I'm in DeRidder. If anyone needs a place to stay, you can e-mail me @ tyelrrosefan@yahoo.com.Bring beer. No, really. The TRF clan has the room.

Does anybody know of any good New Orleans live cams that might be operational (for awhile anyway) during this storm?
Weather ChannelSeriously though, go to nola.com there are a few live cams there

Intersate heading west is completely jammed now.  I-10 east is next to empty.

The city is officially on complete freak out mode after this press conference.
GL tipsy.BTW, your mayor sounds ultra smooth.
last year during the ivan evac, he was on the radio talking about everything you might need on your trip... "take your important papers, jewlery, etc.... and don't forget to get some BENJAMINS"

I laughed for 10 minutes after he said that. Nagin is a cool cat...unlike this jerko running jefferson parish. he is on wdsu right now (link in first post) and is just such a doomsayer. Worse than me even!
Nagin is a great Mayor. He's one of the few people that realize that New Orleans needs long term solutions not quick band aids.

I was talking this morning to a good friend of mine from NO.  She is a civil engineer and helped design and construct the levy system.  She hadnt heard about the increasing strength of the storm.  When I told her she immediatly looked like she got punched in the stomach.  She said the levies could only handle a slow Cat 3.  She said she thought they would collapse before the eye even got there if it stayed this strong and on track.

She said they could never get the funding to upgrade the system.  :wall:

Hope everyone stays safe.
I think the funding is a few BILLION IIRC from CNN last night. I'm just glad my friend left - her and her family were going to stick it out - but I had a bad feeling from all the way up here in NJ.
Agreed, It is a lot of money but you are talking about saving an entire city and one of the most important ports in the country. What was the last highway funding bill? Around 290billion or so.
Now it's too late. Did the contra(or whatever) flow help much?
Contra Flow worked amazing for us. It opened at 4 and we got on the interstate at 4:15 and made it all the way through baton rouge with no problems at all.

Damn -- even the last of my holdout family has changed their minds and are coming to stay with us as of 10 a.m.People's "hurricane spidey senses" are really buzzing unlike any storm since 1969 (Camille). So many New Orleanians are proud of their records of never running from hurricanes ... and lots of those folks are up here in Baton Rouge.Praying for a power/water outage no longer than 96 hours or so ... that's what we've prepared for.

Is TF a forgotten soul in the FFA?
I'm not smart enough to remember where people live if I'm not reading a post by them. Obviously, I wish my GB TF nothing but the best. :banned:

Dauphin Island, barrier island in front of mobile county is already under 2 feet of water in some places because of the surge. 15 feet means the island will not be an island anymore. Highest point above sea level is 12 feet. Around 2,000 people living on the island, with one exit route.

GL and GB all you gulf FBGs. I heard that I-55 has been turned northbound only in LA and MS as well. Hoping that the storm will drop in intensity before making landfall as that seems like the best of all possible worlds for everyone. Stay frosty down there.

Also, regardless of your political affiliation, Drudge is usually a good place to go for storm updates as he keeps some important links at the top of his frontpage.

Chilling indeed, but my BS detector is going off big time. I have a hard time believe the National Weather Service would issue a statement with these kinds of absolute and panic-inducing statements. Link?

based on the age of most of the buildings in NO, this isn't far off imho.

Bobby Jindal, LA congressman, is being interviewed by Fox right now. He's talking about the potential weeks to months to pump the water out of New Orleans should the worst case happen. To have an elected official making a comment like that is pretty severe to me.

Not all FBG's are out of harm's way.........Still in town out in Kenner, helping my friend at his restaraunt to help feed state troopers, and emergency workers by the Armstrong airport. Got everybody that I cared about out yesterday afternoon and they are safe in Houston and Jackson.Pray for us all.

On CNN they were debating whether they would rebuild NO or move it to another location after the months it will take to remove the water.

It has been considered. I once read that the amount of energy in a large hurricane could power the entire earth (electricity, fuel, heat) for over a year. It makes you respect nature thats for sure.

I'll give you ten if you just go. I mean it. Only three Category 5s have ever hit the US (in recorded history.) My grandparents, from New England, still talk about the 1938 storm. It changed the entire geography of the region. New islands. Areas permanenly captured by the sea. This could be beyond anything experienced in modern times. Get the #### out. I mean it.
He's out/ in DEstin with family

Ain't gonna happen, I-10 is gridlocked going both ways, and I'm out by the Loyola exit. It's not as good as they're reporting. There are people that are freaking out because almost all of the gas stations are closed. I've finished boarding up my house and walking around the neighborhood securing trashcans and anything that can be carried by the wind. Just stacking stuff up in my house, getting my insurance docs, and headed over to the shop later on this evening.

Good news is at least we got the draft out of the way yesterday morning

Just noticed your avatar looks like the outer band animations they keep showing on the Weather Channel.

How long before a religious leader says that God sent the flood to wash away the sin of Sin City?In all seriousness, i'm from northern Louisiana and have many friends who have already evacuated from down there. I sincerely hope that the storm diverts its path in the next few hours because a direct hit would devastate the city, and likely ruin many of my friends homes. The effects on oil for the nation, money from the government and toll in human lives makes this an issue for all americans and not just those from southern La. and Miss.

Could you drive north, outpace the storm for a bit, then cut east/west? Seems wasteful and a pain in the ###, but whatever gets you the #### out of there. I'm seriously scared for you, as I'm sure others are. :X

Man, do you know how many offshore rigs are going to be wiped out?Get ready for $4 a gallon gas. God knows the environmental damage from all that oil, too.

Wow, that satellite graphic on the front page of Drudge reminds me of the satellite pictures (albeit fictional) on that crap movie Day After Tomorrow.

My wife and I are following this hurricane closely as New Orleans is one of our favorite places to visit. Were both hoping that it's not going to be as bad as some of the networks and news outlets are reporting.

There's too many good restaurants down there for it to get all washed away!

Good luck all, Tipsy, here's for hoping that those 175 MPH calms down a bit.

What probably going to happen is what happened during Betsy (or Camilie, before my time) On of the levees out by St Bernard/Lower 9th ward is going to "give way" and the storm surge is going to drain out that way, totally destroying the "parish".That is the only way that New Orleans will be saved given if we get the "worst case"Traffic is a lot better in the city now. Still going with my original gameplan and head to the resteraunt.

Traffic is a lot better now in the city, but we have some hotel rooms over by were we're feeding the Troopers.I look at it like this, if we get into trouble, the State troopers will know it first.

Might be a good idea to "commandeer" a boat from one of your neighbors.

184 MPH winds. Holy shnikeys!

How long before a religious leader says that God sent the flood to wash away the sin of Sin City?
I'm going to get flack for this, I'm sure, but I think it's a pretty big coincidence that God would send this so close on the heels of when we all realized Iraq was a lie and on the VERY DAY the Iraqis draft a Constitution.
You can't fish in 20' surges. Let's not hijack a legit & meaningful thread.

I can vouch for this. Last night I was watching the bocce in the North End of Boston and all the old-timers were talking about that storm. Called it the Long Island Express. I remember my grandfather showing me where his parent's cottage used to be in Wareham-he pointed about 1/4 mile out to sea and said there used to be a whole line of cottages but every one got swept away.Still, it sounds like Katrina could be much worse, as hard as it is to believe. Good luck and godspeed everyone.
