K.C. Chiefs Brass (1 Viewer)

When G.M. Scott Pioli stepped out of the comfy confines of the 3-time Super Bowl Champion New England Patriots front office to take over in K.C., optimism was born again (I assume) in the Chief Tribe, or fanbase/followers. But from this outsider's perspective, I have to question plenty of decisions and how you're building here.

Acquiring Matt Cassel was not a bad idea, per se, but granting him a hefty, long-term contract extension without much of a track record was downright stupid. His so-called "breakout" season was pretty much overblown as the offense was tailor-made for any decent QB to enjoy a modicum of success. It's not like Cassel set the world on fire, he was above average. For one, he took way too many sacks and failed to truly connect with one of the most deadliest WRs to ever play the game. Appeared a bit gun-shy to pull the trigger and let it fly to Moss who is known to make great catches in tight coverage. Yet, the new K.C. brass opens up the wallet as if this kid was the 2nd coming of Brady or Manning. Delusional.

Next, why bring a tired vet (Vrabel) along with him to a rebuilding team. Do you think he'd really be motivated to play for a team in steep rebuilding transition? Let's not even discuss Zach Thomas who was over-the-hill about 5 years ago.

Bobby Engram, Amani Toomer, Jehrame Urban, and Chris Chambers are the best you can do for WR acquisitions? You gotta be kidding me????

Thomas Jones signed at 33 years old? For how much $$$, you say? And he's going to help you win how many more games with his 3.4 ypc? With Jamaal Charles in tow, why not simply draft a guy like Anthony Dixon in the 5th-6th Rd as an inside thumper. A player like this would come dirt cheap and still have room to grow. While TJ, for as great as he's been, shouldn't be on a ultra-young, re-building team. Save the cap space or use iy on some younger, soon-to-be FAs like Addai, DeAngelo, Choice, or others, even other positions like O-Line.

INTERNAL PERSONNEL MOVES

Let's let go of life-long Chief and future HOFer Tony Gonzalez. Yeah, I get it, you're actually doing him a favor in releasing him so that he can go play on a contender in his last couple of seasons. OK, fine. With the position becoming more influential all across the league, have you filled the huge void left at TE since then? (As Chiefs fans start typing in the name Tony Moaki............) C'mon!

You let Bernard Pollard, a fine up-and-coming young Safety.......infamous for the season--ending "low-blow" on Tom Brady in the 2008 season opener....go for essentially nothing. Why not keep this guy? He and Eric Berry sure would be one of, if not clearly the clear-cut, best safety tandems in the NFL today. Instead, he's off to Houston in the midst of making some Pro Bowls in the coming years.

Tyler Thigpen, yeah, not a world-beater, but just maybe good enough to unseat Cassel and Croyle for the starting job. In ushering him out the door, this looks like a manuever to erase a potential QB controversy which would shed even more light on the Cassel mistake.

Demotion of Derrick Johnson. Every time I've seen the Chiefs play, seems like this guy makes a ton of plays to me. Whatever the problem is, do you really have that many better options that he can't start somewhere along the foursome (LBs)?

DRAFT

I actually liked the Glenn Dorsey pick at the time, but hey, it's not looking good right now. Ditto Brandon Albert, these guys both have some ability, but they better get it going soon. Tyson Jackson, what a horrible reach that was, and I thought so at the time. Michael Crabtree anyone. Sanchez (if you hadn't signed Cassel to big money) anyone........Hello?

OK, is it all bad there in KC Land. Well, no. Berry will be a superstar. Charles is outstanding, and looks like Bowe could emerge this year and fulfill his promise. Brandon Flowers is dandy. McCluster just might add some sizzle, and Weis could make a difference. But overall, this new regime has been very subpar in building up this proud franchise given all their resources (numerous draft picks, including many high ones).

Just my 2c

I thought Dorsey and Albert were Peterson picks.

Apparently there is a limit on the number of quote boxes you can use...?

The contract was front set up so if he doesn't find his footing he can be cut after this year he could be released without much penalty. So its not really as long term as it seems on the surface.Next, why bring a tired vet (Vrabel) along with him to a rebuilding team. That was the first year they were going to transition to the 3-4 D. Why not bring in a guy who is a leader and can offer some on the field coaching?

Bobby Engram, Amani Toomer, Jehrame Urban, and Chris Chambers are the best you can do for WR acquisitions? You gotta be kidding me????

Who else would have been available for acquisition during that time with out trading? throw a bunch of ##### against a wall and see what sticks. Chris Chambers stuck in a serviceable fashion.

For whatever reason the mgmt loves "leaders". Most of the guys they draft are team captains. They obviously wanted to get a complement to JC in 2010, can't do that waiting for the 2011 FA class.INTERNAL PERSONNEL MOVES

Business I guess. Over a decade of Pro Bowl/HOF performances from him and still able to get a mid-second round selection at the end of it (Javier Arenas).

There was more going on here than just his talent. Apparently he was a huge pain in the ### and they decided to make an example of him. His play style seems to work better in HOU D than it did in KC. And for all the big hits he made, he whiffed on two.
Tyler Thigpen, yeah, not a world-beater, but just maybe good enough to unseat Cassel and Croyle for the starting job. In ushering him out the door, this looks like a manuever to erase a potential QB controversy which would shed even more light on the Cassel mistake.
Probably. Croyle is too brittle to be more than a backup for two quarters in a game. I'm not sure why Thiggy was shipped out.Watch DJ play a little more closely. He often tries to avoid blocks instead of taking them on, and usually ends up behind the play (he'll usually 'pile on' at the end of a play). But yes he does have good playmaking ability at times, just not consistently.

I wouldn't say they've had numerous draft picks. They've had a 3rd and a 5th overall. In 2009 they didn't have a second round pick, and in 2010 they had two. They've had just as many as most franchises. Denver, on the other hand....

Yes 2008 was the last CP/Herm draft. Dorsey @ #5 and B Albert at I think #15. They had three third round picks that year as well (from the Jared Allen trade) which became Dejuan Morgan, Jamaal Charles, and Brad Cottam.

OK. My bad, then they get a pass for those picks. Charles was an excellent pick by C-Pete and those guys though. Tremendous 3rd Rd value.

the didn't pay anything for those veteran WR's so I'm not sure how you can call them bad investments. Well maybe they overpaid for Chambers but when they got him after his release from SD he looked decent so it was somewhat justifiable.

I didn't like the Thomas Jones signing when they already had a cheap inside thumper on the roster in Jackie Battle. Why not see what he had since you're a rebuilding team anyways? Now he hasn't even been tendered so maybe they don't like him. Guy has good size and good speed, not sure why he hasn't panned out other than not having an opportunity

Obvious that Gonzo has lost a step and they may have gotten rid of him at the right time as he was likely overpaid with his new contract. Due near 8 million next season. Javier Arenas (who they drafted with pick they acquired, right?) should have an even greater impact in the return game and be a quality nickel corner in years to come

just noticed this is from a year ago so I'm not going to go on other than saying they have something going in KC. Team seems to be on the upward swing and I like what they are doing. Haley has a different way of motivating players, but he seems to be getting the team to rally behind him. They have one of the more underrated secondaries in the league and are working on building up that front 7. The offense has turned it around and Baldwin should only help open up things for everyone else on offense including Cassell who you would think could take even more strides going into year 3 with KC
