Jury Duty - Anyone Ever Forget? (1 Viewer)

The General

Long story short I'm an idiot and somehow forgot this was on Monday (November 2) until this morning. In my state you can defer online which I just did but it's not clear as to weekend hours, processing, etc. so who knows when that gets done.

I have to go on a business trip Monday there is no getting around that.

I can't be the only person this has happened to. Help me avoid jail time people. Tell me it will be OK, I am too delicate for prison.

Probably already a bench warrant out for your arrest.

On the inside, from what I understand you need to find the biggest boyfriend available the first day or be prepared to be a human garbage can. Good luck in advance.

Last year my wife completely forgot about her jury duty. She called and apologized for the mistake. They basically said no big deal and within 2 weeks, sent her a new summons.

Thanks. This is what I like to hear.

Reading more it sounds like this is what happens to the majority of people who follow up. Understandably the official court sites don't offer up this info so all the stuff I'm finding online is word of mouth.

Your avatar combined with the prison advice is freaking me out a little.

on a serious note i went once and registered as soon as i got to the court house ...waited to be called ...wasnt picked for the first trial and they told us to go eat and come back in 2 hours to see if we would be needed for a second trial...well i just left and drove home ...i received a letter a few weeks later thanking me .....if i was to get called again i think i would just go in and fill out the paper work like im supposed to ...then leave ...im betting they wont even notice

You're bragging about this?

Probably would have gotten out of jury duty in the first place if I worked in the court.
Now I can't tell if you are messing with me.

Reading online I did see some people say that their judge issued warrants for each person that wasn't at the role call during jury summons process...which I won't be at because I'll be on a plane.

Nice knowing you all.

You'll likely be okay, but I'd recommend calling first thing Monday morning and trying to speak to somebody in the clerk's office. I'd anticipate another summons then for the next round of jurors.

Thanks, I will do this. What little info I can actually discern from the online site is that they will email me back in 24 hours. Not sure if that includes weekends. Best case is I get an email by tomorrow saying I'm good and they have accepted my new deferral date. Would be shocked if that happens though.

Hope it's a one way ticket.

I always "forget." For years I have thrown the notice away. I get one every 2 years. If I am every called on it, which after 20 years I'd be surprised, I could always say it must have accidentally went to the trash as do most of the junk in the post box. If they ever make it so it's certified mail then I'll comply.

 Nope. I picture cops waiting for me at the gate when I return.

Sounds like I may be seeing you in cell block D. Hopefully I'll have learned to make a proper shiv and can teach you the ropes.

You're a great American.

I am. You wouldn't want me on a jury if you were the defendant. So I'm doing us all a favor and saving everyone time in having me go in only to dismiss me. :D

Unless it's automated, I can't imagine anything happening over the weekend.

As somebody who often depends on the objectivity and honesty of jurors to decide the fate of my client, CurlyNight is absolutely spot on here. While it's definitely  to hear a citizen trying to skirt jury duty - from a legal perspective we don't want that person anyway. Heck, given CurlyNight's comments in the Jodi Arias thread, she'd definitely be somebody I would not ever want anywhere near a jury since there'd be about a zero percent chance of her being fair and impartial. So, she's not wrong here: she's doing the system a huge favor here by exercising her self-awareness and, possibly, saving a defense attorney a strike.

Want to know the worst jurors ever? The ones with beliefs akin to CurlyNight's, but who show up and essentially sandbag jury selection by not disclosing a damn thing about themselves to let the parties know that they have biases or, worse yet, agendas and wind up getting on. #### those clowns.

Well my verdict did pan out, you know, the one I had from the first minute of the trial? I could have saved the tax payers 5 months of $ flying out the door for nothing. :)

I've got jury duty on the 23rd. Pretty sure they won't need me the week of Thanksgiving but I'm going. I'd like to sit on a jury but highly doubt I ever will.

Wow, it's worse than I thought. Did you sleep through history and government classes?

Actually, I wasn't living in the US when it was mandatory to take back when- and never took it in university. So it's much worse than you thought. :D And, I slept through all my classes..

So you're perfectly OK with enjoying the rights of an American citizen but not fulfilling one of the responsibilities?

I'm not proud but forgot/ignored last 2-3 summons. Don't have time. When I'm retired I'll do it weekly if needed. Hope I don't end up on Lockup Raw
