Julius Jones Update Thread (1 Viewer)

anybody know who took the majority of the 1st team reps today?
Updating a previous report, Clarence E. Hill Jr., of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, reports Dallas Cowboys RB Tyson Thompson is receiving the majority of first-team practice reps this week in place of injured RB Julius Jones (ankle) and could start during Week 6 if Jones were unable to play. "I feel like I am getting more confidence and, hopefully, that is the same with coach (Bill) Parcells," Thompson said. "We are trying to maintain without Julius. Hopefully, he will be ready. But anything I can do to help the team is great. I am looking forward to the opportunity to show what I can do."

If JJ doesn't play this weekend, how long will he be out for?If not this weekend, will he be able to play next weekend or out for a couple more weeks?Any ideas?ThanksLooking to trade for him while he's injured

High ankle sprain. I'm guessing four weeks would be the worst case scenario. Since he has been walking around without crutches and riding the stationary bike I wouldn't expect him to miss more than one or two. If you have the roster space get him.

TT will be the starter this weekend.
Thanks Big Tex. I always look forward to your Cowboy updates. Thanks to you I gobbled up JJ last year before he came back after his injury and I haven't looked back since. This tells me how I need to handle JJ for sure this weekend. He'll sit for me. Actually I hope for sure he sits b/c I need him for the playoff run.

i added TT off the ww but now im constantly waiting for an update from dallas to see if jj i definetly sitting out this week.

The more important question (for me, anyway) is "how long will JJ be out?" because I need to add some long-term depth and not a 1-week temp. BY all accounts, it doesn't sound like JJ's injury is going to keep him out for long. Well, unless reinjured, that is...

going by the title of the thread, I was expecting to see an update on Julius Jones.

killing me softly...I have to choose from JJ, Tyson or Benson...and up to today we still have no clue who's going to play....

BigTexand JJ info, got to take it is as fact.
Yep. His JJ info was gold last year! I luckily grabbed Thompson for $3 last week just on a hunch, and feeling pretty good about that move right now. Hate to see a player like Jones out though.

According to Parcells press conference followed by Mickey Spagnola and crew, it sounds like there very well may be a RBBC with all the RBs on the roster. Thompson may start, but it sounded like the carries will be fairly equally split between Thompson, Thomas, and even Barber. Might be something you'd want to avoid. If you can't avoid Dallas RBs, the best chance for a home run is TT with his break away speed. Personally I would rather play Pearman against the tough Steelers D if he starts than any of them.

Tidbits from the Friday AM Parcells press conference:1) He won't announce who will start until game time.2) He has never started a RB who did not practice during the week. He further added that JJ is still young enough that he would have reservations about starting him without having practiced during the week.3) He knows that if TT plays, he will make mistakes.4) He affirmed that Barber is likely to be in the mix.Now the conference occurred before the Friday practice. But assuming JJ does not practice today, I expect him to be out against the Giants. I still believe that TT gets the start and majority of the carries. Barber will be the third down guy. Atrain in for a few series.I further believe that the Giants will play a lot of 2 deep zone. Their starting corner is out. Such a defense would likely hurt Glenn, help Witten, and help the running game. Neutral or hurt Keyshawn. Given all of this, I expect TT to have a pretty good game.We will know more tomorrow based on whether JJ practiced today or not.

J.J. did not practice again on Friday.lJONES SITS FRIDAY; NOT RULED OUT; LAST-MINUTE DECISION LIKELY... . Compiled by FootballDiehards Editor Bob Harris Bob Harris | Posted Friday October 14, 2005 @ 13:10 PT According to Dallas Morning News staff writer Matt Mosley, Julius Jones missed practice for the third straight day Friday with a left high ankle sprain, but head coach Bill Parcells stopped short of ruling him out for Sunday's game against the Giants."I'm just going to wait to the last minute," Parcells said. "There's no use in not taking advantage of all your time."Mosley went on to advise readers that Jones spent the first part of Friday's practice doing conditioning work with trainer Britt Brown. If he can't go Sunday, rookie Tyson Thompson will probably replace him."I probably wouldn't be too comfortable with his experience level without practicing," Parcells said of Jones. "I think generally speaking, players need to practice some to have a chance at success. Now there are exceptions. But generally speaking, I would like to have a player practice before he plays."Parcells said he's never played a running back who didn't practice at least once in the week leading up to a game.Parcells admitted that Thompson might hit the hole a little faster than Jones, but added, "it's not always the right hole."Also according to Mosley, Anthony Thomas has expressed his displeasure about his lack of playing time, but with Jones injured, his time may be coming."We're going to need these guys," Parcells said when asked about Thomas. "Just look at last week's results around the league on the running back position. This position is a very, very difficult position to sustain."

So do you guys expect JJ to just miss this week (assuming he does)? Do you think he will be back next week since he is questionable for this one?

Personally No. Nothing other than reading between the lines on my part though. He has not practiced all week. High ankle sprains don't heal fast -- and what does that mean anyway: "heal fast." The fact that he hasn't participated in a single football movement/activity since last Sunday tells me he's hurt the ankle pretty good. Of course you won't get Tuna to admit Jones' status week in and week out, that will be a ploy of his. :lmao:

Only a leak or unnamed source can bust this story out.

I fully expect for Fanball, Rotoworld, Rototimes, ESPN, whatever, to come up with the report that "Julius Jones' injury is worse than originally feared." :o

I expect him to be out a minimum of two weeks.

I expect him to be out a minimum of two weeks.
I'm inclined to agree with this sentiment.Parcells is simply playing it close to the vest, keeping the Giants guessing.

Rushing JJ back would be a mistake. He won't play this week, I am convinced. The replacements will do well enough that they will rest him again at Seattle, and he can return for the home game against the Cards before the bye.

Now, should the replacements suck up the joint, he could see action next week. But I;d rather see a heavy dose of Thompson this week.

BIAS: Tyson Thompson dynasty owner.

RB decision delayed

Parcells likely to make call on running back's status at game time

10:05 PM CDT on Friday, October 14, 2005

By JEAN-JACQUES TAYLOR / The Dallas Morning News

IRVING – Running back Julius Jones missed his third consecutive practice with a high ankle sprain, though coach Bill Parcells said Jones continues to improve.

Jones spent much of Friday's practice doing rehabilitation work with associate trainer Britt Brown. Parcells doesn't like to use players who haven't practiced because he believes football is a game of repetition, and players who don't practice are more prone to make mistakes.

Parcells said he's never played a running back who didn't practice, but he refused to rule Jones out for Sunday's game against the Giants.

"I'm just gonna wait until the last minute," Parcells said. "He's been keeping up with the game plan. I probably wouldn't be too comfortable with his experience level without practicing.

"I think generally speaking, players need to practice some to have a chance to succeed. Now there are exceptions."

If Jones doesn't play, rookie Tyson Thompson probably will start. He carried 20 times for 75 yards in the second half of last week's win over Philadelphia.

"He is what he is," Parcells said of Thompson. "It's going to be a little less than perfect no matter what, so you have to accept that if you're going to play him."

Anthony Thomas and Marion Barber are expected to have larger roles if Jones can't play.
There are a couple separate threads about Thompson and Jones, so I thought I'd just create a new one for this update. From what I can tell, this hasn't been posted yet.

With 30+ posts on this subject and not one bit of factual information ..... Only speculation, hunches, and gut feelings .... this shows me there is no info out there on his injury and perhaps not enough of an injury at all. If he was injured we would know more then what WE SAW him doing on the sideline in the second qtr of last weeks game.

I want to offer my appologies for my mis-read of the Dallas backfield situation. All week long, I expected TT to be the main guy. He obviously wasnt against the Giants. What that tells me is that Parcells doesn't trust him yet. In a close game, his inconsistency overshadowed his explosiveness in Parcells' mind. Live and learn.

A-Train sucked yesterday. If Jones is out again next week, who gets the carries? If Jones plays next week, likely not at 100%, who backs him up, since Thomas cannot play special teams?

Well, at least I was around to voice my opinion to the contrary and boost A-Train :bag:

It's so hard to tell with Parcells.

People also need to realize that Dallas is a pass-first team right now, despite Parcells history as a run-heavy guy. They have the weapons to move the ball on 1st down in the air, and they'll use that to set up the run. Also, with the way the offensive line run-blocked yesterday (pretty poor) I wouldn't expect many backs to do much better than any of the Dallas runners.

In Parcells' press conference today, he said that TT made 3 mental errors in 12 plays. Neither Barber nor Thomas made a mental error.

Any initial word on JJ playing this week?
Not really much, but I did catch this quote in a cowboys article. Not sure what (if anything) to read into it. I don't think we'll know much until Wednesday.
Parcells said he wasn’t sure whether linebacker Dat Nguyen and running back Julius Jones would practice Wednesday.

“I’m going to wait my turn, wait till I’m healthy, and I’ll be out there,” Jones said after the game Sunday.
