Katrina (2 Viewers)

Had this storm hit to the west of New Orleans, 30,000 people probably would have died.

Apparently, you know nothing about the power of hurricanes.

Think before you open your trap.
Serious question - can someone explain this to me? Are there more people in that region? Could they not have been evacuated for some reason? Serious question.

some people don't have cars and couldn't evacuate. the mayor asked grayhound and amtrak to evacuate people, but there was no respnse

Friend of mine has a gf whose mom was required to stay at the hospital as a department head in N.O. Plenty of friends scattered from Gulf Shores all the way to N.O. I think everyone got out, but I'm sure there's going to be plenty of #### to clean-up. I have a feeling my earlier weekend plans are dead now.

I think he meant that the area that gets the worst of a hurricane is the area just north east of the eye. So, if the hurricane had come west of New Orleans, that city would have gotten the absolute worst of it.
Where does the 30,000 deaths number come from?Is that how many people stayed behind in the city, and is the assumption that they all would have died if the city had experienced a direct hit?

I don't understand why everyone is getting so pissy in here anyway. I'd dare say that most of the people getting pissed at some of the comments have no ####### connection to the area anyway. This is a major catastrophic event, but there is not one thing that can be done about it happening. Better to add some levity to a terrible situation because the hard part is still to come.#### and ride it out. Nothing you can do about it now.

I don't understand why we don't just ask people in China where the landfall will be considering they're what, 10 hours ahead of us?
Is this supposed to be funny?
Heck, I gave it a try. Mood is so heavy and serious in this thread.
I thought it was funny. Lighten up Francis. It's a storm. Nobody died yet and nobody may die at all. There is far more crude joking on this board about bad things that have already happened.
By this same logic, it would've still been OK to joke about 9/11 as the first plane was headed towards the WTC. Good thinking here.
 His joke was not in poor taste in any way, it was a silly joke to lighten the mood.

This is a rain storm and it is really unfortunate that people are probably going to sustain substantial property damage, but to compare this to the catastrophic, violent loss of human life in 9/11 is absurd.
I'm not so sure that it won't be like 9/11
Let's not bury the deal while they're still breathing, okay? This thread has been full of people who seem to be in advance mourning, and personally, I think the defeatism more offensive than those who have come in here with attempts at humor.
:goodposting: I couldn't possibly agree more.

I do not want to go near a debate of which catastrophe is worse, Katrina vs. 9/11, but I will say I have far, far less sympathy for the guy who lives on the coast in NO and had several days to prepare and an option to leave town but chose to stay and drown than I do for the guy busting his tail in a high rise on a normal workday when a 747 comes in through the office 10 floors down and he has to figure out whether he is better of jumping or baking.

Of course it would be a horrible, horrible tragedy if the roof of the Superdome were to collapse and kill thousands of people who did not have the means to leave, but to some posters here that kind of tragedy seems like it's almost a foregone conclusion.

I think several other people jumped on board to compare this to 9/11 above but, really, I only have it in me to respond to such hysteria once.
You do realize that -a) Not everyone has the capacity to just pick up and leave town on 24 hours notice; and

b) Many that could have left - fireman, police officers, doctors, nurses, EMTs - were forced to stay behind and weather the storm.

All told, there are still many tens of thousands in harm's way. You get that, right?

9:46 a.m.: Storm Surge Threat Lessens

The National Hurricane Center is downgrading its dire predictions for a massive storm surge. The center's director says New Orleans could see a 15-foot storm surge -- down from a feared 28-foot swell. That would still be enough to cause extensive flooding. The highest storm surge recorded so far was 22 feet in Bay St. Louis. -- Associated Press

QUIT YOUR WHINING. ALL OF YOU. NOW.

If I have to close/lock/delete this thread it will end poorly for MANY of you. If you really feel the need to argue over who doesn't have the right to be offended use the PM system.

I'm not taking sides. I think many of you are acting like idiots.

heard it's "only" 8 or 9 knobody knows if the SD could have withsttod a direct hit.

Nobody knew whether the SD would have been hit.

Therefore my point stand that nobody could be sure that this wouldn't be worse than 9/11.

To be calling it just a rainstorm is a stupid thing to post.

It looks like hurricane shick!, who is currently a category 1 hurricane, is on a crash course with this thread. The waters are pretty heated in here so it's likely he will pick up some steam and might become a cat 4 or 5 over the next few hours. Stay tuned for updates.

I was thinking the same thing. However, it sounds like the worst case scenario is going to pass. The entire city under 30 feet of water (arbitrary guess) doesn't sound like a possibility now.

The REALLY big problem for New Orleans was going to be the storm surge. Thankfully the storm landed just to the east of town, and it looks like the doomsday flooding scenario is not going to happen. That doesn't mean that there isn't going to be problems. Their is a levee break near the 9th Ward, and currently the storm is pushing the water of Lake Pontchatrain up against the levee on the north side of town. Hopefully those levees will hold up. I feel bad for Biloxi though, as they are probably going to see the worst of the storm surge.

True, which is very good with regards to people surviving. There will still be very significan home damage though.Good think that you're required to have flood insurance in new orleans.

Where will the Saints play? All road games?
I wondered the same thing. I bet they'd try to keep the games somewhat local if the SD needed repair. Play at Baton Rouge? Time will tell. We'll have to see how bad the damage and flooding is. I'm sure we'll know in a few days.

Haslett was on Mike and Mike this morning. He said that they were not making any plans until they knew how things were in the city. I missed most of his interview, but it didn;t seem to tell much info. LSU is being kicked around as the most likely place if they need a temporary home.

Just talked to my friend from Biloxi recently moved to Hawaii. Said his mom stayed in town to ride out the thing. Says she's on high enough ground, but I can see the freakin' water from her house not 200 yards away. I really don't agree with his assessment of the water situation, but oh well.

I wish I were at home watching this on TWC.
TWC is doing a horrible job of coverage in my opinion. Both Fox and CNN doing much better.Fox has this dude who weighs about 150 and is getting blown all over the place.

Now those of you that have SAints need to find out how they perform on natural grass vs Dome conditions.....

I've got a few Saints on my roster. Time to :ptts: .

I was viewing pictures on USAToday and it doesnt look so bad.French Quarter just looks wet. One picture of a buildings wall knocked out but for the most part... it looks okay (?)

Having been to Mississippi, in my estimation a hurricane could do well over $100,000 worth of improvements.:rimshot:

VERY nice

WDSU is reporting flood water on the second floor in the Beau Rivage in Biloxi, MS.
Is that the casino level? Or below? Due to Mississippi law, the actual casinos are moored in the water as they cannot be on land. I wonder if that causes a problem if the storm surge is 15-20 feet as they predicted. When you are in the casino you can see the seams in the floor where the casino "attaches" to the rest of the structure. Interesting.

I really have no idea. The only thing they reported was that it was "confirmed" that flood waters were on the 2nd floor and the storm surge was somewhere around the 20' mark right now.
