Having been to Mississippi, in my estimation a hurricane could do well over $100,000 worth of improvements.

I'm guessing there's a difference in joking about the area vs joking about people dying. Then again, I'm not the one that defines the line, but that's where I'd put it.
I didn't post it, nor do I consider it right...however, the guy did see why it was wrong, felt bad for doing it, and removed it himself. He even posted several comments later that were topic related and in good spirits

This thread is a minefield. You've gotta have sack tact to post in here.
Fixed. This storm has killed people and several of us have quite a stake in the outcome of the storm, be it homes, businesses or loved ones.

This post offends me, highly.
I understand, and I'm willing to suspend his account for as long as you want. However, I will also suspend your account for an equal length of time. Deal?

The old "pound of flesh" routine. I like it.

Many people die everyday from all kinds of events, both natural and man-made, and yet we post with humor in the face of such events all the time.Granted this current event sucks and I feel bad for people forced to struggle, regardless of the conditions that cause it. But don't take the high road and claim the need for "tact" simply because the event strikes a bit closer to home; that to me seems tactless, if we insist on using the word.

As for financial worries, we all take our chances. Building a home on flood plain, not to mention a city, carries great risk. To ignore this fact simply because we believe people have rights to particular material goods placed wherever they see fit, is to ignore that building in high risk areas means losing everything. We don't cry much when some one bets the farm and loses in Vegas do we?

Again, I feel for everyone effected by this storm, especially the poorer people. None of which are represented here by the way.

That's it, off the :soap:

Aw man, just delete my post...I'd hate to have to start over with my "Elder Beerman" alias.

I was going to make a point about how with the varied geography of the posters on a board, you're apt to be laughing in the face of someone actively enduring misery -- but instead how about let's stop arguing in this thread.Seriously, we're all on the same page here. We are concerned that there's a hurricane. So let's stop comparing it other tragedies, baiting each other and getting into petty squabbles.
Do you remember where you are?

Anyone local getting any radio reports? I've evacuated to Alabama and was trying to see how Uptown fared.Neil, if you see this post call me when you can.

The first thing I heard on TV when I got up this morning was that many houses were already flooded up to their ceilings.I was relieved to hear, after reading this thread, that the storm was downgraded a bit. I have relatives in Louisiana but I'm not sure where they are in relation to the hurricane. It was a sad bit of news last night when they reported 3 people dying just trying to get out of the city. I hope there are no more.Tipsy, my thoughts are with you and your family. I hope you and anyone else here that live there, stays safe and with minimal damage to your homes if at all. Here's to hoping it dies down quickly!

Where will the Saints play? All road games?
I wondered the same thing. I bet they'd try to keep the games somewhat local if the SD needed repair. Play at Baton Rouge? Time will tell. We'll have to see how bad the damage and flooding is. I'm sure we'll know in a few days.
Haslett was on Mike and Mike this morning. He said that they were not making any plans until they knew how things were in the city. I missed most of his interview, but it didn;t seem to tell much info. LSU is being kicked around as the most likely place if they need a temporary home.
And given their home record for the past (many) years a few more away games may be a good thing (lifetime Saints fan here).Luckily the doomsday scenario has not played out and the levees seem to be holding for now. If it ends up just being a really bad flood and storm, NO folks are more prepared to handle that than anyone I can think of. Now really worried about Gulfport. Pretty little town that may not be so nice come tomorrow.

Anybody from New Orleans have any reports from anybody?

I live on the West Bank in Marrero. Just wondering how things went over there. We talked to somebody in Harvey and things seemed to go OK. Some broken glass, a couple of roof problems, but not like a bomb went off or anything. This is in Stonebridge.

Anybody else have any reports?
I have heard that the west bank (Gretna, Harvey, etc.) is not flooded. Don't know if that means just a couple feet or nothing. Just not 10 feet.I have heard some bad things about Chalmette area, though.

Can Louisiana use the federal funds that were earmarked for Disaster Relief to improve their Levee and Water Pump systems? They got lucky this time, but the next one might be right on top of them.

Thanks for the update. Most of my LA relatives are on the West Bank, but they hightailed it out of there (impromptu family vacation to Dallas) a couple of days ago.

I graciously spared you all the worst case scenario. Been dropping hints here and there that I would do just that. You're welcome.

Seriously, even though when it's all said and done this will still be bad, it's still quite a relief that it looks like it won't be nearly as bad as thought. I can't feel happy exactly considering it's still a disaster but it's close. I think the people here that left thinking they'd never se etheir homes agains will be going back to them in another few days to a week. :)

Just saw this from the poor guy FOX has stuck out in the middle of this thing. As soon as the camera went on him, it showed him running and saying "Whoa! I'm getting out of here. A big piece of roof just landed 3 feet from me.":lmao: Geez, FOX. Give the little guy a break. Your gonna kill him.

Is that the guy that had to sign a release to stay at the hotel?

WDSU is reporting some home flooding in the Stonebridge area of Harvey, but the worst of it is on the East bank.

New Orleans has the best pump system in the country. The problem is that there is no pump system known to man that can pump out that much water.

Oh my god, hurricane katrina rips 2 holes in superdome. :X
Calm down.
8:46 a.m.: Superdome Damage Considered Minor

The National Guard told reporters at a news conference in Baton Rouge, La., that the holes in the roof at the Superdome are only minor. A representative of the National Guard blamed the strong winds for ripping the fabric, but he said there were no structural problems with the roof, and evacuees in the affected areas were moved. -- WDSU.com Web Staff

My dad's friend is a doctor at EJ in Metairie and he just sent a text message saying there is brown water coming out of the pipes

I had a pretty good pump system, but they confiscated it from my carry-on at the airport.

St. Bernard Parish is flooded with 8 feet of water.

This is via an IM from my buddy who happens to be in Greece:
cnn internaional had a guy in metairie- a fema inspector- says pumps are working and water is close to his house but not yet flooded. he thinks levee will hold
Haven't heard anything about uptown, but this is encouraging

Its structually sound, but it doesn't look pretty.

They've already spent millions to do this. I think to do it right would cost around $1billion IIRC

Devastation in Biloxi, Miss., is going to be extreme. Storm jogged to the east and spared New Orleans a direct hit, so the Miss. coast and into Mobile are paying the price.Just because it didn't happen to New Orleans, doesn't mean it's not happening somewhere.

The guy that had to sign a release is in Louisiana, and the short guy is in Alabama I think. The guy that had to sign the release said they were the only ones there as I think the hotel staff said see ya, we're outta here.

Very true, but the loss of life in a worst case NO hit is well above a hit anywhere else in the nothern hemisphere.Like I said, though, Gulfport is a nice little town (as is Biloxi). One can only hope for the best.

I’m sailing away, set an open course for the virgin seaI’ve got to be free, free to face the life that’s ahead of meOn board, I’m the captain, so climb aboardWe’ll search for tomorrow on every shoreAnd I’ll try, oh lord, I’ll try to carry on

Has anyohe heard anything about the Northshore, Lacombe especially? Thanks for the update. If I hear anything, I'll post on this thread.

I remember my buddy (the guy in Hawaii via Biloxi) saying to me during Opal in 95 or whatever that we were still in danger at Univ of South Alabama in Mobile (way inshore) because Camile pushed boats as far inland as the I-10 area. Said, "If I walk outside the bar during the hurricane and get hit by a Bayliner, it was just my time to go."Sounds like a good thing I'm not in Biloxi right now.Probably get another check with him after lunch to see how his mom is doing. Can't believe they didn't evacuate. I mean, it's not like they're trailer park people. His mom is a millionaire many times over and a very smart woman. Can't understand why she wouldn't get the #### out of town, especially considering she lives right across the street from the back bay.

I remember as this storm was coming in and all the doomsday scenarios were being bantered about that the general thinking is that for a storm to really destroy New Orleans, it would have to come on a more western track along the Alabama/Mississippi coasts and directly up the Mississippi. Of course I didn't want to post this before the storm came in because of the jinx factor, but the theory is sort of being proven true today... that the outer islands and the land south of New Orleans is a great buffer for a storm coming from due south. Also, I've posted elsewhere that these storms always turn right (make landfall further east on the Gulf Coast than experts predict). It happened once again and I just don't see why they don't plan for the wobble because I haven't seen one yet that "wobbled" west.

Thanks for the info. I saw on nola.com that Napoleon Ave. had extensive wind damage, but I'm not sure what that means. My house is two blocks away on Constance St. It sure would be nice to know if I have a roof.
