid for trading him, what does that make the Rays for exposing him to the Rule V draft in order to keep Tomas Perez![]()
Exactly, he just doesn't see pitches from lefties well...not yet anyway. I have him in two leagues and will immediately insert him into the lineup whenever he's up against a righty no matter who I have to bench, like I did last night and am doing today (Corey Hart, sorry, Markakis has a more SB friendly matchup). Lefties though? Well, I started Matt Diaz over him in one of my league's and Michael Bourn in the other on opening day. That should give you an idea of how much faith I am putting into him against lefties. That is subject to change over time, but he needs to prove it to me first. I'd try to stream someone to start over him if he had a lefty matchup and I have an extra OF spot open due to day's off.Hamilton hit .222 and struck out 29 times in 72 at bats against lefties (only 3 XBH)...and there were not a lot of quality lefties in the NL Central either.
They already had Cueto on the farm from a previous draft. They got Volquez and lefty minor league reliever Danny Ray Herreradid the reds get volquez and cueto for him?

With the empty base and Bradley out tonight he should have walked him. I know Murphy's been playing well this year but would you rather face him and the winning run on 1st or Hamilton as the winning run at the plate? No brainer if you ask me.Unreal. That's not the mentality of a premier closer. Same reason Mariano didn't walk Manny with 1st base open on Sunday. With the empty base and Bradley out tonight he should have walked him. Right, he drilled him (for the 3rd time in the game) instead. I'm not saying K Rod should have given him an intentional pass (I worded my last post poorly), but he shouldn't have given him anything to hit. That was a slow, fat gopher across the center of the plate he served up for Hamilton, dumb mistake. That's not the mentality of a premier closer. My wife was watching the game and after Young steals on the crane kick delivery of KRod she's like "now what?" once the count got to 3-1. I said that the next pitch would not get within a foot of the plate and they'd start with a fresh count on Murphy. I think it was a curve ball that just hung out there. (Don't hit me if I'm wrong about that I'm mostly guessing). It was so low that I was worried that someone would get to it, but the air held it up.Right, he drilled him (for the 3rd time in the game) instead. We must be talking about different games, maybe the one I am referring to was Saturday's game? Rivera plunked Man Ram and Youk back to back to load the bases with nobody out, when he hit Manny 1st base was open.Right, he drilled him (for the 3rd time in the game) instead. That's not the mentality of a premier closer. He watched three consecutive strikes sail past him without ever moving the bat off his shoulder.
No hyperbole or shtick... The Rays could have had a dynasty on their hands if they had kept him.####

From a talented underachieving drug addict who needs a couple more years (minimum) in the minors, to the missing link that would've tied the Tampa Dynasty together. Starting to lose board cred with all this flip flopping, Cap.

They have the best record in baseball, the best minor-league system and I was referring to if they kept Hamilton, who it could be argued is one of the best 1-2 hitters in the game right now. He would also be playing in their biggest lineup hole. Not really a stretch. But then again, you're the guy who was going on about the impending Chicago Bulls dynasty a year ago.LOLSo bitterNo hyperbole or shtick...
