Trying to make one thread for us to follow that isn't a poll or have a title about my town being washed away.

Max Winds 175 mph

Gusts 215 mph

If Katrina were to hit land at this pressure, it would be the 2nd lowest pressure ever recorded in North America (according to the Weather Channel).

Any video of any weather guys trying to "get the inside scoop on how strong this storm is" yet?
It's not quite that bad yet. Weather Channel has had people on the beaches all day. While you can tell that winds & tides have picked up, no one is being blown away yet.

All the holdouts in mine and my wife's family have changed their minds, and are either here in B.R. with us right now, or are on their way.

Lots of people in New Orleans are proud of never running from hurricanes. Well, a lot of those people are here in Baton Rouge right now. Folks' "hurricane spidey senses" are tingling like at no time since 1969 (Camille).

Intersate heading west is completely jammed now. I-10 east is next to empty. The city is officially on complete freak out mode after this press conference.

Doubt you will see any of Jim Cantori during the middle of this one.
Are you sure? That would be good tv.
Yeah...enjoy watching my house/job/city get destroyed. hope you have a good day too. :hot:
Nothing against your house, job, and/or city but watching weather guys try to get the scoop is like watching a scary movie and yelling at the screen for the girl not to turn around.

this is f'n crazy can't imagine a big city being shut down for weeks
i seriously think weeks is a lowball estimate if it hits this hard. Seriously, this storm could make NO uninhabitable for months & possible leave it in such bad shape, nobody will move back.

Doubt you will see any of Jim Cantore during the middle of this one.
Someone from WC was in N.O. this morning ... don't know if that guy's still there or not.Tipsey -- glad you got to Pensacola.

thank you for your sensativity.

I was in New Orleans just a month ago, loved the city, already planning a return vacation. It'll be fine

I didn't know this Cantori guy before today, but I'm pretty sure that he's one of the WC on-the-scene people on the beaches in NO.

I feel for you Tips.....I'm in Florida and know what I went through last year....the anticipation and uncertainty is horrible....This one looks real bad though, all I can say is I honestly hope everything turns out OK for you....

First mandatory evacuation of Orleans Parish ever, right?...

For New Orleans to come through in any kind of decent shape, the storm has to make a tight curl east at the "last second." If the eye somehow comes in from the south over, say, Pass Christian, MS, that would be enough to relatively spare N.O.

Easiest drive here ever. Left after 11 last night, got here by 2. It was the least amount of traffic i've ever encountered on the drive (at least 50 times in my life...minimum). It was creepy.I figured most wouldn't evacuate towards the bullseye a.k.a. Pensacola. We will probably get some hurricane force winds here they are saying. But im safe here unless that thing comes towards Mobile. We will leave if it comes anywhere near here. Capella, you got any room?

Beaches in NO...lol. Maybe tuesday we'll have a big one formerly known as the West Bank. Cantori is the WC hurricane magnet. He had to apologize to folks here in Pcola when he showed up again for dennis. Nobody on this coast wants to see him show up. Im glad he is in biloxi.

 Sorry I meant coast -- there's one girl who is actually on a beach, but it's in AL.

No beaches in the New Orleans area -- it's all swamp from south of the metro area to the Gulf of Mexico.Jim Cantore is in Biloxi, MS, about 60-70 miles easy of New Orleans. The Mississippi Gulf Coast has an actual beach.

Hoping for the turn...but not wishing it on anyone else. Plain & Simple 10's of thousands of lives are at risk in NO.And yes, first mandatory ever. Nagin should have done it last night/ yesterday afternoon. Now the city will never have enough time to get the rest out. Some estimates on the radio last night while driving had the total evacuation at that point at less than 10% of the city.

Now i cannot get a phone line to Nawlins...All circuts busy.

(still not gonna smoke!....at least not anything with nicotine ;) in it today)

:bag: :bag: Look above for my :ptts:

just hearing from WDSU that the track seems to be shifting towards the east just a little bit. This could be great news for NO, but horrible for the MS. Still to early to tell exactly where.

If anybody is heading west, my doors are open. I doubt it, and it's a helluva long way, but I'll do anything to help.

I haven't been following the news at all this week. I had no idea how bad this could be. With N.O. being below sea level it just makes sense that the whole city is basically screwed. If you live in the area be safe and smart. :(

excellent, my friend & fellow FBG "Domepatrol" evacuated late last night after it upgraded to a 4. Good call buddy! I-10 west is a parking lot.

In laws just made it here to pensacola. They left @ 7 am & encountered no traffic going east. From the reports coming from WDSU, everything going west is in complete gridlock. Pensacola McStaggers now have 7 adults, 6 cats, and 2 dogs staying at my mothers. This could be uglier than the hurricane. :P

That's enough for a sit n go if you can teach the cats to hold cards.

I flew in to Fort Walton Beach, FL yesterday afternoon from Dallas. There were only 5 people on the plane! They told us they had over 50 cancellations.Destin is like a ghost town, very weird for this time of year. Looks like we lucked out this time and will just feel the outer effects of alot of rain and some wind.GL - to everybody within warning distance.

Does anybody know of any good New Orleans live cams that might be operational (for awhile anyway) during this storm?

last year during the ivan evac, he was on the radio talking about everything you might need on your trip... "take your important papers, jewlery, etc.... and don't forget to get some BENJAMINS"

I laughed for 10 minutes after he said that. Nagin is a cool cat...unlike this jerko running jefferson parish. he is on wdsu right now (link in first post) and is just such a doomsayer. Worse than me even!

I was talking this morning to a good friend of mine from NO. She is a civil engineer and helped design and construct the levy system. She hadnt heard about the increasing strength of the storm. When I told her she immediatly looked like she got punched in the stomach. She said the levies could only handle a slow Cat 3. She said she thought they would collapse before the eye even got there if it stayed this strong and on track. She said they could never get the funding to upgrade the system. :wall: Hope everyone stays safe.

I saw him in the background of the governor's press conference. She seemed almost frantic, but he looked like he was scoping the crowd for chicks. :lmao:

I think the funding is a few BILLION IIRC from CNN last night. I'm just glad my friend left - her and her family were going to stick it out - but I had a bad feeling from all the way up here in NJ.

Agreed, It is a lot of money but you are talking about saving an entire city and one of the most important ports in the country. What was the last highway funding bill? Around 290billion or so.

Now it's too late. Did the contra(or whatever) flow help much?

I have a question. My lady friend was going to her aunt's in Mississippi - but it's not that far north in MS (I forget the name of the place) but it's certainly not on the gulf - maybe 1-2 hours north of NO. Is that safe - or are they likely to have to keep moving north? (i havent heard from her since 5am my time so I dont know what their deal is at the moment)
