Katrina (1 Viewer)

Katrina is such a hot girl name. Shame it needed to be used on this storm.
I've been saying that for a few days. Storm is still on track for a direct hit on NO. They're saying if the city flood even the Superdome field is going to be under water - hope they are ready to move almost 100,000 people up into the stands, boxes, and suites.

Plus it opens up all kinds of good headline writing opportunites for this storm and teh ocean swells...Katrina and the Waves

New Orleans Not Walking on Sunshine in Katrina's Wake

etc.

Fox News had on professor from LSU saying the city could easily be in an ATLANTIS type state for 90 days...Holy ####.

It was a professor form LSU coupled with Fox news so proceed with caution.
I'd report from the AP but I know you don't recognize it as a news source.
Please get your information straight, and then proceed to post.TIA
Max winds down to 165 MPH...down from 175...

Having been born and raised in NO, I have a ton of folks over that way (some of which are here to shelter). I am praying for the best possible outcome for everyone on the coast. If it keeps going right now I am scared of what will happen in Pascagoula, which looks to be ground zero. The most chilling thing I have heard - and this is firsthand - is that 50,000 body bags have been ordered by the NO coroner.

Just now, an ABC Special Report on Katrina."If there was a 'Category 6' [on the scale], this storm would likely qualify."  GL all in the area.

Sweet jeebus - it keeps getting worse. I work downtown, am I'm guessing I won't be back at work this week. I love new orleans more than any city in the world, and I just hope to god everything is going to be ok.

Obviously, safety is a priority, but on the economic side we have virtually zero industry outside of tourism, so this will be very drastic for our city.
i said yesterday this might not be the city killer, doug b. agreed. However, this one will if we get a direct hit. If it can just take a little jog to the east and brush along plaqumines, we might be spared. If not, we have no city to go back to. :(

damn good luck bro

This looks horrible, MSNBC fox news is covering it pretty good. Honestly thought, if the superdome were to fail, god forbid, it could turn into the biggest national disaster ever. :X There really seems like no way around NO getting smashed.

DONT DO IT. JACKSON WILL EXPERIENCE HURRICANCE FORCE WINDS FOR SURE. I am positive your flight will be cancelled soon.

Well guys, I'm in Baton Rouge with my parents and my wife. We live in Slidell in apartments that are right near Lake Pontchatrain. :wall:My job, which I just started after the bar exam, is on Poydras St. in New Orleans in a high rise building. Looking like I may not be working for weeks. Got to be strong for the wife and my mom, but it's tough. Wish us luck.

 Sound advice.

When is it estimated to reach land?
its starting to send feeder bands across the whole coast & area. Pensacola Bay is up at least 2-4 ft, and we are 200 miles east.
Tipsy - you're in Pensecola, right? Have you and your family considered heading farther east and/or north. It seems like one little jog and this thing could right over Mobile and/or Pensecola.

Seems unlikely now. New Orleans/Pass Christian/Gulfport are firmly in the crosshairs.

The most chilling thing I have heard - and this is firsthand - is that 50,000 body bags have been ordered by the NO coroner.
I imagine most are for graveyard corpses. When graveyards flood, the cakets tend to pop up. Ghoulish scenario that we will probably see a lot of.

Car is still packed, but my moms house is light years safer than getting on the road right now. her husband is an enginereer/architect. He has poured concrete anchors with chains holding all four corners of this roof on. And it aint gonna jog anymore. New Orleans/Slidell are right in the path. :(

Yep. The path is not going to change much. I'm pretty much expecting that my wife and I will have nothing left other than the clothes on our back, seeing as our apartment is right on the lake in Slidell.

They dont bury the dead in NO - they are all above ground IIRC - the whole below sea level thing.

Ministry has passed along new of a decrease in wind speed. With luck, this could be the result of the northern hurricane bands going over the swampland south and southeast of the city. Open water sustains these storms. I am really hoping the sustained winds drop down into the 130s before the interior of the storm hits land.

biggest urban myth of this coveage. it started because of some crazy old guy reporter in the city my F.I.L. knows. Its been rehashed all day...even heard it was from the mayors mouth...all complete garbage.walter maestri was the guy...he is the head of Jefferson parish emergency....FIL confirmed.

Last chance is for a slight turn due north, toward a Pearl River-to-Pass Christian landfall. New Orleans would still get hammered, but it would be a significant reprieve.

Yea but the heat turns most of the bodies in to ashes

yes, the bodies will float. the body bag story started with this guy from jefferson parish that is notoriously dramatic. FIL has a political talk show every Fri night & won't let him on.
